Subscription Billing for Supplement Brands
What a supplement subscription system must do: cycles that match the supply, skip and swap, retries, card portability and the renewal rules.
Article summary
TL;DR
A supplement subscription system should bill on cycles that match the supply (30, 60 or 90 days), sell bundles on subscription, let customers skip, swap or pause, retry failed payments, and keep renewals running if you change processor. Every renewal also follows rules: clear terms before payment, express consent, reminders and online cancellation.
- ROSCA requires clear terms before billing details, express informed consent and a simple way to stop charges.
- Visa requires a reminder at least 7 days before a trial ends and online cancellation; Mastercard requires a confirmation with cancellation instructions after sign-up.
- Shopify Subscriptions works with a limited list of gateways; WooCommerce Subscriptions costs $279 a year; BigCommerce needs an app or gateway.
- Typical supplement subscription churn is 5 to 8% a month, according to Eightx.
- The hardest thing to change later is who holds your subscribers' cards.

|---|---|

| Skip, swap, pause, change date | Keeps customers who would otherwise cancel |
| Customer portal | Self-service changes and cancellation online |

| Retries and card updates | Recovers renewals that fail |
| Processor choice and routing | Renewals keep running if one processor stops |
| Card portability | Subscribers keep paying if you change system or processor |

|---|---|---|---|
| 30 capsules, 1 a day | 30 days | Every 30 days | 45, 60 days |
| 90 capsules, 1 a day | 90 days | Every 90 days | 60, 120 days |
| Powder, 30 servings | 30 days | Every 30 days | 45 days for lighter users |
| 3-bottle bundle | 90 days | Every 90 days | 60 days |
- Let customers change the interval instead of cancelling when bottles pile up.
- Charge a few days before the supply runs out, leaving time for shipping.
- Send the renewal reminder before the charge, with a link to skip or change.

Keeping renewals alive
A renewal that fails is a subscriber lost without a decision. Typical supplement subscription churn is 5 to 8% a month, according to Eightx9Eightx, Supplement subscription churn rate benchmark, 2026. Three layers protect renewals.
- Smart retries: retry soft declines at different times and days, not immediately.
- Card updates: card account updater services refresh expired or replaced cards. See card account updater.
- Backup processor: if the main processor declines or stops, renewals route to a second one. See payment routing for supplement brands.

Watch out
Card tokens belong to the processor that stored them. If renewals depend on one processor and it closes your account, subscribers may have to enter their card again. Check portability before you choose a system: switching payment processor without losing cards.
