Why Stripe Closed Your Fitness Brand Account (and What to Do Next)

Why Stripe closes fitness brand accounts, the 120-day payout pause, the 0.75% dispute line, appeals, card exports and how to keep selling.

Article summary

TL;DR

Stripe usually closes a fitness account for one of four reasons: large orders on a young account, disputes from late or damaged equipment, transformation claims, or a trial or upsell funnel on sports nutrition. For unacceptable risk, it typically pauses payouts for 120 days. First: appeal with evidence, request your card export, and move payments to an underwritten processor.

  • Stripe "will typically restrict or pause payouts to the User's bank account for 120 days" from its first email (policy updated July 29, 2026).
  • Stripe's docs say the industry "recognizes dispute activity above 0.75% as excessive", and a spike can trigger action earlier (read November 2, 2026).
  • "All disputes, whether they're won or lost, count towards your dispute rate".
  • Stripe exports saved cards only to a PCI DSS Level 1 processor, without subscriptions or Link cards.
  • Stripe can "close User's Stripe Account at any time" under its agreement (modified September 28, 2026).

Frequently asked questions

Why did Stripe close my fitness store's account?

Usually large orders on a young account, disputes from late or damaged deliveries, transformation claims, or unclear trials and upsells. The notice rarely says which. Check what changed in your products, ads, offers and shipping times in the last months.

How long will Stripe hold my funds?

When Stripe acts for unacceptable risk, it typically pauses payouts for 120 days from its first email, then decides to release, keep holding or cancel the payout. A separate reserve can last longer. Ask support for the release date in writing.

What dispute rate is too high for Stripe?

Stripe's docs say the industry standard treats dispute activity above 0.75% as excessive, and that a spike can trigger a monitoring program earlier. Won and lost disputes both count. Visa's own line for US merchants is 1.5%.

Can I appeal a Stripe account closure?

In some cases, yes, through the Dashboard as the notice explains, and a second appeal may be possible. Send delivery proof, supplier invoices, claims evidence and what you've fixed. Some fitness merchants report instant refusals; prepare a new processor at the same time.

Can I keep my subscribers after Stripe closes my account?

Request the card export to a PCI DSS Level 1 processor. Stripe doesn't export subscriptions, payment history or Link cards, so rebuild plans and charge dates on the new system before the next refill date.
