Reducing Payment Declines for Supplement Brands

Why supplement orders get declined at checkout, the difference between issuer declines and blocks, fixes that raise approvals, and Visa's retry limits.

Article summary

TL;DR

A payment fails for one of three reasons: the card issuer declines it, your processor's fraud tool blocks it, or your integration sends something invalid. For supplement brands, issuers decline more often on unusual amounts, unrecognized descriptors and risky signals. Fix the data you send, add wallets and 3D Secure on soft declines, retry only within Visa's limits, and route to a second processor when the first declines.

  • Stripe names three failure types: issuer declines, blocked payments and invalid API calls.
  • Issuers decide on "spending habits, account balance, and card data (expiration date, address information, and CVC)".
  • 10% of US shoppers who abandoned a checkout cite a declined card (Baymard).
  • Visa allows up to 15 reattempts in 30 days and forbids retrying some codes, as reported by Payway.
  • Failed payments cause 25% of lost subscriptions (Stripe).

Stripe's response for a high-risk block reads "Stripe blocked this charge as too risky", with advice "do_not_try_again"1Stripe Docs, Declines, read October 26, 2026. Retrying it changes nothing.

Why issuers decline supplement orders

Declines cost twice: 10% of US shoppers who abandoned a checkout cite a declined card2Baymard Institute, Cart abandonment rate statistics and reasons for abandonment, updated September 22, 2025, and failed payments cause 25% of lost subscriptions5Stripe, data on failed payments and lost subscriptions, January 23, 2024.

Visa reattempts allowed in 30 days, as reported by Payway

  • Unusual amounts: a large first order or a bundle well above the cardholder's habits.
  • Unrecognized merchant: a descriptor that doesn't match your brand.
  • Card data mismatches: expiry, address or CVC errors1Stripe Docs, Declines, read October 26, 2026.
  • Risk signals: new device, foreign IP, many attempts.
  • Insufficient funds: common on renewals and big bundles.

Fixes at checkout

  1. Collect clean data: address autocomplete, CVC required, clear error messages.
  2. Offer wallets: Apple Pay and Google Pay pass tokenized card data; Shopify and BCG linked accelerated checkouts to higher conversion6Shopify, with BCG, on accelerated checkouts, June 29, 2023.
  3. Use 3D Secure on soft declines that request it: Stripe retries with authentication when the issuer asks4Stripe Docs, Authenticate with 3D Secure, read October 26, 2026.
  4. A clear descriptor: your brand name, so issuers' fraud models and customers recognize you.
  5. Tune fraud rules: a strict rule blocks good customers before the issuer even sees them1Stripe Docs, Declines, read October 26, 2026.
  6. A second processor: route a processor-side decline to a backup: payment routing.

  1. Soft decline

Insufficient funds or an authentication request: retry within Visa's limits, or with 3D Secure when the issuer asks.

  2. Hard decline

Closed account, lost or stolen card: category 1 codes are never retried.

  3. Blocked payment

Marked "do_not_try_again": retrying it changes nothing.

Tagada follows Visa and Mastercard rules and the laws that apply to payments.

Frequently asked questions

Why are my customers' payments being declined?

The issuer declined, your processor's fraud tool blocked the payment, or the integration sent invalid data. Check the decline or block reason on each failed payment before acting.

What's the difference between a soft and a hard decline?

A soft decline is temporary, such as insufficient funds or an authentication request, and can be retried within limits. A hard decline, such as a closed account or lost card, must not be retried; Visa forbids retrying category 1 codes.

Do supplement stores get more declines?

They see more risk signals: large bundles, new customers from ads, subscriptions on cards that change. Clean card data, wallets, a recognizable descriptor and 3DS on soft declines help.

Should I retry a declined payment?

Only if the code allows it, and within Visa's 15 reattempts in 30 days. Never retry a blocked payment marked "do not try again" or a hard decline.
