Why Stripe Closed Your Online Pharmacy Account (and What to Do Next)
Why Stripe closes online pharmacy accounts, the 120-day payout pause, what to send in an appeal, how to export cards, and how to keep selling.
Article summary
TL;DR
Stripe accepts online pharmacies only after extra due diligence, in six regions, and can revoke approval at any time. Most closures come from an account never approved for pharmacy sales, a platform account, or rising disputes. Payouts are typically paused for 120 days. Appeal with your licenses and certification, export your cards, and move to a processor that underwrites pharmacies.
- Stripe lists "Online pharmacies, including SaaS platforms" and "Card-not-present prescription-only products and pharmaceuticals" as restricted (list updated September 22, 2026).
- Stripe approves pharmacies only in "the US, Canada, the EU, Australia, the UK, and Japan".
- On Express accounts, Stripe's FAQ answers "In general, no": "payments for prescription medication will need to occur outside of Stripe" (read November 2, 2026).
- Stripe "will typically restrict or pause payouts" for 120 days after an unacceptable-risk notice, then reviews the balance (policy of July 29, 2026).
- "Once a Stripe account is closed, it can't be reopened".

Why Stripe closes online pharmacy accounts
Pharmacies are restricted, not prohibited, at Stripe. Restricted means approval comes after a review, for a specific use, and can be withdrawn1Stripe, Restricted businesses, updated September 22, 2026.

|---|---|---|

| Approval withdrawn | Approval "may be modified or revoked by Stripe at any time"1Stripe, Restricted businesses, updated September 22, 2026 | A new product line or market outside the approved scope |

Stripe's agreement also lets it "close User's Stripe Account at any time"5Stripe Services Agreement, last modified September 28, 2026, section 10.1. The notice rarely names the cause. Compare it with what changed in the last months: new products, states, storefronts or offers.

Watch out
Refunds and disputes during the 120 days come out of the held balance4Stripe, Unacceptable Risk Policy, last updated July 29, 2026. Cancelled refills and declined prescriptions can drain it. Plan cash without it: payout timing for online pharmacies.

Appeal: what to send
A pharmacy appeal is about proof of legality. Send what an underwriter would ask for.
| Send | Why |
|---|---|
| Pharmacy licenses for the home state and each state you ship to | Shows you're licensed where you sell |
| LegitScript certification or NABP accreditation | The usual proof of legality for card networks9Mastercard Security Rules and Procedures, Merchant Edition, August 4, 2026, section 9.4.3 |
| Your prescription verification process, with screenshots | Shows no order ships without a valid prescription |
| Checkout and refill terms, with screenshots | Shows pricing, renewal and cancellation are clear |
| Disputes and refunds by month | Shows the risk is under control |
| What you changed since the notice | Shows the cause is fixed |
Stripe's policy describes an appeal through the Dashboard, and a second appeal may be possible4Stripe, Unacceptable Risk Policy, last updated July 29, 2026. If you sold through a platform's account, the platform is your first contact.

Don't do this
Don't open a new Stripe account
Don't open a new Stripe account for the same pharmacy under another name or entity. Same business, same review.
Don't relabel products
Don't relabel products to look like general retail. It misstates your category to the card networks9Mastercard Security Rules and Procedures, Merchant Edition, August 4, 2026, section 9.4.3.
Don't split volume
Don't split volume across accounts to stay under thresholds. Stripe lists evasion of chargeback monitoring among prohibited uses1Stripe, Restricted businesses, updated September 22, 2026.
Don't charge refills you can't ship
It turns into refunds and disputes against a frozen balance.
