High-Risk Payment Processing for Shopify Stores

High-risk payment processing on Shopify: what Shopify Payments excludes, using a third-party provider, the extra fee by plan, subscriptions and your options.

Article summary

TL;DR

A high-risk business can run on Shopify; the problem is Shopify Payments. It excludes categories such as pseudo pharmaceuticals, adult products and gambling, and applies its processors' lists. If it refuses or closes you, connect a third-party card provider: one at a time, with a Shopify fee of 0.2% to 2% per order depending on your plan.

  • Shopify Payments lists six prohibited categories, including "pseudo pharmaceuticals" and "adult products", and says the list "isn't exhaustive".
  • Its US terms say prohibited categories "are provided by each Payment Processor".
  • "You can have only one credit card payment provider activated at a time".
  • A third-party provider adds a Shopify fee of 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus.
  • Shopify Subscriptions works with a short list of payment gateways.

Shopify has two sets of rules: one for the store, one for the payments. Many businesses that Shopify Payments won't take can still sell on Shopify. This guide shows where the line is and what the alternative costs.

The store vs. the payments

Being allowed on the platform doesn't mean being allowed on Shopify Payments.

What Shopify Payments excludes

Shopify lists six "high-level categories for prohibited products and services"2Shopify Help Center, Shopify Payments eligibility, read October 27, 2026:

CategoryNote
Regulated or illegal products and servicesVaries by region
Financial products and services
Adult products
Pseudo pharmaceuticals"Pharmaceuticals and other products that make health claims that are not verified by a local or national regulatory body"
Gambling products and services
Counterfeit products

The list "isn't exhaustive and it varies depending on your region", and some business models "while legal, Shopify Payments can't support"2Shopify Help Center, Shopify Payments eligibility, read October 27, 2026.

Watch out

Pseudo pharmaceuticals is about claims, not ingredients. A legal product described with unverified health claims in ads, emails or featured reviews falls into it.

If Shopify Payments refuses or closes you

  3. Apply to a card provider that accepts your category before you deactivate anything: merchant account approval.

Your store keeps running. What changes is who processes the cards, and what it costs.

Example

A store selling $50,000 a month on the Basic plan pays Shopify about $1,000 a month on top of its card provider's fees. On Plus, about $100.

Subscriptions on Shopify

Shopify Subscriptions works with a short list of payment gateways6Shopify Help Center, Shopify Subscriptions considerations, read October 9, 2026. If your card provider isn't on it, you'll need a subscription app that supports that provider, or a checkout outside Shopify for recurring orders. Check this before you migrate subscribers.

Checkout outside Shopify

Some brands keep Shopify for the store and the catalog, and move checkout to a separate checkout that supports several processors. The one-provider limit then no longer applies to that checkout. What changes on the CRM side: Shopify checkout for supplement brands. Running WooCommerce instead: high-risk payment processing for WooCommerce.

  3. Separate checkout

The more volume you have, the more the right-hand setup pays.

Frequently asked questions

Does Shopify allow high-risk businesses?

The platform and Shopify Payments have different rules. Shopify Payments excludes six categories, including pseudo pharmaceuticals and adult products. Many of these businesses can still sell on Shopify with a third-party card provider.

What is a high-risk payment gateway for Shopify?

A card provider that accepts your category and integrates with Shopify as a third-party provider. You can activate only one card provider at a time, and Shopify adds 0.2% to 2% per order depending on your plan.

Why did Shopify Payments close my store's payments?

Usually an excluded category, claims read as unverified, rising disputes, or an unanswered request. The email or admin notice states the reason or what's needed.

Can I use two payment processors on Shopify?

Not two card providers at the same time: "only one credit card payment provider activated at a time". A separate checkout can route between several.

Do Shopify Subscriptions work with high-risk gateways?

Only with the gateways Shopify supports for subscriptions. Check before you switch, or use a subscription app that supports your provider.
