Payout Timing for Supplement Brands

When supplement brands get paid on Stripe and Shopify Payments, why payouts are delayed or held, and how to plan cash around reserves.

Article summary

TL;DR

On Stripe, US payouts normally settle in 2 business days, but the first payout takes 7 to 14 days depending on industry and risk. Shopify Payments can pay into Shopify Balance in 1 business day, up to 5 for new merchants. Supplement brands also meet reserves, verification holds and, on Stripe, a 120-day payout pause when it finds unacceptable risk. Plan cash for all four.

  • Stripe US settlement: 2 business days.
  • Stripe's first payout: "within 7–14 days, depending on your industry, country of operation, and risk level".
  • Shopify Payments to Shopify Balance: as little as 1 business day; up to 5 for new merchants.
  • Shopify holds payouts for missing information, bank details or "product eligibility" issues.
  • Stripe "will typically restrict or pause payouts... for 120 days" when it acts for unacceptable risk.

Plan your cash

Example

You sell $60,000 a month on a 10% reserve held 90 days, with 2-day payouts. About $18,000 sits in reserve at steady state, and roughly two days of sales are in transit. If a review pauses payouts, a month of sales ($60,000) can wait with it.

  • Keep a buffer of at least one month of ad spend and inventory payments.
  • Don't pay suppliers from expected payouts during a launch.
  • Spread volume over two processors once you have recurring revenue: payment routing.

Frequently asked questions

How long do Stripe payouts take for a supplement brand?

Normally 2 business days in the US. The first payout takes 7 to 14 days depending on industry, country and risk level, and risk criteria can keep an account off the default timing.

Why are my Shopify Payments payouts on hold?

Shopify names missing information, incorrect bank details and product eligibility issues. For supplements, eligibility often means claims read as unverified health claims. Reply to Shopify's email with what's requested.

Why is Stripe holding my supplement store's money?

Either a reserve, which keeps part of each sale for a period, or an unacceptable risk action, which typically pauses payouts for 120 days before a formal review.

Can I get paid faster?

Build history with low disputes, then ask for faster settlement and a reserve review. Stripe notes risk criteria can prevent the default timing; a processor that underwrites you first sets terms up front.
