Stripe Closed or Banned Your Account: Funds, Timelines and Next Steps

Stripe closed or paused your account: what its terms allow, where the 120 days come from, how to appeal, export your cards and keep selling.

Article summary

TL;DR

When Stripe acts on an account it sees as an unacceptable risk, it typically pauses payouts for 120 days from its first email, then reviews the balance: release all or part, keep holding, or cancel the payout. Appeal through the Dashboard, request your card data export to a PCI DSS Level 1 processor, and don't close the account yourself.

  • Stripe "will typically restrict or pause payouts" for 120 days from its first email, under its Unacceptable Risk Policy updated July 29, 2026.
  • Its agreement, modified September 28, 2026, lets it "close User's Stripe Account at any time"; in Australia, with 30 days' notice.
  • The agreement lists 13 triggers, from "excessive Disputes" to a business model changed "without Stripe's prior consent".
  • Stripe exports saved cards only to a PCI DSS Level 1 processor; Link cards, subscriptions and payment history aren't included.
  • "Once a Stripe account is closed, it can't be reopened," and you stay responsible for its refunds and disputes.

Paused, reserved or closed: what Stripe actually did

Start with the email and the Dashboard banner. Stripe emails the reason to the address on the account and shows "a red banner at the top with more information"5Stripe Support, Why was my Stripe account closed?, read November 2, 2026. The wording tells you which of four situations you're in.

Why Stripe closes accounts

Stripe doesn't need a specific reason. Its agreement says: "Stripe may terminate this Agreement or close User's Stripe Account at any time"2Stripe Services Agreement, General Terms, sections 10.1 and 13.6, modified September 28, 2026. In Australia, the same clause requires 30 days' notice2Stripe Services Agreement, General Terms, sections 10.1 and 13.6, modified September 28, 2026.

In practice, the Stripe Payments Terms list what lets Stripe pause payouts, hold a reserve or stop processing3Stripe Services Agreement, Service Terms: Stripe Payments Terms sections 5.3 to 5.5 and Stripe Financial Services Terms section 3.3, modified September 28, 2026. Grouped:

Trigger in Stripe's termsWhat it looks like on your account
"Excessive Disputes, Refunds or Reversals"A dispute spike after a promotion or a new offer
Goods "not immediately deliverable" without Stripe's consentPreorders, long shipping times, prepaid bundles
A material change in time between charge and fulfillmentBackorders that grow
A business model changed "without Stripe's prior consent"New products, new markets, a subscription added
A negative balance, or a "deterioration" of financial conditionRefunds bigger than incoming sales
A breach of the agreement, the law or card network termsA restricted product, or claims Stripe reads as harmful12Stripe, Restricted and prohibited businesses, updated September 22, 2026
Activity that is "fraudulent, suspicious or involve[s] criminal activity"Card testing, stolen cards, identity mismatch
A "Change of Control" or an insolvency eventA sale of the business, a funding problem

The notice rarely names one line. Look at what changed in the last 90 days: an ad, an offer, a product, an affiliate. Industry causes: supplement brands and skincare brands.

The 120 days: where the number comes from

From one Stripe document, and with a "typically". The Unacceptable Risk Policy says Stripe "will typically restrict or pause payouts to the User's bank account for 120 days from the date the User receives the initial email"1Stripe, Unacceptable Risk Policy, last updated July 29, 2026, read November 2, 2026. It applies to "all Stripe Users that use the Stripe Payments product"1Stripe, Unacceptable Risk Policy, last updated July 29, 2026, read November 2, 2026.

  4. OutcomeRelease all or part, keep holding, or cancel the payout

the clock starts at the first email, not at your last sale

Stripe, Unacceptable Risk Policy, last updated July 29, 2026.

The review has three possible outcomes1Stripe, Unacceptable Risk Policy, last updated July 29, 2026, read November 2, 2026:

  • Release all or part of the remaining balance to your bank account.
  • Keep holding all or part of it pending further review.
  • Cancel the payout of the remaining balance, if Stripe judges the risk will continue.

Why 120: cardholders can generally dispute a payment for up to 120 days at Stripe10Stripe Docs, How disputes work, read October 14, 2026. You will read 90 or 180 days elsewhere. Neither appears in Stripe's agreement as modified on September 28, 2026, which sets no fixed number of days2Stripe Services Agreement, General Terms, sections 10.1 and 13.6, modified September 28, 20263Stripe Services Agreement, Service Terms: Stripe Payments Terms sections 5.3 to 5.5 and Stripe Financial Services Terms section 3.3, modified September 28, 2026; the only figure Stripe publishes is the policy's "typically" 1201Stripe, Unacceptable Risk Policy, last updated July 29, 2026, read November 2, 2026.

Watch out

A reserve is a separate tool. Stripe says one may be required "in some rare cases" indefinitely9Stripe Support, Reserves FAQ, read October 27, 2026. Read which of the two your notice names. More: rolling reserves.

What Stripe can do with your balance meanwhile

More than hold it. Once a trigger applies, the Stripe Payments Terms allow Stripe to3Stripe Services Agreement, Service Terms: Stripe Payments Terms sections 5.3 to 5.5 and Stripe Financial Services Terms section 3.3, modified September 28, 2026:

  • Initiate reversals, sending payments back to cardholders.
  • Change the payout schedule, or "delay or cancel the payout of funds" to your bank account.
  • Establish and use a reserve, and fund it from your sales or by debiting your bank account.
  • Suspend or terminate your ability to accept payments.
  • Manage disputes it sees as an unacceptable risk.
  • Refuse to act upon refund instructions.

So refunds and disputes during the hold come out of the balance first1Stripe, Unacceptable Risk Policy, last updated July 29, 2026, read November 2, 2026. It can reach zero before the review.

Example

You hold $40,000 on day 0. Over 120 days, $3,000 of refunds and $2,000 of disputes are paid from it. The review then looks at $35,000, not $40,000. Illustrative figures.

How to appeal

Through Stripe's own channel, with evidence. The notice says how and by when.

  1. Open the form in the closure email if you think Stripe misread your business. It takes you to the Dashboard to add information5Stripe Support, Why was my Stripe account closed?, read November 2, 2026.
  2. Answer in the Dashboard, where appeals "can typically be done"1Stripe, Unacceptable Risk Policy, last updated July 29, 2026, read November 2, 2026. Note any deadline in the notice.
  3. Send proof, not a request: company documents, product list and descriptions, checkout screenshots, refund and dispute rates by month, and what you changed.
  4. Wait for the email. Stripe notifies the outcome by email1Stripe, Unacceptable Risk Policy, last updated July 29, 2026, read November 2, 2026.
  5. Appeal again if the first fails. A user "may have the opportunity to make another appeal through the Dashboard"1Stripe, Unacceptable Risk Policy, last updated July 29, 2026, read November 2, 2026.

Get your customers' cards out

  2. Not sent: Link cards

Don't close the account yourself

Leave it open, even if Stripe has stopped your payments. Four reasons, all from Stripe:

Export your data to CSV before anything else, as Stripe recommends7Stripe Support, Close a Stripe account, read November 2, 2026.

MATCH and opening a new Stripe account

Most closures don't lead to MATCH. A listing follows terminations for reasons such as excessive chargebacks, fraud or identity misrepresentation, and it stays 5 years11Stripe Docs, Terminated merchant files (MATCH and VMSS), read October 27, 2026. Ask Stripe which reason applies to you. Every code: the MATCH list.

Don't open a new Stripe account under another name or entity for the same business. Same owners and products link the files, and misrepresenting identity is itself a MATCH reason11Stripe Docs, Terminated merchant files (MATCH and VMSS), read October 27, 2026. Splitting volume across accounts to stay under monitoring thresholds is not a fix either.

Tagada follows Visa and Mastercard rules and the laws that apply to payments.

How Tagada helps

More than one processor, before the next email

  • Routing across TagadaPay and processors such as Stripe, NMI and Airwallex with one logic, and cascade to another processor when one is down or times out, so one review doesn't stop every sale.
  • TagadaPay is reviewed per file: "Each file is still underwritten, with enhanced review on regulated verticals."
  • Clear refusals: falsified documents, counterfeits, chargeback circumvention, deceptive marketing around trials, subscriptions and cancellation, and MATCH-listed merchants.
  • Subscriptions with trials, billing cycles, retries and automatic recovery.
  • Live in 24h: "One KYC. One signed package." TagadaPay distributes it across its processor network and follows up, and most merchants are live in under 24 hours.
  • A vault you own: your PCI-tokenized cards, customer profiles and subscription data stay portable. Switch processors without re-onboarding customers. No vendor lock-in.
  • From 2.9% + $0.29, no setup fees, no monthly minimums. High-risk verticals and edge cases are priced case by case.

Frequently asked questions

Why did Stripe close my account without warning?

Stripe's agreement lets it close an account "at any time". Its terms list triggers such as excessive disputes, delayed delivery, or a business model changed without its consent. The email and the red Dashboard banner give the reason Stripe chose to share. Compare it with what changed in your ads, offers and products recently.

How long does Stripe hold funds after closing an account?

Under its Unacceptable Risk Policy, Stripe typically pauses payouts for 120 days from its first email, then runs a formal review. The review can release all or part of the balance, keep holding it, or cancel the payout. A reserve, if one applies, follows its own notice and can last longer.

Can I get my money back from Stripe?

Usually part or all of it, after the hold. The balance first pays refunds and disputes raised meanwhile, and Stripe may cancel the payout if it judges the risk continues. Keep the account open so you can answer disputes, and ask in writing for a statement of what was deducted.

Can I appeal a Stripe account closure?

Yes. Use the form in the closure email or the Dashboard, and send evidence and what you fixed. If the first appeal fails, Stripe says you may be able to appeal again through the Dashboard. The form is meant for businesses Stripe misread.

Can I open a new Stripe account after being banned?

Not to run the same business. A closed account can't be reopened, and a new account for the same owners and products is likely to be linked to the old one. Misrepresenting identity can also lead to a MATCH listing. Look for a processor that accepts your category instead.

What happens to my subscriptions when Stripe closes my account?

Renewals stop on Stripe. Request the card data export to a PCI DSS Level 1 processor on day one; Stripe doesn't send subscriptions, payment history or Link cards, so export plans and next charge dates yourself and rebuild them on the new system.
