Chargeback Alerts for Supplement Brands

How Ethoca, Verifi CDRN, RDR and Order Insight stop disputes before they count, why they matter for Visa's ratio, and RDR rules for supplement brands.

Article summary

TL;DR

Chargeback alerts tell you a customer is disputing a charge before it becomes a chargeback, so you can refund first. Ethoca covers mostly Mastercard, Verifi's CDRN and RDR cover Visa, and Order Insight answers the bank's questions earlier. For a supplement brand on subscription they matter twice: Visa excludes disputes resolved through a pre-dispute solution from its monitoring ratio.

  • Visa's VAMP ratio excludes disputes resolved through a pre-dispute solution.
  • Ethoca (Mastercard-owned) and Verifi (Visa-owned) both send alerts; CDRN and Ethoca need a manual refund, RDR refunds automatically under your rules.
  • One alert vendor reports RDR at 30.6% and Ethoca at 42.1% of 1,812,015 alerts it handled.
  • The same vendor charges $15 per RDR alert; prices vary by reseller.
  • Alerts don't replace prevention: clear terms, reminders and cancellation.

Illustrative example.

A 1.75% ratio can drop under 1.5% if enough disputes are refunded at the alert stage. That's the point of alerts, and it's allowed: Visa built the exclusion1Visa, Acquirer Monitoring Program fact sheet, 2025 v2.

  1. Auto-refund

Cancelled-recurring disputes on renewals, and low amounts such as one bottle.

Costs and overlaps

Set up in order

  1. Fix the causes first: terms, reminders, cancellation, descriptor6Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of April 18, 2026, tables 5-20 and 5-21.
  2. Add Ethoca and CDRN to cover Mastercard and Visa alerts.
  3. Add RDR with narrow rules for renewals and low amounts.
  4. Add Order Insight so banks see order details before a dispute.
  5. Review monthly: alerts by product, offer and reason; widen or narrow rules.

Prevention first, then alerts from the narrowest rules to the widest.

Frequently asked questions

What are chargeback alerts?

Notifications that a cardholder is disputing a charge, sent before it becomes a chargeback, so the merchant can refund first. Ethoca covers mostly Mastercard; Verifi's CDRN and RDR cover Visa.

Do refunded alerts count in my chargeback ratio?

For Visa, disputes resolved through a pre-dispute solution are excluded from the VAMP ratio. Check with your processor how its own limits count them.

What's the difference between Ethoca and Verifi?

Ethoca is Mastercard-owned, Verifi is Visa-owned. Both send alerts you resolve by refunding; Verifi's RDR refunds automatically under your rules, and Order Insight shares order details at the inquiry stage.

Are chargeback alerts worth it for a supplement brand?

Usually, when subscriptions bring cancelled-recurring disputes. Each alert costs a fee plus the refund, but keeps the case out of Visa's ratio. Fix terms, reminders and cancellation first.
