How to Sell Fitness Products on Subscription

What fitness brands can sell on subscription, what processors accept, the Visa, Mastercard and ROSCA billing rules, and the checkout wording to use.

Article summary

TL;DR

Sell what customers use up: protein, pre-workout, consumable accessories, workout programs. Processors accept these subscriptions when terms are clear. Show price, frequency and how to cancel before the card field, get express consent, confirm right after sign-up, remind before trials end, and let customers cancel online. Hidden trial terms are what close accounts.

  • ROSCA requires the material terms before billing details, express informed consent and "simple mechanisms" to stop charges.
  • Visa requires a notice at least 7 days before a trial or introductory price ends, and online cancellation (April 2026 rules).
  • On Recharge, plain protein subscriptions processed 47.5% of scheduled renewals, pooled, over 12 months (June 2026).
  • New York bans selling muscle-building supplements to minors and requires proof of age at delivery.
  • Failed payments cause 25% of lost subscriptions, according to Stripe (January 2024).

What fitness brands sell on subscription

Subscriptions fit products that run out. Equipment rarely does.

ProductFits a subscription?Typical cycle
Protein powder, pre-workoutYesThe core case30, 60 or 90 days
Workout programs, coaching appsYesDigital accessMonthly or annual
Consumable accessories (chalk, grip tape, bands)Sometimes, as add-ons to a nutrition boxEvery few months
Racks, benches, machinesNo; one-time, sometimes with financingNot applicable

An equipment brand can still add recurring revenue with a program or a refill line. The billing rules below apply the same way.

Will processors accept it?

Yes, for clear offers. Stripe doesn't prohibit subscriptions; it prohibits "Negative option marketing, negative option membership clubs and reduced price trials with unclear or hidden pricing"7Stripe, Prohibited and restricted businesses, read November 2, 2026.

Age checks on muscle-building products

New York bans the sale of weight-loss and muscle-building supplements to minors and requires proof of age at delivery8New York General Business Law § 391-oo. That applies to every shipment of a subscription, not only the first order.

  • Ask for date of birth at checkout for those products.
  • Use an age-verified delivery option for New York addresses.
  • Keep it out of the copy too: ads for muscle gain are 18+ on TikTok. See advertising fitness products.

Renewals and retention

Most protein subscriptions don't last. Plan for churn and failed payments from the first order.

Skip and pause keep customers who would otherwise cancel. Failed renewals are the other leak: reducing payment declines for fitness brands and failed payment recovery.

On Shopify, Shopify Subscriptions works only with some gateways (Shopify Payments, PayPal Express, Authorize.net, Adyen, Stripe), and Stripe is "Available only to select merchants"11Shopify Help Center, Shopify Subscriptions considerations, read October 9, 2026. Checkout wording

Example

"2 lb tub every 30 days for $44. First charge today; next on December 2. We'll email you before each charge. Skip, pause or cancel anytime online in your account."

  • Next to the pay button, not only in the terms page.
  • A separate choice between one-time purchase and subscription.
  • The same wording in the confirmation email, with the cancellation link.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sell protein powder on subscription with Stripe?

Yes, with clear terms. Stripe prohibits unsafe nutraceuticals, harmful claims and trials "with unclear or hidden pricing", not subscriptions as such. Show the price, frequency and how to cancel before payment, and send a confirmation.

What do Visa and Mastercard require for subscriptions?

Visa: trial terms shown separately, a notice at least 7 days before a trial or intro price ends, and online cancellation. Mastercard: a confirmation with cancellation instructions, a notice 3 to 7 days before billing for cycles of 6 months or less, and online cancellation.

Should I let customers pause their subscription?

Yes. Each pause or skip is a renewal that could otherwise have become a cancellation or a dispute. A pause limit keeps it from becoming an indefinite hold.

Can I sell a fitness equipment subscription?

Machines and racks are one-time purchases. Brands add recurring revenue through workout programs, coaching apps or consumable refills. If you bill an app membership with hardware, the same subscription rules apply to the membership.

Do I need to check age for pre-workout subscriptions?

In New York, muscle-building and weight-loss supplements can't be sold to minors, and proof of age is required at delivery. Collect date of birth at checkout and use age-verified delivery for those products.
