How to Start and Scale a Supplement Brand

Launch a supplement brand step by step: FDA and FTC rules, manufacturer, store, payments and channels, then what to fix when you scale.

Article summary

TL;DR

To start a supplement brand, pick one product for one buyer, use a manufacturer that follows FDA good manufacturing practices, write a label and claims you can prove, then set up a store and a payment processor that accepts supplements before you buy ads. To scale, shift your focus from first orders to reorders, order value, a backup processor and clean tracking.

  • The FDA does not approve supplements or their labels before sale: "by law, FDA does not approve dietary supplements or their labeling".
  • A structure/function claim needs the FDA statement on the label and a notice to the FDA within 30 days of first marketing.
  • Manufacturing must follow cGMP rules in 21 CFR Part 111; claims need "competent and reliable scientific evidence" under FTC guidance.
  • TikTok Shop sells supplements by invitation only, and since January 2026 Amazon requires third-party verification for every supplement.

Stage 1: the rules to meet before you sell

Supplements are not pre-approved, but they are regulated. These are the obligations every US brand meets before the first order.

The FDA statement reads:221 CFR 101.93, Certain types of statements for dietary supplements

This statement has not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

21 CFR 101.93(c), the statement next to a structure/function claim

Watch out

The FDA statement does not protect a misleading ad. The FTC says it "won't cure an otherwise deceptive ad"4FTC, Health Products Compliance Guidance, December 2022. Check every claim before it goes on the label, the site or an ad. This is general information, not legal advice.

Pick the product and the manufacturer

Start narrow. One product for one clear buyer is easier to explain, to advertise and to reorder.

Store, checkout and payments

Set up payments before you set up ads. A processor that refuses or closes your account after launch stops everything.

Stage 2: your first customers

The goal of stage 2 is one channel that brings customers at a cost you can recover.

  1. Build one offer, usually 1, 3 or 6 months of supply. See the supplement sales funnel.
  2. Send traffic to a focused page, not your homepage.
  3. Track purchases server-side from day one, so your CAC is real. See Meta and TikTok ads for supplement brands.
  4. Measure CAC and conversion weekly against supplement brand benchmarks.

Know your CAC before you raise the budget.

Blended supplement CAC runs $80 to $130 in 2026, according to Eightx13Eightx, Supplement CAC and payback benchmarks 2026, June 7, 2026. Know your number before you raise the budget.

Stages 3 and 4: what breaks when you scale

Growth exposes the parts you set up in a hurry. These are the usual breaking points.

What breaksWhyWhat to put in place
Payback gets longerCAC rises as audiences widenRaise order value: increase AOV
Customers don't reorderNoFollow-up timed on the supplyReorder flows, subscriptions and memberships: subscriptions and churn
Renewals failExpired cards, declinesRetries and card updates: failed payment recovery
One processor holds everythingA review or closure stops sales and renewalsA second processor: payment routing
Ads get rejectedMore creatives, more claims, more affiliatesA claims library; you are liable for endorsers516 CFR 255.1(d), Guides concerning the use of endorsements and testimonials
Reports disagreeBrowser tracking loses eventsServer-side tracking: server-side tracking
Chargebacks riseMore volume, more trial and subscription disputesClear terms and alerts: chargebacks for supplement brands

Example

A brand at $50,000 a month on one processor and one ad account has two single points of failure. Adding a backup processor and server-side tracking before doubling spend protects both.

  1. Payback gets longer

CAC rises as audiences widen. Raise order value.

  2. Customers don't reorder

Reorder flows and subscriptions timed on the supply.

  3. One processor holds everything

A second processor, so one review doesn't stop sales and renewals.

  4. Reports disagree

Server-side tracking, so the CAC you scale on is real.

Healthy brands pay back CAC in 3 to 6 months, and subscription cohorts in 1 to 3 months, according to Eightx13Eightx, Supplement CAC and payback benchmarks 2026, June 7, 2026. Work through yours in LTV and CAC for a supplement brand.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need FDA approval to sell supplements?

No. "By law, FDA does not approve dietary supplements or their labeling" before they are sold. You still must follow good manufacturing practices, use the FDA statement next to structure/function claims, and notify the FDA within 30 days of first marketing a product with such a claim.

How much does it cost to start a supplement brand?

It depends on the order minimum of your manufacturer, packaging, testing and your first ad budget. Public figures vary widely and are rarely sourced. Budget for inventory, third-party testing, a compliant website, and enough ad spend to reach your first customers at a CAC you can measure.

Can I sell supplements on Shopify or Amazon?

Yes, with conditions. Shopify Payments applies the rules of its processors, and Stripe prohibits nutraceuticals that are unsafe or make harmful claims. Amazon requires third-party verification for every supplement since January 2026. See can you sell supplements on Shopify?.

Do I need a high-risk merchant account for supplements?

Not always. A brand with plain labels, no aggressive trials and low disputes can often use a mainstream processor. Processors still review supplements more closely and may ask for labels and proof of claims. Plan a second processor so one review does not stop your sales.

How do supplement brands scale?

By improving what happens after the first order: reorders, subscriptions, order value and payback. Then they protect the base: a backup processor, server-side tracking and a claims process for ads and affiliates. More spend only works once each customer pays back the CAC in a few months.
