How to Increase AOV for a Skincare Brand
Raise a skincare brand's order value without cheapening it: routine kits, gifts with purchase, upsells, sizes and refills, with the margin math.
Article summary
TL;DR
Skincare brands raise order value best by selling the routine, not the product: a cleanser, serum and moisturizer chosen for one skin concern, a gift with purchase above a threshold, a one-click upsell after checkout, and larger sizes or refills. These lift the basket without the blanket discounts that make a premium brand look cheap.
- The median order for Shopify beauty brands is $66 (Polar Analytics, August 2026).
- Post-purchase upsells average 4.7% acceptance, 28.3% for the top-performing offers (ReConvert, 2023 data); optimized stores reach 16.2% (Zipify, July 2026).
- A "free" gift that needs a purchase must state its conditions up front, under FTC rules.
- Recommend by skin type: a rich cream suggested to an oily-skin buyer breaks trust, as one beauty AOV guide warns.
- Stripe prohibits "high-pressure upselling". Keep add-ons optional and clearly priced.

6 levers that don't cheapen the brand
| Lever | How it works | Effect on AOV | Brand risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Routine kit by concern | 2 to 4 steps chosen for one need | High | Low, it reads as expertise |
| Gift with purchase | A mini or travel size above a threshold | Medium | Low, if the gift is valued |
| Order bump | A small, related add-on at checkout | Low to medium | Low |
| One-click upsell | A complementary step or a bigger size after payment | Medium | Low if relevant, high if pushy |
| Sizes and refills | Full size, value size, refill pouch | Medium | Low, and signals sustainability |
| Free shipping threshold | Set above the current median order | Low to medium | None |

- After paymentOne-click upsell: the next step or a bigger size
Each step of the purchase has its own lever.
The lever to use sparingly: sitewide percentage discounts. They raise order counts for a weekend and train customers to wait.
Routine kits by concern
A shopper rarely needs only a moisturizer: they need a routine for a concern. Build kits around concerns, not around what sells together.
| Concern | Example kit | Steps |
|---|---|---|
| Dry skin | Gentle cleanser, hydrating serum, rich moisturizer | 3 |
| Oily or combination skin | Gel cleanser, light serum, oil-free moisturizer | 3 |
| Sensitive skin | Fragrance-free cleanser and moisturizer | 2 |
| Morning routine | Cleanser, moisturizer, sunscreen | 3 |
Name kits by the concern
"Dry skin routine", not a discount such as "3 for 2".
Keep claims cosmetic
"Hydrates", "smooths the look of", not "treats" or "repairs".

Gift with purchase
A gift above a threshold raises the basket and introduces a product the customer hasn't tried.
- Set the threshold above the median order, for example above $66 if you are near the median1Polar Analytics, Weekly ecommerce benchmarks, Beauty & Personal Care, updated August 25, 2026.
- Pick a gift that leads to a sale: a mini of your best-selling serum, not a pouch.
- State the conditions up front: under the FTC's rule on bargain offers, an item is not "free" if its conditions are hidden or the regular price of what must be bought was raised416 CFR 233.4, Bargain offers based upon the purchase of other merchandise.
- Show the gift in the cart with a progress bar: "Add $12 to get the mini serum."

Relevance is what moves a store up the scale.
What works for skincare:
- The next step of the routine: serum after a cleanser, sunscreen after a moisturizer.
- A bigger size of what they just bought, if they chose the small one.
- One offer, clearly priced, then the confirmation page. Stripe prohibits high-pressure upselling6Stripe, Prohibited and restricted businesses, read October 12, 2026.
Setup: one-click upsells for skincare brands and order bumps.
Sizes and refills
- A value size at a better price per ml raises AOV and lasts longer.
- Refill pouches for jars and bottles cost less to ship and give a reason to reorder from you.
- Show price per ml so the value is clear without a discount badge.
Free shipping threshold
- Take your median order after discounts.
- Set the threshold 10 to 30% above it.
- Suggest the product that fills the gap: a mini, a lip balm, a refill.
Set above the current median order.
Check the margin
Illustrative figures. A serum sells for $48 and costs $9 to make; a cleanser sells for $28 and costs $5. Shipping costs you $7.
| Offer | Revenue | Product cost | Shipping | Contribution |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Serum alone | $48 | $9 | $7 | $32 |
| Serum + cleanser kit, 10% off | $68.40 | $14 | $7 | $47.40 |
| Serum + gift mini (cost $3) above $60 threshold, buyer adds cleanser | $76 | $17 | $7 | $52 |
| Serum alone, 25% sitewide discount | $36 | $9 | $7 | $20 |
The kit and the gift each earn more than the serum alone. The sitewide discount earns less on every order.
