Payout Timing for Fitness Brands
When Stripe, Shopify Payments and PayPal pay a fitness brand, why high-ticket equipment and pre-orders trigger holds, and how to plan your cash.
Article summary
TL;DR
Stripe pays US merchants in 2 business days, and Shopify Payments in 1 to 5, once the account is established. The first payout takes longer, and five things can delay money after that: per-charge fraud holds, rolling reserves, verification holds, risk reviews and long holds after a closure. High-ticket equipment, pre-orders and launch spikes are the usual fitness triggers.
- Stripe's standard US payout timing is 2 business days; the first payout takes 7 to 14 days, by industry and risk.
- Stripe can delay a charge "likely to be disputed for fraud" and releases it "14 days from the notification date" if you do nothing.
- Delays are "most likely to be used on new Stripe accounts or those experiencing a sudden increase in risky transactions".
- After an unacceptable-risk action, Stripe "typically" pauses payouts for 120 days (policy updated July 29, 2026).
- PayPal can hold funds "for up to 180 days" (User Agreement, September 2026).

What triggers holds on fitness stores
Most holds come from risk the processor can see in your sales data.
- High-ticket orders: a run of $1,500 machines on a new account looks different from $30 accessories.
- Long delivery times: a Visa "not received" dispute can come up to 120 days after the last expected delivery date9Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026, condition 13.1. Freight and backorders keep that window open.
- Pre-orders: money taken now, goods shipped later. If you miss the date, the FTC requires you to offer cancellation with "a prompt refund"10FTC, Business Guide to the Mail, Internet, or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule, September 2011 (penalty amounts updated January 2025).
- Launch and seasonal spikes: a January surge or a product drop can look like "a sudden increase in risky transactions"2Stripe Support, Payout availability delays, read November 2, 2026.
- Sports nutrition claims: Shopify lists product eligibility among hold reasons4Shopify Help Center, Shopify Payments account holds, read October 26, 2026; unverified health claims fall under its "pseudo pharmaceuticals" definition11Shopify Help Center, Shopify Payments eligibility, read November 2, 2026.

What each message means
- Stripe fraud hold: one charge's payout is pushed back, then released 14 days after notice if you take no action.
- Shopify hold: product eligibility or requested information. Reply the same day with exactly what's asked.
- Stripe pause: typically 120 days, then a formal review.

Plan your cash
Example
An equipment brand sells $80,000 a month with a 10% reserve held 90 days and 2-day payouts. About $24,000 sits in reserve at steady state. If a January spike doubles sales and triggers a review, a full month of sales ($160,000) can wait with it, while freight and inventory bills keep coming.
Fig. 3Four habits that keep a hold from becoming a cash crisis
Keep a buffer
At least one month of ad spend and supplier payments.
Don't pay for inventory from expected payouts
During a launch or a pre-order campaign.
Ship before you scale ads
Tracking with the full delivery address shortens your dispute exposure9Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026, condition 13.1.
