Failed Payment Recovery for Supplement Brands

Why supplement renewals fail, the recovery playbook (retries, card updates, messages, backup processor) and the card network retry rules.

Article summary

TL;DR

Failed renewals are subscribers you lose without them deciding to leave. Recover them in layers: refresh cards before they expire, retry soft declines at smart times within the first 10 days, message the customer with a one-click card update, and route the renewal to a backup processor. Never retry the declines that card networks forbid you to retry.

  • Involuntary churn makes up an estimated 20 to 40% of total churn in subscription businesses (Recurly, April 2026).
  • 90% of recovered payments are recovered within the first 10 days after the failure.
  • Visa limits reattempts to 15 in 30 days and forbids retrying some decline codes, with a fee for each excess attempt.
  • Once a customer is lost to a payment issue, only about 5% ever resubscribe, as reported by the Merchant Risk Council.
  • For supplements, the window is short: the bottle runs out, and the customer buys elsewhere.

Why renewals fail

Involuntary churn makes up an estimated 20 to 40% of total churn in subscription businesses, and 90% of recovered payments come back within the first 10 days after the failure.1Recurly, Failed payment recovery: a data-based strategy, April 30, 2026 Once a customer is lost to a payment issue, only about 5% ever resubscribe, as reported by the Merchant Risk Council.3Merchant Risk Council, Tackling the silent revenue killer, 2025

  1. Soft decline

Insufficient funds or issuer unavailable. Retry within network limits, later in the day or after payday.

  2. Expired or replaced card

Not with the old card. Card updater and a card update link.

  3. Hard decline

Closed account, lost or stolen card. Never retry: ask for a new payment method.

  4. Processor problem

Outage or account review. Route to a backup processor.

The recovery playbook

WhenAction
Before the renewalRun card updates; email customers whose card expires before the next charge
Day 0, the failureRead the decline code; never retry hard declines; send a friendly "update your card" message with a one-click link
Days 1 to 10Retry soft declines at different times and days; one reminder by email and one by SMS
If the processor declinesRoute the retry to a backup processor
Day 10 onwardLast reminder; pause the subscription instead of cancelling it
After recoveryShip quickly; the customer may be close to the end of their supply

Example

A 30-day supplement renewal fails on day 28 of the supply. Recovering it on day 3 still gets the bottle there before the customer runs out. Recovering it on day 15 means two weeks without the product, and many won't come back.

Watch out

Retrying a hard decline again and again does not recover the payment; it adds fees and can flag your account. Retry only what the decline code allows.

Messages that recover

  • Tone: helpful, not threatening. "Your next bottle is on hold: update your card in one click."
  • One-click link to update the card, without logging in if possible.
  • Remind them what they'll miss: the next delivery date and the product.
  • Email plus SMS: SMS gets read fast, which matters when the bottle is running out.
  • Stop when it's fixed: no reminder after the payment goes through.

A backup processor recovers what retries can't

Some failures come from your side: a processor outage, an account review, or a processor that declines more for your category. Retrying on the same processor won't help.

  • Route the renewal to a second processor when the first declines with a processor-side reason.
  • Keep cards usable on both processors, so the renewal can run on either.
  • Check the decline rate by processor each month.

Frequently asked questions

What is dunning for subscriptions?

Dunning is the process of recovering failed subscription payments: retrying the charge, updating the card, messaging the customer and, if needed, pausing the subscription. For supplement brands it protects renewals that customers never meant to cancel.

How many times can I retry a failed payment?

Visa allows up to 15 reattempts in 30 days for retryable declines and forbids retrying category 1 codes, such as closed accounts or lost cards, with a fee for each excess attempt. In practice, a few well-timed retries within the first 10 days recover most payments.

How much of subscription churn is from failed payments?

Recurly estimates that involuntary churn accounts for 20 to 40% of total churn across subscription businesses. Split your own churn into voluntary and involuntary to see how much you can recover.

When should I stop retrying a failed renewal?

When the decline code says not to retry, when you reach the network limits, or after about 10 days without success, since 90% of recoveries happen within that window. Pause the subscription rather than cancelling it, and keep the card update link active.
