Checkout Optimization for Supplement Brands

Why shoppers leave a supplement checkout and how to fix it: costs, fields, express pay, subscription terms, declines and mobile.

Article summary

TL;DR

A supplement checkout converts better when the total cost is clear before payment, the form is short, guests can pay without an account, Apple Pay and Google Pay are offered, and subscription terms are stated above the pay button. Then check the part most brands forget: how many payments get declined, and whether a second processor can catch them.

  • 40% of US shoppers who abandon a checkout cite extra costs; 18% leave because an account is required (Baymard).
  • The average checkout has 11.3 form fields; Baymard says most sites need only 8 (2024).
  • 10% of abandoners leave because their card was declined.
  • Subscription terms must be clear before the card is entered, with express consent (ROSCA).
  • Health and wellness stores convert at 1.7% on mobile vs. 3.0% on desktop at the median.

Payments: declines, 3D Secure and a backup processor

A shopper who reaches the pay button and gets declined is the most expensive loss.

  • Measure your decline rate by reason code in your processor dashboard.
  • Use 3D Secure where it helps: it shifts fraud liability, but adds a step. Apply it on risky orders, not everywhere.
  • Retry soft declines with the right timing, and let the buyer try another method.
  • Route to a backup processor when the first one declines or is unavailable. See payment routing for supplement brands.

Mobile first

Health and wellness stores convert at a 1.7% median on mobile, against 3.0% on desktop5Eevy AI, Shopify conversion rate benchmarks 2026, health and wellness, March 29, 2026. Most supplement ad traffic is mobile.

  • Express payment buttons first, card form second.
  • Numeric keyboard for card and phone fields.
  • No pop-ups over the checkout.
  • Large tap targets for the bump and the subscription choice.
  • Test on real phones, not only in a desktop browser.

Frequently asked questions

How can I reduce checkout abandonment on my supplement store?

Show the full cost early, allow guest checkout, cut the form to about 8 fields, offer Apple Pay and Google Pay, and state subscription terms clearly. Extra costs cause 40% of abandonments and forced accounts 18%. Then track declined payments, which cause another 10%.

Should a supplement checkout be one page?

Usually yes, or as few steps as possible: 17% of shoppers who abandon say the checkout was too long or complicated. A one-page checkout with express payment at the top works especially well on mobile.

How should I show a subscription at checkout?

Show the price, frequency, renewal date and how to cancel right above the pay button, and ask for express consent with an unchecked box or a clear choice. ROSCA requires clear terms before billing information is collected. For trials, Visa also requires a reminder before the trial ends.

Why are payments declined on my supplement checkout?

Declines come from the buyer's bank (insufficient funds, fraud rules) or from your processor setup. Track decline codes, retry soft declines, offer another payment method, and route to a backup processor. See payment routing for supplement brands.
