Shopify Checkout for Skincare Brands

What a skincare brand can and can't do in Shopify checkout in 2026: one card processor, routine upsells, refill subscriptions, tracking after scripts.

Article summary

TL;DR

Shopify's checkout is fast and trusted, and most skincare brands can sell through it. Its limits: one card processor at a time, a 0.2% to 2% fee if that processor isn't Shopify Payments, and customizations only through Shopify's extensions since the old scripts were retired. Keep it if Shopify Payments accepts you and your offers are simple; add a checkout layer if you need a backup processor or deeper routine funnels.

  • Shopify allows one credit card processor at a time; a third-party processor costs 2% (Basic) down to 0.2% (Plus) per order.
  • Shopify Payments treats "products that make health claims that are not verified by a local or national regulatory body" as pseudo pharmaceuticals.
  • Beauty Independent reported a beauty marketplace cut off from Shopify Payments with immediate effect.
  • Script tags on Thank you and Order status pages stopped on August 28, 2025 (Plus) and August 26, 2026 (other plans).
  • Shopify Subscriptions supports a limited list of gateways.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sell skincare with Shopify checkout?

Yes. Most cosmetic skincare sells through Shopify Payments, as long as products aren't read as making unverified health claims. Otherwise, connect one third-party card processor, with a 0.2% to 2% fee per order.

Can I use two payment processors in Shopify checkout?

Not for cards: Shopify allows one credit card processor at a time. For a card backup or routing, you need a checkout or payment layer outside Shopify's own.

What happened to Shopify checkout scripts?

Additional scripts and script tags on the Thank you and Order status pages stopped on August 28, 2025 for Plus and August 26, 2026 for other plans. Use checkout UI extensions, Shopify Functions and web pixels.

Does Shopify Subscriptions work with any processor?

No: Shopify Payments, PayPal Express, Authorize.net, Adyen and Stripe, the last for select merchants only. Check yours before planning refill subscriptions.
