Payment Routing and Backup Processors for Skincare Brands
Why beauty stores get funds held or payments cut off, how routing and a backup processor protect sales and renewals, and how to set it up.
Article summary
TL;DR
Skincare isn't banned by mainstream processors, yet beauty stores report held funds and sudden cutoffs when products are read as making health claims. Payment routing sends each payment to the right processor, and a backup processor takes over when the first one declines, pauses or holds your account. Set it up before you need it: a cutoff can come with a day's notice.
- Shopify Payments treats as "pseudo pharmaceuticals" "products that make health claims that are not verified by a local or national regulatory body".
- Beauty Independent reported a beauty marketplace cut off from Shopify Payments with immediate effect and closed for over a week while it found a new processor.
- A beauty merchant reports Shopify reserving "20% of our funds for 120 days".
- Shopify allows one card processor at a time; a backup needs a checkout or payment layer that supports several.
- Cascade only soft declines: Visa limits reattempts to 15 in 30 days and forbids retrying some codes.

Why beauty stores get held or cut off
| Trigger | What happens | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Products read as making health claims | Classified as "pseudo pharmaceuticals" by Shopify Payments | Shopify1Shopify Help Center, Shopify Payments eligibility, read October 12, 2026 |
| Actives and peels in the catalog | Merchants report vitamin C serums and peels questioned; a marketplace cut off | Beauty Independent2Beauty Independent, Beauty e-commerce websites dropped from Shopify Payments processing service, read via search October 26, 2026 |
| Risk signals on a regular beauty store | A 20% reserve held 120 days | Merchant report3Shopify Community, merchant thread on a reserve held on a beauty store, July 17, 2024 |
| Trials with unclear pricing | ProhibitedBy Stripe | Stripe4Stripe, Prohibited and restricted businesses, read October 12, 2026 |
Keeping claims cosmetic lowers the risk; it doesn't remove it. That is why the backup matters. Claims in detail: cosmetic or drug claims.
What routing does
| Routing | How | For a skincare brand |
|---|---|---|
| Cascade | Retry a soft or processor-side decline on processor B | Recover sales lost to temporary declines |
| Failover | Send payments to B when A is down, paused or holding funds | Keep selling during a review |
| Rules | Pick the processor by country, currency or card type | Use each where it performs best |
| Renewal routing | Charge renewals where the saved card can be charged | Keep routine subscriptions running |

Renewals and saved cards
- Saved cards are tokens held by the processor that stored them.
- Plan how renewals keep running if that processor pauses: failed payment recovery for skincare brands.
- Changing processor without losing subscribers: switching payment processor for skincare brands.
What routing is not
Not a way to spread disputes
Routing is not a way to spread disputes to stay under network thresholds; Visa's VAMP threshold for US merchants is 1.5% since April 1, 20269Visa, Acquirer Monitoring Program (VAMP) fact sheet, 2025 v2.
Not a way to hide what you sell
Every processor must review your actual business and claims.
Not a substitute
Routing is not a substitute for clear claims, clear trial terms and low disputes.
Setup checklist
- A second processor that has reviewed your products, claims and offers.
- A checkout that can route between them (not Shopify's own checkout, which takes one card processor5Shopify Help Center, Configuring third-party payment providers, read October 26, 2026).
- Rules: cascade soft declines, failover on outages or holds.
- Live traffic on the backup every day, so it stays tested.
- Same brand descriptor on both.
- Monthly review of declines and holds by processor.
Set it up before you need it: a cutoff can come with a day's notice.
