Chargebacks for Supplement Brands: Thresholds, Prevention and Alerts Setup

The Visa and Mastercard chargeback thresholds for supplement brands in 2026, why customers dispute, the reason codes, and prevention that works.

Article summary

TL;DR

Visa and Mastercard both monitor merchants at 1.5% in 2026, but count differently: Visa adds fraud reports to disputes, Mastercard counts chargebacks on the previous month's sales. Supplement disputes come mostly from forgotten subscriptions, unclear trials, unrecognized descriptors and "it didn't work". Clear terms, reminders, easy cancellation and fast refunds prevent most of them.

  • Visa's US threshold is 1.5% of settled transactions, fraud plus disputes, since April 1, 2026, with at least 1,500 cases a month.
  • Disputes resolved through a pre-dispute solution are excluded from Visa's count.
  • Mastercard's Excessive Chargeback Merchant level starts at 1.5% and 100 chargebacks; its ratio uses the previous month's transactions.
  • At Visa's "Excessive" level, fees of $8 per fraud report or dispute are reported.
  • Subscription disputes usually land under cancelled-recurring codes such as Visa 13.2 or Mastercard 4841.

12,000 settled orders, 150 disputes and 60 fraud reports in March: Visa ratio = 210 ÷ 12,000 = 1.75%. Over 1.5%, but under Visa's 1,500 minimum. What never to do

  1. Don't spread volume

Splitting sales across accounts to stay under thresholds is evasion: Stripe prohibits it9Stripe, Restricted and prohibited businesses, updated September 22, 2026, and networks treat it the same.

  2. Don't reprocess

Charging a disputed transaction again adds a second dispute, not a recovery.

  3. Don't hide cancellation

A cancel button customers can't find moves the cancellation to their bank.

Frequently asked questions

What is the chargeback threshold for supplement merchants in 2026?

Visa monitors US merchants at 1.5% of settled transactions, counting fraud reports and disputes, with at least 1,500 cases a month, since April 1, 2026. Mastercard starts at 1.5% and 100 chargebacks. Processors usually act earlier.

How do I calculate my chargeback ratio?

For Visa: fraud reports plus disputes in the month, divided by settled transactions the same month. For Mastercard: chargebacks in the month, divided by transactions the previous month. Track both by product and offer.

Why do supplement brands get so many chargebacks?

Subscriptions and trials customers forget, descriptors they don't recognize, and results that don't match the ad. Each has a fix: reminders, easy cancellation, a clear descriptor and realistic claims.

Should I fight every supplement chargeback?

No. Respond when your records prove consent and delivery, or when Visa's CE 3.0 fraud evidence applies. Accept cases where the customer cancelled or terms were unclear, and fix the cause.
