How to Start a Supplement Brand Online
The launch checklist for an online supplement business, in order: company, product, labels, claims, policies, payments, first 90 days.
Article summary
TL;DR
Set up the company, pick a cGMP manufacturer, write labels and claims that follow FDA rules, publish clear policies, then choose how you take payments. The order matters: processors review your labels, claims, site and offers, so a brand that sets up payments last gets approved faster and keeps its account longer. Plan cash for a reserve in the first months.
- The FDA doesn't approve supplements before sale; you still notify it within 30 days of using a structure/function claim.
- Products must be made under cGMP (21 CFR Part 111), and serious adverse events reported.
- Stripe accepts supplements but prohibits harmful claims and unclear trials, and can close an account at any time.
- Underwritten processors ask for ID, company documents and bank statements, and decide in 1 to 5 business days.
- Published rolling reserves run 5% to 10% of sales.
