Payout Schedules and Settlement Times

How long card payouts take at Stripe, Adyen and Shopify Payments, why a payout is delayed or on hold, and how to get your money faster.

Article summary

TL;DR

Card sales usually reach your bank 2 to 3 business days after the sale: 2 business days on Stripe in the US, 2 or 3 on Adyen, up to 5 on Shopify Payments to an outside bank. First payouts take longer, 7 to 14 days on Stripe. Later payouts mean a reserve, a verification hold or a risk review.

  • Stripe's US settlement timing is 2 business days; Germany and the UK start at 7 calendar days, then 3 business days.
  • Stripe "typically schedules your initial payout to complete within 7–14 days", depending on industry, country and risk.
  • Adyen's default delay is 2 or 3 business days; if most sales are American Express, it's 7.
  • Shopify Payments pays Shopify Balance in as little as 1 business day, an outside bank in up to 5, plus up to 3 for the bank.
  • When Stripe pauses payouts for risk, it's typically for 120 days from the first notice.

The definitions are in our glossary: payout and settlement. This guide compares timings by provider and explains why a payout is late.

What T+2 means

Processors write payout timing as T+X: the sale day (T) plus X days. T+2 means a Monday sale is paid on Wednesday, if no weekend or holiday sits in between. Stripe notes that payouts scheduled on weekends or holidays arrive the next business day, and your bank "might take additional time"1Stripe Docs, Payouts, read October 27, 2026.

Why a payout arrives late

Fig. 2Four holds, four different fixes

  1. Verification hold

Send the document asked for. Payouts restart once it's checked.

  2. Reserve

A share of each sale, released on the schedule in the notice.

  3. First payout

7 to 14 days on Stripe while the account builds history.

  4. Risk pause

Typically 120 days on Stripe, then a formal review.

Only one of them is in your hands today.

Watch out

A verification hold is the easiest to fix and the most often ignored. Shopify pauses payouts until the information it asked for is provided4Shopify Help Center, Shopify Payments account holds, read October 26, 2026. Check your email and your dashboard first.

When payouts are paused for risk

A risk pause is different from a reserve. Under Stripe's Unacceptable Risk Policy, Stripe can "restrict or pause payouts to the User's bank account for 120 days" from the first notification email5Stripe, Unacceptable Risk Policy, read October 27, 2026. At the end it runs a formal review, which can release all or part of the balance, keep holding it, or cancel the payout5Stripe, Unacceptable Risk Policy, read October 27, 2026.

What to do when it happens: merchant account closed and funds held.

How to get paid faster

  1. Answer verification requests the same day. It's the hold you control.
  2. Keep disputes and refunds low. They drive reserves and longer timing.
  3. Ship fast and track it. Long delivery windows are a common reason for reserves and slow settlement on new files9PaymentProviders.io, How to get approved by a payment provider as a new company, September 7, 2026.
  4. Ask for a review of your timing after a few clean months. Adyen can shorten the delay in some regions, subject to review2Adyen Docs, Sales day payout, read October 27, 2026.
  5. Use a daily schedule if your provider offers it.
  6. Split volume across processors so one hold doesn't stop all your cash.

Speed comes from history and clean numbers. A provider can shorten timing; it rarely does it on request alone.

Plan your cash around payouts

The OCC lists delayed settlement among the tools banks use for higher-risk internet merchants8OCC, Comptroller's Handbook: Merchant Processing, updated March 20, 2025. New or high-risk files often start on slower timing, for example weekly or T+7, per published practice9PaymentProviders.io, How to get approved by a payment provider as a new company, September 7, 2026.

Example

You sell $3,000 a day. On T+2, about $6,000 is in transit at any time. On T+7, about $21,000. Add a reserve on top, and plan ad spend and stock with the slower figure.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a payout take?

Usually 2 to 3 business days after the sale for cards: 2 on Stripe in the US, 2 or 3 on Adyen. Shopify Payments can take up to 5 business days to an outside bank, plus up to 3 for the bank.

Why is my first payout taking so long?

Processors hold the first payout while the account builds history. Stripe schedules it within 7 to 14 days of your first live payment, depending on your industry, country and risk level.

Why is my payout on hold?

The usual causes are a missing verification document, a reserve, a negative balance or a risk review. Check your email and dashboard for a request first: it's the one you can clear the same day.

Can I get paid the same day?

Some providers offer instant payouts. Stripe's usually arrive within 30 minutes, but new users aren't eligible at first.

How long can Stripe hold my funds?

For a risk pause, typically 120 days from the first notification, followed by a formal review. Reserves follow the period stated in the reserve email.
