Can You Sell Fitness Products on Shopify?

Shopify allows fitness stores. Shopify Payments excludes unverified health claims and medical devices. What it means for gear and sports nutrition.

Article summary

Allowed, payments vary

TL;DR

Yes. Shopify's platform rules don't restrict fitness equipment, sports nutrition or workout programs. The limits are in Shopify Payments, which excludes products with health claims "not verified by a local or national regulatory body" and "medical devices". If it refuses or holds your payments, you can connect one third-party card provider, for an extra 0.2% to 2% per order.

  • Shopify's Acceptable Use Policy names no fitness category; its rule is "You can't use Shopify to do anything that's illegal where you do business".
  • Shopify Payments excludes "pseudo pharmaceuticals" and "medical devices", and says its list "isn't exhaustive" (read November 2, 2026).
  • In June 2023, a Shopify reply on gym supplements said "products considered to be pseudo-pharmaceutical cannot be supported".
  • A Pilates equipment seller reported $28,000 held for 120 days in November 2023.
  • A third-party card provider costs 2% (Basic) to 0.2% (Plus) per order on top of its own rate.

The device line is easy to miss. The FTC's guidance describes an "ab sculpting" belt cleared by the FDA as a Class II medical device9FTC, Health Products Compliance Guidance, December 2022, example 49. A product regulated as a device sits in a category Shopify Payments lists as prohibited.

For sports nutrition, Shopify's own answer in 2023 was blunt: "products considered to be pseudo-pharmaceutical cannot be supported for use with Shopify Payments", and stores in that case "can look into using other gateway providers"10Shopify Community, "Can I sell teeth whitening kits and gym supplements on Shopify?", Shopify reply of June 15, 2023.

Watch out

Reviewers read more than product pages. Ad copy, featured reviews, influencer posts and transformation photos all count as claims. The rules: fitness merchant account compliance.

Why equipment stores get held

Equipment isn't on any Shopify Payments list. Holds still happen, usually on new stores with large tickets.

Example

In November 2023, a seller of Pilates reformers wrote that Shopify Payments "flagged our business as high risk, suspended payments and is now holding $28,000 for 120 days". The range had launched the month before. Two weeks later, another merchant reported $3,000 withheld on $500 to $1,500 bike sales11Shopify Community, "Shopify Payment / Stripe Suspension - High Value Items", posts of November 15 to December 1, 2023.

Shopify Payments' terms allow it: after a closure, a processor "may elect to continue to hold any funds deemed necessary"3Shopify Payments Terms of Service (US), read October 9, 2026. What helps before the first big order:

Fig. 2Before the first big equipment order

  1. Realistic shipping times

On product pages, and the tracking to prove delivery.

  2. A clear return policy

With who pays for freight on heavy items.

  3. Steady volume growth

Not a launch spike on a brand-new account.

Large tickets on a new store are what get held.

With one card provider in Shopify's checkout, a pause stops card payments. A backup needs a checkout or payment layer outside it: payment routing for fitness brands. If the account was closed after an application to Stripe failed too: does Stripe allow fitness products?

Subscriptions and installments

Refills. Protein and pre-workout are often sold on subscription. Installments. Lose Shopify Payments and you lose Shop Pay Installments with it.

Frequently asked questions

Can you sell supplements on Shopify?

Yes. Shopify's platform policy doesn't restrict them. Shopify Payments is the limit: it excludes products with health claims "not verified by a local or national regulatory body". Sports nutrition sold with lawful claims can qualify; strong performance or weight claims put it in the excluded category.

Does Shopify Payments allow fitness equipment?

Yes. No Shopify Payments category names fitness or gym equipment. Gadgets regulated as medical devices are the exception. Large tickets on a new store can still trigger a hold: one Pilates seller reported $28,000 held for 120 days in 2023.

Why is Shopify holding my funds for 120 days?

Shopify Payments' terms let the processor "continue to hold any funds deemed necessary" after a closure. Merchants report 120-day holds; it's an observed period, not a fixed rule. Ask support for the release date in writing, and move card payments to a third-party provider meanwhile.

What payment gateway can I use for supplements on Shopify?

A third-party card provider that accepts your products and integrates with Shopify. You can activate only one at a time, and Shopify adds 2% to 0.2% per order depending on your plan. Check it works with your subscription app. How to get approved: fitness merchant account approval.

Can I offer Shop Pay Installments on gym equipment?

Only with Shopify Payments active, and subject to Affirm's periodic review against its prohibited business policy. The Shopify page doesn't name fitness. If Shopify Payments drops you, Shop Pay Installments goes too.
