Payout Timing for Online Pharmacies

When an online pharmacy gets paid: why the clock starts at capture, first-payout delays, reserves and risk holds, and how to plan cash.

Article summary

TL;DR

On Stripe, US payouts normally arrive 2 business days after a payment settles, and the first payout takes 7 to 14 days depending on industry and risk. For a pharmacy, the clock starts only when you capture, after the prescription is verified. Reserves, risk reviews and volume spikes can hold money longer. Plan cash for all of them.

  • Stripe US payouts: 2 business days; first payout "within 7–14 days, depending on your industry, country of operation, and risk level" (read November 2, 2026).
  • An online card authorization is usually valid 7 days on Stripe; nothing is paid out until you capture.
  • Stripe "will typically restrict or pause payouts" for 120 days when it acts on unacceptable risk (policy of July 29, 2026).
  • PayPal can hold funds "for up to 180 days" in some cases (User Agreement, September 14, 2026).
  • From day 31, a Tier 1 merchant's acquirer compares its daily volume and disputes with normal activity (Visa Core Rules, October 24, 2026).

When the payout clock starts

A pharmacy that verifies prescriptions before charging adds a step most stores don't have. Money moves only after capture.

  1. Authorization at checkout: the amount is held on the card, not paid to you2Stripe Docs, Place a hold on a payment method, read November 2, 2026.
  2. Prescription verification: the order waits; the hold lasts up to 7 days for most online card payments2Stripe Docs, Place a hold on a payment method, read November 2, 2026.
  3. Capture on approval: the sale is final.
  4. Settlement and payout: your processor's normal delay starts here, 2 business days on Stripe in the US1Stripe Docs, Payouts, read November 2, 2026.

Money moves only after capture.

An order authorized Monday, verified Wednesday and captured Wednesday reaches your bank around Friday on Stripe's standard US timing1Stripe Docs, Payouts, read November 2, 2026, not Wednesday. On refills billed on the day the pharmacy ships, the clock starts on ship day.

The clock starts at capture. Each hold adds its own wait.

Most holds are triggered by what the acquirer sees: a launch that multiplies volume overnight, rising disputes, or missing documents. Tell your processor before a launch, and answer verification requests the same day. Reserve terms in detail: online pharmacy processing fees and reserves.

Plan your cash

Example (hypothetical terms): you capture $80,000 a month with a 10% reserve held 90 days and 2-day payouts. At steady state, about $24,000 sits in reserve, plus two days of sales in transit. If a risk review pauses payouts, a full month of sales can wait with it.

  1. Keep a buffer

Keep a buffer that covers at least a month of pharmacy costs and ad spend.

  2. Don't pay wholesalers from expected payouts

Don't pay wholesalers from expected payouts during the first months.

  3. Capture fast

A verified order left uncaptured is cash you don't have, and a hold that expires is a sale you lose2Stripe Docs, Place a hold on a payment method, read November 2, 2026.

  4. Watch disputes

The operating side, refills and retention: subscriptions and churn for online pharmacies.

Frequently asked questions

How long do payouts take for an online pharmacy?

On Stripe in the US, 2 business days after the payment is captured, and 7 to 14 days for the first payout depending on industry, country and risk. Other processors set their own delays in the contract. Ask for it in writing.

Why is my pharmacy payout on hold?

Usually a first-payout delay, a reserve, or a risk review. Stripe "will typically restrict or pause payouts" for 120 days when it acts on unacceptable risk; PayPal can hold funds for up to 180 days. Answer the processor's request with exactly what it asks for.

Does authorizing a card before prescription approval delay my payout?

Yes. An authorization only holds the amount; the payout delay starts at capture. If verification takes 2 days, your money arrives 2 days later. Capture as soon as the order is approved, within the hold window.

Can I get faster payouts?

Build a clean history first: low disputes, steady volume, complete documents. Stripe notes risk criteria can keep an account off the default timing. After a few clean months, ask for a reserve review and a shorter delay.
