Supplement and Nutraceutical Payment Processing

What processors check before approving a supplement brand, the reserves and chargeback thresholds to expect, and the rules that keep an account open.

Article summary

TL;DR

Supplement brands can start on Stripe, Shopify Payments or PayPal, but those providers review the business later, and a claim, a trial offer or a dispute spike can close the account with funds held. A stable setup has three parts: a merchant account underwritten for supplements, billing that follows Visa and Mastercard subscription rules, and a second processor ready to take over.

  • Stripe prohibits nutraceuticals "that are not safe or make harmful claims", and can close an account "at any time".
  • Since April 1, 2026, Visa flags a US merchant at a 1.5% fraud and dispute ratio, down from 2.2%.
  • High-risk processors publish rolling reserves of 5% to 10% and approvals in 1 to 5 business days.
  • PayPal can hold a balance for up to 180 days.
  • The FDA does not approve supplements before sale; processors judge how you sell, not only what.

Why supplement brands lose payment processing

Selling supplements is legal. Processors drop brands for how they sell: what the ads promise, how subscriptions bill, and how many customers dispute. The FDA "does not approve dietary supplements or their labeling"14FDA, Questions and Answers on Dietary Supplements, August 27, 2026, so processors judge how you sell, not only what.

  1. What the ads promise

Nutraceuticals that "make harmful claims" are prohibited at Stripe; Shopify Payments treats unverified health claims as "pseudo pharmaceuticals".

  2. How subscriptions bill

Trials with unclear or hidden pricing are prohibited at Stripe; Mastercard requires registration and MCC 5968 for negative option billing.

  3. How many customers dispute

Visa flags a US merchant at 1.5% of settled transactions, with at least 1,500 cases a month.

Watch out

The FDA disclaimer doesn't protect an ad. The FTC says it "won't cure an otherwise deceptive ad"15FTC, Health Products Compliance Guidance, December 2022. Underwriters read landing pages the same way.

What "pseudo-pharmaceutical" means in practice: pseudo-pharmaceutical rules on Stripe and Shopify.

Do Stripe, Shopify Payments, PayPal and Square accept supplements?

Yes, with conditions each provider controls. None underwrites your brand before you start, so the review comes later, when volume or disputes grow.

A decline or a closure moves the volume instead of stopping it.

Illustrative example. Routing rules are set per store.

A new brand selling one-time purchases can start on an aggregator. A subscription brand should plan a second processor before scaling: payment routing for supplement brands.

Watch out

Several accounts are a continuity plan. Splitting volume to stay under a network threshold is evasion, which Stripe lists among prohibited uses of its services1Stripe, Prohibited and restricted businesses, read October 9, 2026.

They look at who you are, what you sell, how you sell it and how past customers reacted.

Chargeback thresholds

Visa excludes disputes resolved through a pre-dispute solution from its count8Visa, Acquirer Monitoring Program fact sheet, 2025 v2.

Example

A brand settles 12,000 orders in March and gets 150 disputes plus 60 fraud reports. Its Visa ratio is 210 ÷ 12,000 = 1.75%, over 1.5%. With 210 cases it is under Visa's 1,500 minimum, but its processor still sees the ratio and can act on its own limits.

Frequently asked questions

Why are supplements considered high risk?

Processors price three risks: health claims regulators can challenge, subscription billing customers forget and dispute, and the category's history of trial-offer abuse. A one-time vitamin brand with clear labels sits at the low end; weight loss on auto-ship with a trial sits at the high end.

Can I sell supplements with Stripe or PayPal?

Yes, if the product is safe and the marketing makes no harmful claim. Neither reviews your brand before you start, so the risk is a later closure; PayPal can hold the balance for up to 180 days.

What chargeback ratio is too high for a supplement merchant?

Visa's US threshold is 1.5% of settled transactions, fraud and disputes together, with at least 1,500 cases a month. Processors usually act earlier under their own terms; Soar Payments states it needs under 2% to approve.

Do I need more than one merchant account?

A second account protects recurring revenue: if one processor closes or declines, the other takes the volume. It must never be used to hide a dispute ratio, which networks treat as evasion.

Does the FDA have to approve my supplement first?

No. The FDA says it "does not approve dietary supplements or their labeling". Processors check the label disclaimer, that no claim names a disease, and how you bill.
