Subscriptions and Churn for Fitness Brands: When to Sell on Subscription and How to Keep Subscribers

Which fitness products fit a subscription, the churn to expect on protein and programs, why subscribers cancel, and a cancel flow that doesn't trap.

Article summary

TL;DR

Sell on subscription what customers use up and reorder: protein, pre-workout, and workout programs billed monthly. Don't force it on equipment. Expect the biggest drop in the first cycles. Keep subscribers by answering the real reasons they cancel (price, too much product at home, lost motivation), offering skip and pause, recovering failed payments, and keeping cancellation easy.

  • On Recharge, plain protein subscriptions processed 47.5% of scheduled renewals and lost 20.0% of subscribers to active cancellation (pooled data, June 2026); the typical store did better, at 54.2% and 15.6%.
  • Recurly reports a 4.25% median annual churn rate for ecommerce, 2.87 points voluntary and 1.38 involuntary (July 2026 data).
  • RevenueCat saw health and fitness app refund rates rise 20% in January, peaking at 2.4% in the third week (December 2024).
  • The FTC's "click-to-cancel" rule was vacated in July 2025; ROSCA and California law still require easy cancellation.

What churn to expect

There is no reliable fitness-wide churn benchmark. Three data points are worth knowing, each with its limits.

When subscribers leave

Churn is not spread evenly. It concentrates at the start, and for programs, after the New Year.

  • First cycles: the first full-price renewal is where many subscribers decide.
  • January for programs and apps: RevenueCat saw health and fitness app refund rates rise 20% in January, peaking at 2.4% in the third week3RevenueCat, How to tackle New Year subscription churn, December 18, 2024.
  • When tubs pile up: a subscriber who trains less than planned gets ahead of their deliveries and cancels instead of skipping.

Why they cancel, and what to answer

Match the answer to the reason. A blanket discount fixes only one of them.

ReasonAnswer
Price or valueLonger interval, bundle pricing, member perks; not a blanket discount
Too much product at homeSkip or a longer interval, offered before cancel
Training less, or stoppedPause for 1 to 3 months; for programs, a lighter plan
Wants a different flavor or productSwap instead of cancel
Life change, moving, injuryPause, with a clear restart date
Failed paymentRetries, card updates, backup processor

Fig. 4One reason, one answer

  1. Price or value

Longer interval, bundle pricing, member perks; not a blanket discount.

  2. Too much product at home

Skip or a longer interval, offered before cancel.

  3. Training less, or stopped

Pause for 1 to 3 months; for programs, a lighter plan.

  4. Wants a different flavor or product

    Swap instead of cancel.

  5. Life change, moving, injury

Pause, with a clear restart date.

  6. Failed payment

    Retries, card updates, backup processor.

A blanket discount fixes only one of them.

Answers from the table above.

Keep the answers about the product and the plan. No promise of results, in the cancel flow or anywhere else.

Failed payments make up 25% of lost subscriptions, according to Stripe4Stripe, How we built it: Smart Retries, January 23, 2024, and 90% of recovered payments come back within 10 days10Recurly, Failed payment recovery: a data-based strategy, April 30, 2026. A cancel flow that saves without trapping

A good cancel flow offers a better option, once, and then lets the customer go.

  1. Ask why, in one question.
  2. Offer the answer that fits the reason: skip for overstock, pause for a break, a swap for flavor fatigue.
  3. Confirm the cancellation in one click if they still want to leave.
  4. Send a confirmation with the end date.

One better option, once, then let the customer go.

Watch out

Hiding the cancel button or forcing a phone call doesn't keep customers; it sends them to their bank, and a chargeback costs more than a cancellation.

Frequently asked questions

Should I sell protein on subscription?

Yes, if customers reorder it on a regular schedule. Offer flexible cycles, flavor swaps, skip and pause, and keep cancellation easy. Know the baseline: on Recharge, plain protein subscriptions processed about half of scheduled renewals (54.2% at the typical store), so retention work starts on day one.

What is a good churn rate for a fitness subscription?

There is no reliable fitness-specific benchmark. Recurly reports a 4.25% median annual churn rate for ecommerce subscriptions (July 2026 data), and Recharge reports 15.6% active churn on plain protein at the typical store. Compare your cohorts over time and split voluntary from involuntary churn.

Why do subscribers cancel after the second order?

Usually because of price at full renewal, product piling up at home, or training less than planned. Offer the matching answer in the cancel flow: a longer interval, a skip, a pause or a flavor swap.

Is the FTC click-to-cancel rule in force?

No. The appeals court vacated it on July 8, 2025; the original rule text was restored in February 2026 and a new consultation opened in March 2026, with no new rule since. ROSCA still requires simple mechanisms to stop charges, and California requires online cancellation.
