Why Stripe Closed Your Info Product Business Account (and What to Do Next)
Why Stripe closes online course and coaching accounts, what happens to your balance, how to export your students' cards and keep selling.
Article summary
TL;DR
Stripe doesn't ban online courses or coaching. It usually closes an account over the offer: income promises, testimonials, pressure upsells, hidden memberships, or disputes. For unacceptable risk, payouts are typically paused for 120 days. Read the notice, appeal if Stripe misread your business, request the card export within 30 days, and move to a processor that reviews your offer first.
- Stripe's lists don't name courses or coaching; they prohibit "get rich quick" schemes, "deceptive testimonials" and "high-pressure upselling" (read November 2, 2026).
- Stripe "will typically restrict or pause payouts to the User's bank account for 120 days" when it acts for unacceptable risk (policy updated July 29, 2026).
- If the terms end for reasons other than your breach, you can ask in writing, "within 30 days after the termination date", for your card data to go to another PCI DSS Level 1 processor.
- Stripe "doesn't export your account's payment history, subscriptions, or other objects": only cards, emails and metadata.
- Visa and Mastercard flag US merchants at 1.5% disputes in 2026, and Stripe watches well before that.

Why Stripe closes info product accounts
Stripe sends the reason by email, and your Dashboard shows "a red banner at the top" with details2Stripe Support, "Why was my Stripe account closed?", read November 2, 2026. For courses and coaching, the reason usually maps to one of these.

What each message means
- Action required: the reason is in the email and in the red banner of your Dashboard.
- Export requested: cards go to a PCI DSS Level 1 processor; subscriptions and history are yours to export.
- Appeal received: if it fails, a second appeal is possible.

Watch out
Stripe can close an account even when nothing on this list applies: "Stripe may terminate this Agreement or close User's Stripe Account at any time"6Stripe Services Agreement, modified September 28, 2026.
What to do in the first 48 hours
- Read the email and the Dashboard banner. Note the exact reason and the date: the 30-day export window and the payout timeline both count from there2Stripe Support, "Why was my Stripe account closed?", read November 2, 20263Stripe, Unacceptable risk policy, updated July 29, 20264Stripe Services Agreement, Stripe Payments Terms, section 7.2, modified September 28, 2026.
- Export what Stripe won't send: customers, subscriptions, payment plans in progress and payment history, from the Dashboard or API, while you still have access5Stripe Docs, Request a payment data export, read November 2, 2026.
- List students mid-plan and active members, with amounts and next charge dates.
- Pause ads and launches that would send new buyers to a checkout that can't charge them.
- Answer every open refund request. Refunds and disputes during the hold come out of your balance3Stripe, Unacceptable risk policy, updated July 29, 2026.
- Line up another processor before you appeal; don't wait for the answer.
In this order: the card export and the next processor take the longest.

Your money: what happens to the balance
Stripe's unacceptable risk policy is the rule that applies to most closures3Stripe, Unacceptable risk policy, updated July 29, 2026.
| When | What happens |
|---|---|
| From the first email | Payouts "typically" restricted or paused3Stripe, Unacceptable risk policy, updated July 29, 2026 |
| During the pause | The balance covers refunds, disputes and chargebacks3Stripe, Unacceptable risk policy, updated July 29, 2026 |
| Day 120 | Formal review: release all or part, keep holding, or cancel the payout3Stripe, Unacceptable risk policy, updated July 29, 2026 |
| After the decision | Appeal through the Dashboard; a second appeal is possible3Stripe, Unacceptable risk policy, updated July 29, 2026 |
Separately, "a reserve may be required indefinitely to support a business on Stripe"7Stripe Support, Reserves FAQ, read October 2026. Plan cash for 4 months without that balance. More on timing: payout timing for info product businesses.
Your students: cards, subscriptions and payment plans
Cards can move; subscriptions don't. Stripe says it will "securely transfer your credit card data" to a new processor, but "only … to another PCI DSS Level 1-compliant payment processor", which must provide its attestation of compliance and an encryption key5Stripe Docs, Request a payment data export, read November 2, 2026. Contractually, if the terms end for reasons other than your breach, the written request must come "within 30 days after the termination date"4Stripe Services Agreement, Stripe Payments Terms, section 7.2, modified September 28, 2026.

What it means for an info product business:
- Members need their subscriptions rebuilt on the new processor, with the same price and next charge date.
- Students mid-plan need their remaining installments rebuilt, under the agreement they signed. Email them before the next charge so it isn't a surprise.
- Buyers whose card can't move (Link, or a closure for breach) get a link to enter their card again.
- MembersTheir cards, not their subscriptions.Rebuild each subscription with the same price and next charge date.
- Students mid-planTheir cards, not the remaining installments.Rebuild the installments under the signed agreement; email before the next charge.
- Cards saved through Link, or a closure for breachNo card moves.Send a link to enter the card again.
Example
You sold a $1,497 program in 3 payments, and 40 students still owe their third payment. Stripe sends their cards to your new processor; you recreate 40 one-time charges on the original dates, and email each student a week ahead with the amount and date.
Moving the base cleanly: switching payment processor for info product businesses without losing cards.
Appeal or move on?
Stripe offers another review "if you believe that we've misunderstood or miscategorized your business", through the form in the closure email2Stripe Support, "Why was my Stripe account closed?", read November 2, 2026.
| Situation | Appeal? | What to send |
|---|---|---|
| Stripe thinks you sell "get rich quick", but you teach a skill | Yes | Curriculum, sales page, refund policy, proof that results are presented as variable |
| Closure after a dispute spike from one launch | Maybe | Dispute causes, what you changed, refund records |
| Income claims, fake reviews or hidden memberships on your pages | NoFix the offer first | Appealing unchanged pages wastes the time you need to move |
| NoReason given beyond "risk" | YesBriefly | Business description, delivery records, refund policy |
What not to do
Don't open a new Stripe account
Under another name or entity. Stripe can link it, and it reads as evasion.
Don't change how you describe the business
To fit a category. Visa can exclude a merchant that "acts with the intent to circumvent Visa programs"8Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026, table 11-118 (p. 779 to 780) and rule 10.4.5.4 (p. 641).
Don't split sales across several accounts
To stay under dispute limits.
Don't keep billing
Members whose card you can't charge legitimately; ask them to re-enter it.
Before you sell again
The next processor will review the same pages Stripe did.
- [ ] Sales page and ads without income promises; testimonials with the generally expected result
- [ ] Refund and cancellation policy accepted with a checkbox before payment
- [ ] Membership and payment-plan terms shown separately at checkout
- [ ] Access logs kept for every buyer (logins, IP, lessons, calls)
- [ ] Dispute ratio tracked weekly, by offer
