Memberships and VIP Clubs for Fitness Brands
Free loyalty tiers, nutrition clubs, paid VIP clubs and workout content memberships for fitness brands: what fits, what pays, and the billing rules.
Article summary
TL;DR
Fitness brands use four membership models: free loyalty tiers, a subscribe-and-save club on sports nutrition, a paid VIP club, and a membership to workout content. The last two charge customers again and again for a service, so they fall under negative option rules: clear terms, express consent, easy cancellation, and card network registration in some cases.
- Recurring online charges need clear terms before billing, express consent and a simple way to stop them (ROSCA).
- Stripe prohibits "negative option membership clubs" and trials "with unclear or hidden pricing".
- Mastercard requires merchants selling negative option offers at a distance to register, with MCC 5968; the yearly fee is $1,000 since May 1, 2026, as reported by PaymentCloud.
- Gymshark's program has 4 tiers, and its XP can't be spent: it only counts toward tier status (US page, read November 2026).
- Equipment buyers rarely reorder. A membership has to give them a reason to come back: accessories, nutrition or content.

This guide is part of our playbook on the best ecommerce platform for fitness brands. The general guide, for any business: free trials and negative option billing. Product subscriptions are covered in subscription billing for fitness brands.
4 membership models for fitness brands
Free loyalty tiers
Simplest. Points or XP per order or action; tiers with rewards. Rule: clear reward terms.
Subscribe-and-save club
Nutrition subscribers get member pricing and perks. Rule: subscription rules (ROSCA, Visa).
Paid VIP club
A monthly or yearly fee for discounts, free shipping, early access. Rule: negative option rules.
Content membership
Most regulated. A monthly or yearly fee for workout programs, classes or an app. Rule: negative option rules, plus trial rules if there is a trial.
Start with the model closest to how customers already buy. A nutrition brand starts with a subscribe-and-save club. An equipment brand starts with free tiers or content.
Equipment buyers vs. nutrition buyers
The two families come back for different reasons. Build the benefits around that.
| Benefit | Equipment buyers | Nutrition buyers | Cost to you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Member price on refills | Not relevant | Strong: reordered on a schedule | Margin on every member order |
| Free shipping | Strong on accessories | Strong on refills | Shipping cost |
| Early access to new gear or flavors | Strong | Good | Almost none |
| Workout programs for the gear they own | Strong | Good | Content production |
| Flexible deliveries (skip, pause, swap) | Not relevant | Strong: keeps members instead of cancellations | Almost none |
| Birthday or tenure reward | Good | Good | One-off credit |
For nutrition, flexible deliveries matter. In Tagada's customer portal, subscribers can skip a delivery, pause "within the pause limit you set (90 days by default)", or change the frequency or product8Tagada docs, Customer portal, read November 2, 2026.
Reward training, not just spending
Fitness is one of the few categories where you can reward the behavior behind the purchase: training.
- XP for actions: Gymshark awards XP for shopping, for signing up for emails or texts, and for attending its events7Gymshark, Gymshark Loyalty, US page, read November 2, 2026.
- Status, not cash: "You won't be able to spend these points but they will add up towards your tier status", across 4 tiers7Gymshark, Gymshark Loyalty, US page, read November 2, 2026.
- Tier rewards: money-off rewards, partner discounts and early access at higher tiers7Gymshark, Gymshark Loyalty, US page, read November 2, 2026.

Rewards come from the tier, not from every point.
This model costs less than a points currency, because rewards come from the tier, not from every point. It also fits brands with low reorder rates, such as equipment.
Paid clubs and content memberships: the rules
A paid club or a content membership bills customers again and again. These rules apply.
| Rule | What it requires |
|---|---|
| ROSCA | Material terms "before obtaining the consumer's billing information", "express informed consent", and "simple mechanisms" to stop charges (15 U.S.C. § 8403)1Restore Online Shoppers' Confidence Act, 15 U.S.C. § 8403 |
| Stripe | No"negative option membership clubs" or trials with unclear or hidden pricing (Stripe restricted list)2Stripe, Prohibited and restricted businesses, read November 2, 2026 |

Watch out
A club added through a pre-checked box, or bundled into the price of a treadmill, is the textbook negative option problem. It brings refunds, chargebacks and processor reviews. Make joining a separate, clear choice, with the price and renewal date next to the button.
Trials on content memberships follow the rules in trial offers for fitness brands.
Does the club pay for itself?
Illustrative figures. Nutrition members get 15% off refills and free shipping. A tub sells for $50, costs $15 to make, and shipping costs $7.
| Non-member | Member | |
|---|---|---|
| Price per tub | $50 | $42.50 |
| Shipping you pay | Customer pays | $7 |
| Contribution per order | $35 | $20.50 |
| Orders a year | 3 | 8 |
| Contribution a year | $105 | $164 |

Only if members really order more often.
The member earns you less per order but more per year, because they buy more often. If members would have ordered 6 times a year anyway, the club loses money. Measure the difference on real cohorts, not on assumptions.
Measure your program
| Metric | Formula | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Member share | Members ÷ active customers | Too high: the benefit may be too cheap |
| Orders per member vs. non-member | Orders a year, by group | The lift that pays for the benefits |
| Contribution per member per year | After discounts and shipping | Below non-members: rethink benefits |
| Cancellation rate (paid models) | Cancellations ÷ members | Spikes after renewals |
| Disputes on membership charges | Disputes ÷ membership charges | Unclear terms or reminders |
Retention around the program: subscriptions and churn and email flows for fitness brands.
