How to Get an Info Product Merchant Account Approved
The documents, sales page fixes and delivery proof underwriters want from course and coaching sellers, and what to do if your application is declined.
Article summary
TL;DR
Send a complete file and fix the offer before you apply. Underwriters want ID, business and bank documents, and processing history if you have it. For courses and coaching, they also read your sales page for income promises and testimonials, check your refund policy, and look at your program's length. Proof that buyers access what they paid for helps.
- High-risk processors ask for a photo ID, a signed application, a voided check and 3 months of bank statements (PaymentCloud, read November 2, 2026).
- Soar Payments publishes a chargeback ratio under 2% as a condition to be accepted.
- Visa dispute condition 13.5 covers offers where "the Merchant suggests that an income will be generated" (rules of October 24, 2026).
- Stripe lists "longer-than-average delivery windows" among the reasons for a reserve, a point that fits multi-month coaching programs.
On this page
This guide is part of our hub on info product payment processing. The general guide, for any business: merchant account approval.
Do you need an underwritten account at all?
Not always. Many course sellers run fine on a course platform or Stripe. An underwritten account fits when the ticket, the delivery period or the offer makes a sudden closure likely.
| Your profile | Usual starting point | When to apply for an underwritten account |
|---|---|---|
| Courses and ebooks under a few hundred dollars | Course platform or Stripe | When volume grows or you add aggressive upsells |
| Coaching programs of several months, paid upfront or in plans | Underwritten account, plus a backup | Before your first big launch |
| Business, trading or income programs | Expect refusals from mainstream processors4Stripe, Prohibited and restricted businesses, read November 2, 2026 | Only after the sales page is rebuilt around the skill, not the income |

The documents
Processors publish similar lists. Expect most of these.
Missing processing history is not a refusal by itself. It usually means a smaller limit or a reserve at the start: info product processing fees and reserves.
What underwriters read on your sales page
The sales page is the part of an info product file that gets most scrutiny. Each risky element maps to a rule someone else enforces.

Your delivery and refund setup
Underwriters know info product disputes turn on delivery. Show you can prove it.
Access logs
Logins, lessons opened, session attendance, with dates and IP. For a disputed digital sale, Visa asks for a description of what you sold and the date you delivered it, plus 2 or more of: IP address, device ID, the buyer's name and email on their profile, a profile they accessed and you verified before the purchase, access to your site on or after the purchase date, or the same device and card in an earlier undisputed purchase5Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026, condition 13.5 and table 11-7.
A written refund policy
With its conditions, shown before payment.
Clear delivery terms
Start date, number of sessions, access period.
Payment plan terms
If you offer them: Visa requires express consent to an agreement shown "separately from the general purchase terms," with the schedule and cancellation policy10Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026, tables 5-19 and 5-20.
Numbers they ask for
Have these ready. They decide your limits and any reserve.
- Average and maximum ticket: a $5,000 program is reviewed differently from a $97 course.
- Expected monthly volume, and launch peaks if you sell by cohort.
- Delivery period: how many months between payment and end of program6Stripe Support, Reserves: frequently asked questions, read November 2, 2026.
- Share of sales on payment plans and the number of installments.
- Refund and dispute history, from your current processor.
- Main line of business, which sets your MCC: usually 8299 for courses and coaching, 5815 for ebooks9Visa, Merchant Data Standards Manual, April 2026.
If you're refused
A refusal from one acquirer does not close every door. Ask why, fix that point, then reapply or apply elsewhere.
- Ask for the reason: offer, history, documents or ownership.
- Fix the sales page and policies first if the offer was the issue.
- Check whether a past processor placed you on the MATCH list: see the MATCH list explained.
- Apply with a processing history: a few months on a course platform helps.
A refusal names a cause. Fix that cause on the site before any new application.
Watch out
Never show a different site to the underwriter than to your buyers. Card networks treat it as concealment, and it ends in termination.
