Email Flows for Supplement Brands

The 8 email flows a supplement brand needs, replenishment timed to the supply, the subscription emails the rules require, and what to write.

Article summary

TL;DR

A supplement brand needs eight automated email flows: welcome, abandoned checkout, post-purchase onboarding, replenishment timed to the supply, subscription notices, failed payment, review request and win-back. The replenishment flow usually earns the most, because a bottle runs out on a schedule. Some subscription emails are not optional: card networks and state laws require them.

  • Flows get 5.58% click rates against 1.69% for campaigns, and about 13 times the placed order rate (Klaviyo, 183,000+ customers, 2026).
  • For a 30-day supply, Klaviyo's example sends the first reorder email on day 25 and a second 3 days later.
  • 37.67% of supplement customers reorder within about 3 months of their first order (Decile, Q1 2024 cohort).
  • Visa requires a reminder at least 7 days before a trial ends; Mastercard requires a confirmation with cancellation instructions after sign-up.
  • Marketing emails need a physical address and an opt-out honored within 10 business days (CAN-SPAM).

Replenishment timed to the supply

Reorders come early: 37.67% of supplement customers reorder within about 3 months of their first order, in Decile's Q1 2024 cohort.8Commerce Catalyst, Supplement benchmarks, citing Decile, Q1 2024 cohort (June 2024)

What each email does

  1. Day 25: first reminder, before the supply runs out.
  2. Day 28: second reminder, 3 days later.
  3. After day 35: one follow-up, with an incentive.
  4. Reorder: one click to the same product, a second button to subscribe.

  2. KlaviyoDay 28Second reminderYour supply is almost gone.
  3. KlaviyoDay 35+Follow-up after the cycleCome back with an incentive.
  4. Your storeDay 35+Order placedSame product, one click.

Two reminders before the bottle is empty, one after.

Illustrative example. Timing from Klaviyo's replenishment flow example.
  • Exclude subscribers from replenishment emails: they already receive the product.
  • One click to reorder the same product, and a second button to subscribe.
  • Send by product, not by order: a customer with two products gets two clocks.

Frequently asked questions

What email flows should a supplement brand have?

Welcome, abandoned checkout, post-purchase onboarding, replenishment, subscription notices, failed payment, review request and win-back. Start with abandoned checkout and replenishment: they recover or create orders right away.

When should a supplement replenishment email go out?

A few days before the supply runs out. For a 30-day product, Klaviyo's example sends the first email on day 25 and the second 3 days later, then one follow-up after the cycle. Exclude subscribers, who already receive the product.

Do I have to send emails before a subscription renews?

For trials, Visa requires a reminder at least 7 days before the trial ends. Mastercard expects a confirmation with cancellation instructions after sign-up and a notice before billing for cycles of 6 months or less. California requires an annual reminder for contracts since July 2025.

Can supplement emails make health claims?

The same rules as your labels and website apply. Structure/function claims need the FDA statement, and disease claims make the product a drug. Keep promises realistic and testimonials typical.
