Abandoned Cart Recovery for Supplement Brands
Why supplement shoppers abandon, the email and SMS sequence that recovers them, what each message should say, when to discount, and 2026 benchmarks.
Article summary
TL;DR
About 70% of online carts are abandoned. A supplement brand recovers part of them with a short sequence: an email or text within the first hour, a second message the next day that answers the main doubt (cost, trust or the card being declined), and a last one at 48 hours. Discount only in the last message, if at all, and only for shoppers who haven't bought before.
- The average documented cart abandonment rate is 70.22% (Baymard, 50 studies, September 2025).
- Abandoned cart emails earn $6.77 revenue per recipient on average, $13.70 for the top 10% (Klaviyo, 110,000+ customers, October 2026).
- Abandoned cart texts get a 10.3% click rate on average, against 6.0% for emails.
- 40% of abandoners cite extra costs, 19% don't trust the site with their card, 10% had their card declined.
- Texts need prior written consent for marketing; emails need an opt-out and a postal address.

Extra costs come first, by far.
The recovery sequence
| Step | Channel | Timing | Content |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Email (and SMS if opted in) | 30 to 60 minutes | "You left this": product, total, one link back to checkout |
| 2 | About 24 hours | Answer the main doubt: reviews, testing, guarantee, delivery date | |
| 3 | Email or SMS | About 48 hours | Last reminder; a small incentive only for first-time buyers, if you use one |

- Exclude buyers who just bought the same product another way.
What each message says
| Shopper's doubt | Message focus | Example line |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Total, shipping, price per month | "3 months for $34 a month, free shipping" |
| Trust | Reviews, third-party testing, guarantee | "Tested by an independent lab. 60-day guarantee." |
| Does it work? | How to take it, realistic timeline | "Most customers take it daily for 4 to 6 weeks" (only if you can back it up) |
| Payment problem | Other payment options | "Pay with Apple Pay or Google Pay in one tap" |

What each message does
- First hour: a reminder and one link back to the prefilled checkout.
- Next day: answers trust and payment doubts.
- 48 hours: answers cost, the top reason.
- Order placed: the sequence stops.

Discounts: when, not always
A discount in every first reminder teaches shoppers to abandon on purpose.
- No discount in message 1 or 2. Many shoppers were only interrupted; a reminder is enough to bring them back.
- A small incentive in message 3, for first-time buyers only, if your margin allows it.
- Prefer free shipping or a free sample to a percentage off: it answers the top reason (extra costs1Baymard Institute, Cart abandonment rate statistics and reasons for abandonment, updated September 22, 2025) and costs less.
- Never discount subscribers or returning customers in cart recovery.
Message 1 and 2
No discount. A reminder is enough for shoppers who were interrupted.
Message 3
A small incentive, first-time buyers only, if the margin allows it.
Free shipping first
It answers extra costs, the top reason, and costs less than a percentage off.
Never
No cart-recovery discount for subscribers or returning customers.
Capture and consent
You can only recover a cart if you know who left it.
- Ask for the email first in the checkout, so an abandoned checkout has a contact.
- SMS consent separate and optional, never pre-checked; marketing texts need prior express written consent347 CFR 64.1200, Delivery restrictions, sections (a)(2) and (f)(9).
- Marketing emails need an opt-out and a physical postal address4FTC, CAN-SPAM Act: A compliance guide for business, read October 26, 2026.
- Server-side tracking so recovered orders are counted once: server-side tracking for supplement brands.
