Switching Payment Processor for Supplement Brands Without Losing Cards

How a supplement brand moves saved cards and subscriptions to a new processor: what transfers, the PCI rules, step-by-step migration, and after a closure.

Article summary

TL;DR

Saved cards can move: the old processor sends an encrypted export of card data to a new processor that is PCI DSS Level 1 certified. Subscriptions don't move with them, so you rebuild plans, prices and next charge dates on the new system. Start the export as early as possible, keep the old account open for refunds and disputes, and test charges before renewals run.

  • Stripe transfers card data only to "another PCI DSS Level 1-compliant payment processor".
  • Stripe's export includes card details, emails and metadata, but not subscriptions, payment history or Link cards.
  • "Each PSP issues its own token format", so tokens rarely move as-is; card data is re-tokenized on import.
  • Imports usually run through PGP-encrypted files.
  • After a Stripe risk action, payouts are typically paused for 120 days: plan the switch alongside it.

Moves in the encrypted export

  • Card numbers and expiry dates
  • Customer emails and metadata, from Stripe

Stays behind

  • Processor tokens, re-created by the new processor
  • Cards saved through Link
  • Subscriptions and schedules
  • Payment history

Cards travel in the export. Everything about the subscription is yours to rebuild.

The migration, step by step

  1. Choose the new processor and confirm it is PCI DSS Level 1 and accepts imports1Stripe Docs, Request a payment data export, read October 26, 20263Revolut Developers, Payment method migration, read October 26, 2026.
  2. Request the export from the old processor, naming the new one; Stripe asks for its attestation of compliance and PGP key1Stripe Docs, Request a payment data export, read October 26, 2026.
  3. Export subscriptions yourself: plan, price, cycle, next charge date, discount, status.
  4. Map customers between the export and your subscription list by customer ID and email.
  5. Rebuild subscriptions on the new system with the same dates and prices.
  6. Test a few real charges and one refund before renewals run.
  7. Switch renewals cycle by cycle; don't charge anyone twice.
  8. Keep the old account open for refunds and disputes on past charges.

Keep renewals on the old account, or paused, until the import is tested.

Watch out

A new processor name on the statement creates "I don't recognize this" disputes. Keep your brand in the descriptor, and tell subscribers before the next charge if it changes.

Keep it from happening again

Fig. 3Four habits that make the next switch easy

  1. Two processors

Behind one checkout, so a closure moves volume instead of stopping it.

  2. Know where cards live

And how they would move, before you need it.

  3. Your own records

Plans, dates, prices and consent, kept outside the processor.

  4. Low disputes

    On both accounts, every month.

  • Two processors behind one checkout, so a closure moves volume instead of stopping it: payment routing.
  • Know where cards live and how they'd move, before you need it.
  • Keep your own subscription records: plans, dates, prices, consent.
  • Keep disputes low on both accounts: chargebacks for supplement brands.

How Tagada helps

Frequently asked questions

Can I move my customers' saved cards to a new processor?

Yes, usually. The old processor sends an encrypted export to a new processor that is PCI DSS Level 1 certified; Stripe requires the new processor's attestation and PGP key. Tokens themselves don't move; the new processor re-tokenizes.

Do subscriptions transfer when I change processor?

No. Stripe, for example, doesn't export subscriptions or payment history. Export them yourself and rebuild plans, prices and next charge dates on the new system before renewals run.

Will customers have to re-enter their card?

Not if the card export succeeds. Cards saved through Stripe's Link are excluded, and some may have expired, so plan a card update email for those.

How long does a processor migration take?

It depends on both processors and your data. Start the export on day one, and keep renewals paused or on the old account until the import is tested.
