Merchant Accounts for New Info Product Businesses

How a new online course or coaching business gets a merchant account with no processing history: options, documents, what underwriters read, terms.

Article summary

TL;DR

A new course or coaching business can start on a course platform's payments, its own Stripe account, or an underwritten merchant account. With no processing history, underwriters judge your documents, website and offer: ID, company papers, bank statements, a refund policy, and a sales page that sells a skill, not an income. High-ticket programs and plans get the closest look.

  • Stripe doesn't name courses or coaching, but prohibits "get rich quick" schemes and "high-pressure upselling" (read November 2, 2026).
  • Without history, PaymentCloud asks for ID, a signed application, a voided check and "three months of bank statements" (read November 2, 2026).
  • Visa requires a customer service contact, your country at checkout and, if you restrict refunds, a "click to accept" policy (October 24, 2026).
  • No educational merchant code (MCC 8299) is in Visa's high-risk integrity program; risk comes from the offer.
  • PaymentCloud says coaching merchants "could be paying closer to 3.95% + $0.25 per transaction".

A light start is fine for a $49 course. A $3,000 coaching program sold on payment plans is exactly what triggers a review on an account that wasn't underwritten for it. If Stripe finds an unacceptable risk, it "will typically restrict or pause payouts" for 120 days3Stripe, Unacceptable risk policy, updated July 29, 2026.

What underwriters ask when you have no history

Processing statements are the usual proof of a track record. Without them, underwriters lean on the owner and the company.

What they read on your website

Underwriters review the site before they read your numbers.

Fig. 2Four things an underwriter reads on a course site

  1. The basics Visa requires

A customer service email or phone, the address for correspondence, and your country "on the same screen view as the checkout screen" or within the checkout pages (5.8.4.1)6Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026, sections 5.4.2.5 (p. 391) and 5.8.4.1 (p. 445), table 11-118 (p. 779 to 780).

  2. A refund policy

  3. Legal pages

PaymentCloud lists your legal name, contact details, privacy, terms and refund pages, and HTTPS4PaymentCloud, Coaching merchant account page, read November 2, 2026 (vendor claims).

  4. The sales page

What the buyer gets, how long, in what format. Visa's 13.5 dispute covers sellers who suggest "that an income will be generated"6Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026, sections 5.4.2.5 (p. 391) and 5.8.4.1 (p. 445), table 11-118 (p. 779 to 780), so income hooks count against you.

The site is read before your numbers.

What makes a new info product account riskier

Your category is not the problem. Most courses fall under MCC 82997Visa Merchant Data Standards Manual, April 2026, and no educational code is in Visa's high-risk integrity program8Visa Integrity Risk Program, acquirer guide, April 6, 2023. The offer decides.

Mistakes that sink a first application

  • Declaring a low ticket and then selling a $2,000 program.
  • Leaving payment plans or memberships out of the application.
  • An unfinished site: no refund policy, no contact, lorem ipsum.
  • Income screenshots as social proof.
  • Applying with a different description from your sales page. Picking a category to fit is circumvention, not optimization.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a merchant account with no processing history?

Yes. Underwriters replace processing statements with other proof: ID, company documents, a voided check and bank statements, often three months. A finished website with a refund policy and a clear description of what students get matters as much as the paperwork.

What is the best payment processor for a new coaching business?

The one underwritten for your real offer. Stripe works for low-ticket courses with clear terms. Course platform payments are simplest but add fees on entry plans. High-ticket coaching and payment plans fit an underwritten account that knows those prices before your first sale.

Why are coaching businesses considered high-risk?

Not because of the category: MCC 8299 isn't in Visa's high-risk program. Processors see risk in high tickets, long delivery that's hard to prove, and income promises that lead to "misrepresentation" disputes. Logged delivery and a sales page without income claims lower it.

Is Stripe enough to start an online course business?

Often, for low-ticket courses with clear terms. The risk comes later: a launch with large payments or a dispute spike can trigger a review, and Stripe typically pauses payouts for 120 days when it finds an unacceptable risk. Keep a backup processor ready before a big launch.

How long does approval take for a new info product business?

It depends on the provider and the file. Published vendor claims range from "the next day" (PaymentCloud) to "24 to 72 hours" (Corepay). Missing documents or a sales page with income claims are the usual causes of delay.
