Chargeback Alerts: Ethoca, Verifi and RDR
How chargeback alerts work: Ethoca, Verifi CDRN, RDR and Order Insight, what they remove from your dispute ratio, what they cost and how to set rules.
Article summary
TL;DR
Chargeback alerts tell you a cardholder is disputing a payment before it becomes a chargeback, so you can refund or answer first. Verifi (Visa) offers RDR and Order Insight, Ethoca (Mastercard) offers Ethoca Alerts and Consumer Clarity. Disputes resolved this way don't count in your dispute rate, which keeps you out of monitoring programs.
- Stripe: disputes resolved through RDR or Ethoca Alerts "don't count towards your overall dispute rates".
- Visa's VAMP ratio excludes disputes resolved through a pre-dispute solution.
- With Order Insight, if 2 earlier orders share the IP address and an email or delivery address, Visa's CE 3.0 rules make the issuer block the dispute.
- RDR only resolves full-amount disputes on payments that weren't refunded.
- One alert vendor lists US prices of $15 per RDR or CDRN alert and $29 per Ethoca alert.

A dispute you refund at the alert stage costs you the sale. A chargeback costs you the sale, a fee, and a point on the ratio that decides your reserve and your account. That's the case for alerts. The ratio itself is explained in chargeback rate.

Blocked
Order Insight with CE 3.0: the issuer must block the dispute.
Auto-resolved
RDR or Ethoca rules refund it. It doesn't count in your rate.
Refunded on alert
CDRN or Ethoca alert: you refund before it becomes a chargeback.
Blocked is best: no refund, no fee, no ratio.
Vendors describe RDR as automatic, and CDRN and Ethoca as manual with 72 hours to act3Chargeback.io, RDR vs CDRN vs Ethoca, read October 27, 2026 (alert vendor). More on RDR: rapid dispute resolution.

Order Insight and Compelling Evidence 3.0
Order Insight answers the bank before any dispute exists. When a cardholder doesn't recognize a charge, the bank's agent looks up the order: products, amounts, delivery address, IP address1Stripe Docs, How dispute prevention works, read October 27, 2026.
It can also stop a dispute entirely. Under Visa's Compelling Evidence 3.0 rules, Visa picks the 2 to 5 most recent non-fraud earlier orders from the same cardholder1Stripe Docs, How dispute prevention works, read October 27, 2026. The issuer must block the dispute if:
- [ ] at least two earlier orders exist, with complete product descriptions,
- [ ] they share the IP address with the disputed order,
- [ ] and at least one email or delivery address matches1Stripe Docs, How dispute prevention works, read October 27, 2026.
The dispute is then never filed: no fee and no change to your dispute rate1Stripe Docs, How dispute prevention works, read October 27, 2026. It applies to Visa disputes for "10.4 Other Fraud, Card Absent Environment"1Stripe Docs, How dispute prevention works, read October 27, 2026.
Watch out
CE 3.0 only works if every payment carries the data. Send the IP address, customer email, product description and shipping address on every order1Stripe Docs, How dispute prevention works, read October 27, 2026.
What alerts cost

|---|---|
| RDR | $15 per alert (Chargeback.io)3Chargeback.io, RDR vs CDRN vs Ethoca, read October 27, 2026 (alert vendor) |

Prices vary by reseller and processor; Stripe lists its own on its pricing page1Stripe Docs, How dispute prevention works, read October 27, 2026. Budget the refunds too: every resolved alert is a refund.
CDRN and Ethoca can both fire on the same payment. Deduplicate by order so you don't pay twice.
How to set RDR rules
A broad RDR rule refunds disputes you could have won4Chargeback.io, Rapid Dispute Resolution (RDR) alerts, July 31, 2026 (alert vendor). Start narrow.
| Case | Suggested rule | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Low amounts | Auto-resolve | Fighting costs more than the refund. Stripe's example: all potential fraud disputes under 10 USD1Stripe Docs, How dispute prevention works, read October 27, 2026 |
| Cancelled subscriptions disputed after the renewal | Auto-resolve | Hard to win, and the subscriber has left |
| Fraud claims on repeat customers with matching IP and email | Don't auto-resolve | CE 3.0 can block them1Stripe Docs, How dispute prevention works, read October 27, 2026 |
| High-value orders | Review manually | Worth checking the evidence |
| Partial disputes or refunded payments | Not covered by RDR | Handle manually1Stripe Docs, How dispute prevention works, read October 27, 2026 |
Set up in order
- Fix the causes: clear terms, renewal reminders, easy cancellation, a recognizable descriptor. Visa requires reminders before a trial or promo ends5Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of April 18, 2026, tables 5-20 and 5-21.
- Turn on Order Insight and Consumer Clarity so banks see the order before a dispute.
- Send full data on every payment so CE 3.0 can block repeat-customer fraud claims.
- Add RDR with narrow rules for low amounts and cancelled renewals.
- Add Ethoca Alerts for Mastercard.
- Review monthly: alerts by product, offer and reason. Widen or narrow the rules.
Alerts catch what prevention missed. Fix the causes first, or you'll pay a fee on every dispute you could have avoided.
What alerts don't replace
Alerts don't fix the reason customers dispute. If a trial converts without a clear reminder, you'll refund at the alert stage every month. Prevention ideas: how to prevent chargebacks.
Alerts also only cover disputes filed after you enroll. Earlier ones still arrive as chargebacks1Stripe Docs, How dispute prevention works, read October 27, 2026.
By industry
| Industry | What changes | Guide |

| Skincare | Refill cycles and "no results" claims | Chargeback alerts for skincare brands |
