Does Stripe Allow Supplements?
Stripe allows supplements unless they are unsafe or make harmful claims. The exact policy lines, closure triggers, reserves and card exports.
Article summary
Allowed, with conditionsTL;DR
Yes. Stripe accepts dietary supplements without prior approval. It prohibits "pseudo-pharmaceuticals or nutraceuticals that are not safe or make harmful claims", along with unclear trial offers and high-pressure upselling. Stripe decides what falls under those lines, and its agreement lets it close an account at any time.
- Supplements appear only on Stripe's prohibited list, and only when unsafe or making harmful claims; there's no supplement entry on the restricted list.
- Stripe "may terminate this Agreement or close User's Stripe Account at any time".
- "In some rare cases, a reserve may be required indefinitely".
- Stripe exports saved cards only to a PCI DSS Level 1 processor, and doesn't export subscriptions.
- Visa flags US merchants at a 1.5% fraud and dispute ratio since April 1, 2026.

Most brands that lose Stripe were accepted on day one. Something changed: a claim, a trial offer or a dispute ratio. This guide is part of our hub on nutraceutical payment processing.
What Stripe's policy says
| Policy line (exact wording) | List | What it means for a supplement brand |
|---|---|---|
| "Pseudo-pharmaceuticals or nutraceuticals that are not safe or make harmful claims" | Prohibited | Product and marketing both in scope |
| "Negative option marketing, negative option membership clubs and reduced price trials with unclear or hidden pricing" | Prohibited | "Free bottle, just pay shipping" offers that roll into auto-ship |
| "Businesses that make outrageous claims, use deceptive testimonials, use high-pressure upselling..." | Prohibited | Miracle claims, fake reviews, forced upsell chains |
| "Evasion of card network chargeback monitoring programmes" | ProhibitedUse | Splitting volume across accounts to stay under a threshold |

Stripe adds that its list is "representative of prohibited categories, but this is not an exhaustive list"1Stripe, Restricted and prohibited businesses, updated September 22, 2026. A product not named can still be refused.

Prohibited, restricted, or allowed?
Guides disagree: some say Stripe bans supplements, others call them "restricted". Stripe's own page settles it.
| Stripe list | What it means | Supplements? |
|---|---|---|
| Prohibited | Not supported | Only if "not safe or make harmful claims"1Stripe, Restricted and prohibited businesses, updated September 22, 2026 |
| Restricted | "Require additional due diligence by Stripe" before support1Stripe, Restricted and prohibited businesses, updated September 22, 2026 | NoSupplement entry |
| Neither | AllowedReviewed later | Safe supplements with lawful claims |
The catch: allowed means no review at sign-up. The review comes later, when something draws attention.
On Shopify, the same lines reach you through Shopify Payments, whose US terms say prohibited categories "are provided by each Payment Processor"10Shopify Payments Terms of Service (US), read October 9, 2026.

What each message means
- Payouts paused: typically for 120 days from the first email, then a review of the balance.
- Account closed: a reserve can also apply, for a period set case by case.
- Export requested: cards go to a PCI DSS Level 1 processor. Subscriptions don't.

| Vitamins and minerals, one-time purchase, no disease claims | Fits |
| Subscription with price, frequency and cancellation shown before payment | FitsIf disputes stay low |

Lower the risk
- Use structure/function claims. "Supports joint comfort" is a supplement claim; "relieves arthritis" is a drug claim721 CFR 101.93, Certain types of statements for dietary supplements.
- Print the FDA disclaimer wherever a claim appears721 CFR 101.93, Certain types of statements for dietary supplements.
- Show the full offer before the card field: price today, renewal price, frequency, how to cancel.
- Remind before a trial converts: Visa requires at least 7 days' notice6Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of April 18, 2026, tables 5-20 and 5-21.
- Offer online cancellation for online orders6Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of April 18, 2026, tables 5-20 and 5-21.
- Review affiliate pages: an advertiser can be liable "even when the endorser is not liable"816 CFR 255.1(d), Consumer endorsements.
These address Stripe's policy lines. They lower the risk without removing it; Stripe still decides.
