One-Click Upsells for Supplement Brands
Post-purchase upsell offers that fit supplements, how many to show, how the second payment works, and the rules that keep your processor happy.
Article summary
TL;DR
A one-click upsell is an offer shown right after payment that the buyer adds without entering their card again. For supplements, the best offers are a bigger supply of what they just bought, a complementary product, or the same product on subscription with clear terms. Show one or two offers at most, with a visible price and a clear "No thanks".
- The strongest supplement upsell is usually more of the same: upgrade 1 month to 3 months at a better price per month.
- Stripe prohibits businesses that "use high-pressure upselling": limit offers, show prices, make declining easy.
- An upsell that starts a subscription needs clear terms and express consent under ROSCA.
- When the buyer clicks to accept, the charge is customer-initiated; a charge without that click falls under merchant-initiated rules.
- Some upsell tools don't support Apple Pay or Google Pay orders; check before you rely on them.

6 upsell offers that fit supplements
| Offer | Shown to | Example | Why it works |
|---|---|---|---|
| Supply upgrade | Buyers of 1 month | "Make it 3 months: $34 a month instead of $40" | Same product, already chosen |
| Complementary product | Buyers of a single-goal product | Magnesium buyer offered a sleep blend | Completes a routine |
| Subscription on the same product | One-time buyers | "Get it every 30 days, cancel anytime" | Builds recurring revenue |
| Second flavor or format | Powder or gummy buyers | A second flavor at a lower price | Variety for daily use |
| Bundle of bestsellers | First-time buyers | A starter stack at a one-time price | Introduces the range |
| Gift for someone else | Seasonal buyers | Same product, shipped as a gift | New customer through the buyer |

Match the offer to the order: a 6-month buyer should not see a "make it 3 months" offer.
How many offers, and in what order
- One offer, then the confirmation page. Add a second only if it is clearly different.
- If the first is declined, the second should be smaller, not a repeat.
- Never more than two. Long chains feel like a trap, and Stripe lists "high-pressure upselling" among prohibited practices1Stripe, Prohibited and restricted businesses, read October 9, 2026.
- Show the order confirmation clearly after the last offer, so the buyer knows the purchase is done.

Upsell tools allow more steps: one documents up to three sequential offers, while noting that more steps don't always mean more revenue4Order Editing, One-click upsell best practices, read October 26, 2026.
How the payment works
The upsell charges the card the buyer just used. How you do it matters for your processor and for disputes.
| Question | What to check |
|---|---|
| Who starts the charge? | If the buyer clicks to accept, it is customer-initiated (CIT); a charge without that action is merchant-initiated (MIT) and must follow stored-credential rules3Merchant Risk Council, Card on file done right: how to stay compliant with the stored credential mandate, October 22, 2025 |
| Consent to keep the card | The stored-credential framework expects an indication that customer consent was obtained3Merchant Risk Council, Card on file done right: how to stay compliant with the stored credential mandate, October 22, 2025 |
| One charge or two? | Some setups add the upsell to the order, others create a second charge; the buyer should see both on the confirmation |
| Descriptor | The charge should show a name the buyer recognizes, to avoid disputes |
| Wallet orders | Some upsell tools can't charge Apple Pay or Google Pay orders4Order Editing, One-click upsell best practices, read October 26, 2026 |
- The buyer clicks to acceptThe charge is customer-initiated (CIT).Keep the click and the consent on record.
- A charge without that clickIt is merchant-initiated (MIT).Follow stored-credential rules.
- A wallet orderSome upsell tools can't charge Apple Pay or Google Pay orders.Check your tool before relying on it.
- A second charge on the statementA common source of unauthorized transaction disputes.Use a recognizable descriptor and list every charge.
Watch out
A second charge the buyer doesn't recognize on their statement is a common source of "unauthorized transaction" disputes. Say on the confirmation page and in the email exactly what was charged.
Upsells that add a subscription
Turning a one-time buyer into a subscriber is a strong upsell. It is also the most regulated.
- Clear terms on the upsell screen: price, frequency, next charge date and how to cancel2Restore Online Shoppers' Confidence Act, 15 U.S.C. § 8403.
- Express consent: a clear "Yes, subscribe" action, separate from the first order2Restore Online Shoppers' Confidence Act, 15 U.S.C. § 8403.
- Trials: if the upsell starts a trial, Visa requires the terms shown separately, express consent and a reminder before the trial ends5Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of April 18, 2026, tables 5-20 and 5-21.
- Confirmation email with the subscription terms and the cancellation link.

| Refunds on upsells | Upsell refunds ÷ upsells sold | High: buyers didn't mean it |
| Disputes on upsell charges | Disputes ÷ upsell charges | Unclear descriptor or consent |
| Repeat rate | Customers reordering at 90 days | Does the upsell delay or help reorders? |
