How to Increase AOV for a Supplement Brand
Bundles, order bumps, one-click upsells, subscriptions and shipping thresholds: how supplement brands raise order value and keep their margin.
Article summary
TL;DR
Supplement brands raise average order value with five levers: multi-month bundles, order bumps at checkout, one-click upsells after payment, bundled subscriptions and a free shipping threshold set just above current AOV. Rank them by what they add to contribution margin, not to AOV. A bigger order that ships at a deeper discount can earn you less.
- Bundles are the main AOV lever in supplements: Eightx reports lifts of 15 to 25% for 2-bottle and 25 to 40% for 3-bottle offers (June 2026, sources not disclosed).
- Order bumps and post-purchase upsells add to AOV without discounting the main offer.
- Stripe prohibits businesses that "use high-pressure upselling". Keep every add-on optional and clearly priced.
- Subscribe-and-save on a single bottle usually lowers first-order AOV. Put the subscription on a bundle.
- Judge each lever on contribution per order, not on AOV alone.

The 6 AOV levers for supplement brands
Each lever works at a different moment of the purchase. Use them together, but test them one at a time.
| Lever | When the customer sees it | Typical offer | Effect on AOV | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Multi-month bundle | Product page | 3 bottles for the price of 2.5 | High | Margin rate drops with the discount |
| Product stack | Product page, cart | Two complementary SKUs together | Medium to high | Inventory and kitting |
| Order bump | Checkout, before payment | A small add-on, one checkbox | Low to medium | Clutters the checkout if irrelevant |
| One-click upsell | Right after payment | A bigger supply or a second product | Medium | Seen as pushy if it repeats |
| Subscription on a bundle | Product page, checkout | Bundle delivered every 60 or 90 days | Medium, plus retention | Trial and renewal rules |
| Free shipping threshold | Cart, checkout | Free shipping above a set amount | Low to medium | Gives away shipping margin |

Bundles and multi-month supplies
A supplement runs out on a schedule. Selling 3 or 6 months at once raises AOV and delays the next decision, so the customer has fewer chances to drift away.
Eightx reports these lifts for supplement bundles, without publishing the underlying data2Eightx, Bundle and AOV strategy for supplement margin in 2026, June 7, 2026:
| Bundle type | Reported AOV lift |
|---|---|
| 2 bottles | 15 to 25% |
| 3 bottles | 25 to 40% |
| Two different products | 20 to 30% |

How to build them:
- Anchor on the supply. "1 month / 3 months / 6 months" reads better than "1 / 3 / 6 bottles".
- Make the middle option the default. Most buyers pick the highlighted tier.
- Show the price per month, not only the total.
- Build stacks from your own co-purchase data, not from a generic "frequently bought together" widget.

Order bumps: the small add-on before payment
An order bump is a pre-checked or one-click option on the checkout page, added before the customer pays. It works best when it is small, related and obvious.
Good bumps for a supplement brand:
- A travel-size or sample of a complementary product
- A pill organizer or shaker
- Faster shipping or shipping protection
- A second bottle at a lower price

Keep one bump per checkout. Price it well below the main order, so the decision takes a second. Setup and examples: order bumps for supplement brands.
One-click upsells after payment
A post-purchase upsell appears right after the order is paid. The customer adds it with one click, without entering their card again.
Watch out
Stripe lists businesses that "use high-pressure upselling" among those it prohibits1Stripe, Prohibited and restricted businesses, read October 9, 2026. An upsell flow with countdowns, repeated offers and hidden prices can put your processor account at risk.
| Do | Avoid |
|---|---|
| One or two offers, then the confirmation page | A chain of four or five offers |
| The price and what is added, shown clearly | "Yes, upgrade my order" with the price in small print |
| A clear "No thanks" button | Making the decline link hard to find |
| A related product or a bigger supply | Turning the upsell into an unannounced subscription |
If the upsell adds a recurring charge, the subscription rules apply: clear terms and express consent before the charge3Restore Online Shoppers' Confidence Act, 15 U.S.C. § 8403. Setup: one-click upsells for supplement brands.
Subscriptions: put them on the bundle
Subscribe-and-save on a single bottle gives a discount on a small order. First-order AOV goes down, even if lifetime value goes up.
| Offer | First-order AOV | Next order | Retention |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 bottle, one-time | Base | Customer decides | Low |
| 1 bottle, subscribe and save | Lower (discount) | 30 days | Medium |
| 3-bottle bundle, one-time | Higher | Customer decides | Medium |
| 3-bottle bundle on subscription, every 90 days | Higher | 90 days | High |

Free shipping threshold: just above your current AOV
A threshold works when most carts are a small step away from it.
- Take your current AOV, after discounts.
- Set the threshold 10 to 30% above it.
- Show a progress bar in the cart: "You are $8 away from free shipping."
- Check that the margin on the added items covers the shipping you now pay.
Shipping costs are a common reason for abandoned carts, and about 70% of carts are abandoned across ecommerce4Baymard Institute, Cart abandonment rate statistics, updated September 22, 2025. A clear threshold shown early helps on both counts.
Protect your margin: AOV is not the goal
A bigger order is only better if it leaves you more money after product, shipping and discount.
Example (illustrative figures): a bottle sells for $40 and costs $8 to make. Shipping costs you $6.
Offer Revenue Product cost Shipping Contribution 1 bottle $40 $8 $6 $26 3 bottles at 15% off $102 $24 $7 $71 3 bottles at 30% off $84 $24 $7 $53 The 30% bundle still beats one bottle, but it leaves $18 on the table versus 15% off.

Track two numbers for every lever: contribution per order, and contribution per customer over 90 days. The second shows whether a bundle delays reorders more than it should. Work through it in LTV and CAC for a supplement brand.
Test before you roll out
Change one lever at a time and let the test run long enough to see reorders.
- Pick one lever and one page (product page, checkout or post-purchase).
- Split traffic between the current version and the new one.
- Measure AOV, conversion rate and contribution per visitor, not AOV alone.
- Wait for the reorder window on bundles and subscriptions before declaring a winner.
- Keep the winner and move to the next lever.
