Ad Attribution for Fitness Brands
How fitness brands measure which ads really sell equipment and sports nutrition: store data, MER, new-customer CAC, surveys and holdout tests.
Article summary
TL;DR
Don't run a fitness brand on the ROAS that Meta, Google or TikTok report: each platform credits itself. Use store orders as the truth, judge the whole budget with MER (revenue ÷ total ad spend) and new-customer CAC, ask buyers where they heard of you, and test your biggest channel with a holdout before scaling it.
- Polar's median ROAS is 3.14x for "Sports & Outdoor" and 1.63x for "Health & Wellness" (4,000+ Shopify brands, August 2026).
- Polar's median CAC is $27.66 in "Sports & Outdoor" against $72.66 in "Health & Wellness".
- MER, total revenue divided by total ad spend, checks the whole system without trusting any platform's credit.
- Fitness demand moves with "routine, seasonality, and motivation spikes", so a single model won't explain it, according to Admetrics (May 2026).
- Sports nutrition reorders and renewals inflate ROAS; split first orders from repeat revenue before judging a campaign.

This guide is part of our playbook on the best ecommerce platform for fitness brands. Getting the purchase data right comes first: server-side tracking for fitness brands.
Why attribution is harder for fitness brands
Fig. 1Five reasons the pixel misses fitness sales
Long equipment decisions.
A buyer sees a rack on TikTok, reads reviews, measures the garage and buys a week later on another device. The platform that showed the first ad may never see the sale.
Recurring sports nutrition.
Reorders and subscription renewals land in blended revenue, though this month's ads didn't cause most of them.
Creators and coaches.
Much fitness demand starts with a creator's video or a coach's recommendation that no pixel records.
Seasons.
Demand rises and falls with routines and motivation3Admetrics, Email marketing attribution for fitness brands, May 25, 2026, so a campaign launched at a peak looks better than it is.
Restricted data.
If Meta categorizes your data source as health and wellness (more likely for supplements and weight loss offers), it can limit purchase optimization and reporting4PixelFlow, Meta's health and wellness restrictions and tracking, read November 2, 2026 (vendor documentation).
Each one makes platform ROAS less reliable.
The 5 numbers that matter
| Number | Formula | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Store revenue and orders | From your store, by day | The truth everything else is checked against |
| MER | Total revenue ÷ total ad spend | Whether the whole system is efficient2Admetrics, Marketing attribution for DTC e-commerce: the complete buying guide, 2026 |
| New-customer CAC | Total ad spend ÷ new customers | Whether acquisition pays back |
| First-order ROAS | First-order revenue ÷ ad spend | Ad efficiency without reorders and renewals |
| Platform ROAS | As reported by each platform | Relative performance inside one platform |

The further from the store, the less you trust it.
Benchmarks: equipment vs sports nutrition
Polar has no fitness category. Equipment sits closest to "Sports & Outdoor" and sports nutrition to "Health & Wellness".
| Polar category (median) | ROAS | CAC | Average order value | Conversion rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sports & Outdoor | 3.14x | $27.66 | $138.48 | 2.25% |
| Health & Wellness | 1.63x | $72.66 | $66 | 2.74% |

Read the gap with care. A sports nutrition brand earns its money on the second, third and tenth order, so a lower first-order ROAS can still pay back.
An equipment brand often gets one big order per customer, so it needs the first order to pay for the ad. Payback targets are in LTV and CAC for a fitness brand.
Watch out
A high ROAS on a nutrition account that mostly counts renewals says nothing about whether your ads find new customers. Separate first orders from repeat revenue before you judge any campaign.
Which number for which decision
| Decision | Use |
|---|---|
| Raise or cut the total ad budget | MER and new-customer CAC against payback |
| Move budget between platforms | New-customer CAC by platform, checked with surveys and tests |
| Choose campaigns inside Meta or TikTok | Platform-reported results, within that platform only |
| Choose creatives | Platform results plus first-order conversion |
| Decide if a channel works at all | An incrementality test |
| Judge a creator partnership | Code and link orders, plus survey answers |
Creators and codes
Creator videos and coach recommendations are a common way people find fitness brands, and pixels see little of it.
- Give each creator a code and a link. Count orders by code in your store, not in the ad platform.
- Expect undercounting. Many buyers search the brand later instead of using the link; the survey below catches part of them.
- Keep disclosures in order. Under the FTC's endorsement guides, "an advertiser may be liable for a deceptive endorsement even when the endorser is not liable"616 CFR 255.1(d), Guides concerning the use of endorsements and testimonials in advertising. A creator's results claim about your product is your claim.
Ask buyers: the post-purchase survey
A one-question survey on the thank-you page catches what tracking misses: creators, podcasts, gym word of mouth5Fairing, Ecommerce experts' most valuable post-purchase survey questions, read October 26, 2026.
- Ask one question: "Where did you first hear about us?"
- Offer a short list of your channels, including "A creator or coach" and "Other".
- Ask only new customers, so subscribers don't skew it.
- Compare with platform claims each month: if Meta claims 70% of sales and buyers name Meta 30% of the time, investigate.

Incrementality: does the channel cause sales?
An incrementality test turns a channel off for part of the audience or part of the country, and compares sales.
- Pick one channel with enough spend, often Meta prospecting or branded search.
- Hold out a share of the audience or a group of regions.
- Avoid peak weeks such as the start of the year, when demand moves on its own.
- Run for two to four weeks, longer for equipment with long decisions.
- Compare new customers between exposed and held-out groups, and use the result to discount or credit that channel's reported numbers2Admetrics, Marketing attribution for DTC e-commerce: the complete buying guide, 2026.
One channel per test, one test per quarter on your biggest channel.
Monthly routine
| Step | What you do |
|---|---|
| 1 | Reconcile store orders with each platform's reported purchases |
| 2 | Split revenue into equipment and nutrition, then into first orders, reorders and renewals |
| 3 | Compute MER and new-customer CAC |
| 4 | Read survey answers and creator code orders |
| 5 | Plan one incrementality test per quarter on your biggest channel |
