Can You Sell Supplements on Shopify?

Shopify allows supplement stores, but Shopify Payments excludes unverified health claims. What's allowed, gateway fees, and what to do if you're cut off.

Article summary

Allowed, payments vary

TL;DR

Yes. Shopify's platform rules don't ban supplements, and many supplement brands run on Shopify. The risk is in payments: Shopify Payments excludes "pseudo pharmaceuticals", meaning products with health claims no regulator has verified, and applies its processors' lists. If it refuses or closes you, you can connect one third-party card processor, for an extra 0.2% to 2% per order.

  • Shopify's Acceptable Use Policy doesn't mention supplements or health claims.
  • Shopify Payments excludes products that make health claims "that are not verified by a local or national regulatory body".
  • Its US terms say prohibited categories "are provided by each Payment Processor", and Stripe prohibits unsafe nutraceuticals or harmful claims.
  • Shopify allows one card processor at a time; a third-party one costs 2% (Basic) to 0.2% (Plus) per order.
  • Shopify Subscriptions works with a short list of gateways.

What Shopify Payments excludes

Watch out

Claims live everywhere, not only on product pages: ads, emails, reviews you feature, influencer posts. Reviewers read all of it.

There's no cascade inside Shopify's checkout: a single card processor means a pause stops card payments. A backup needs a checkout or payment layer outside it: payment routing for supplement brands.

Subscriptions on Shopify

Keep your Shopify Payments account

  1. Structure/function claims only, with the FDA disclaimer821 CFR 101.93, Certain types of statements for dietary supplements.
  2. No disease words in product names, URLs, tags or reviews you feature.
  3. Clear subscription terms before the card field: price, frequency, how to cancel.
  4. No unclear trials or "just pay shipping" offers that roll into auto-ship7Stripe, Restricted and prohibited businesses, updated September 22, 2026.
  5. Visible contact and refund policy.
  6. Watch disputes monthly, by product and offer.

These lower the risk of a refusal or closure. Shopify Payments still decides.

Frequently asked questions

Does Shopify allow supplements?

Yes. Shopify's Acceptable Use Policy doesn't mention supplements. The limits come from Shopify Payments, which excludes products with health claims no regulator has verified, and from its processors' lists.

Why did Shopify Payments close my supplement store's payments?

Usually claims read as unverified health claims ("pseudo pharmaceuticals"), trial offers, or disputes. The store itself can stay open: connect a third-party processor, with a 0.2% to 2% fee per order.

Can I use a high-risk processor on Shopify?

Yes, as your one third-party card processor, if it's supported by Shopify. You pay Shopify's third-party fee on top of the processor's rate. Check it works with your subscription app.

Do I need FDA approval to use Shopify Payments?

No. The FDA doesn't approve supplements before sale. What matters is that your claims are lawful structure/function claims, not disease claims, so they aren't treated as unverified health claims.
