Switching Payment Processor for Info Product Businesses Without Losing Cards
How course and coaching sellers move saved cards, memberships and payment plans to a new processor: what moves, what doesn't, steps and timing.
Article summary
TL;DR
Check who holds your cards. In your own Stripe account, Stripe can send an encrypted export to a PCI DSS Level 1 processor; in a course platform's payments, ask the platform. Memberships and payment plans don't move by themselves: rebuild them with the same dates and installments, run both processors for a cycle, and keep the old account for disputes.
- Stripe sends card data only to "another PCI DSS Level 1-compliant payment processor", without payment history or subscriptions (read November 2, 2026).
- Kajabi migrates Stripe subscriptions into Kajabi Payments without card re-entry, but skips paused, past-due and PayPal subscriptions.
- On a payment plan, Kajabi carries over only the remaining installments: "1 of 2" paid becomes 1 left.
- One course platform warns that subscriptions on a proprietary gateway "cannot be transferred via automated tokens" (November 2026).
- Cardholders can generally dispute for up to 120 days at Stripe: keep the old account open.

This guide is part of our hub on info product payment processing. The general guide, for any business: how to switch payment processors.
First question: who holds your cards?
Course sellers often switch platform and processor at the same time. What you can move depends on where the cards were saved.
| Your setup | What you can do |
|---|---|
| Your own Stripe account, connected to the course platform | Ask Stripe for a card export to the new processor1Stripe Docs, Request a payment data export, read November 2, 2026; or keep Stripe and just change the platform |
| Moving into a platform's built-in payments (example: Kajabi Payments) | Platform migration tool, with its exclusions2Kajabi Help Center, Migrate Stripe subscriptions & payment plans to Kajabi Payments, read November 2, 2026 |
| Leaving a platform's built-in payments | Ask the platform whether it exports cards. Without an export, members re-subscribe on your new checkout3Ruzuku, Course platform migration checklist, updated November 2026 (course platform) |
| PayPal subscriptions | Not migrable to Kajabi Payments2Kajabi Help Center, Migrate Stripe subscriptions & payment plans to Kajabi Payments, read November 2, 2026; plan on re-subscription |

Why course sellers switch: an account closed or under review, reserves, platform fees, or a processor that won't support a new offer. Stripe doesn't name courses or coaching in its restricted list; what it prohibits is the promise, such as "get rich quick" schemes8Stripe, Restricted and prohibited businesses, read November 2, 2026. If Stripe closed your account: why Stripe closed your info product business account.
What moves and what doesn't
Fig. 2Old processor to new: what goes, what you rebuild, what stays
Goes with the card export
Card numbers and expiry dates, emails and metadata, from Stripe, in an encrypted file.
You rebuild
Memberships, plans and next charge dates; payment history from the dashboard or API; course access mapped between platforms.
Stays with you or the old processor
Cards saved with Link; payment-plan agreements and consent records; disputes on past sales.
Cards travel. Plans, counts and agreements don't.
Payment plans and memberships in flight
A student halfway through a 6-installment plan is the hardest case. The card moves; the plan, the count and the agreement don't.
- Recreate only what's left. Kajabi's tool does the same: remaining installments only2Kajabi Help Center, Migrate Stripe subscriptions & payment plans to Kajabi Payments, read November 2, 2026.
- Keep the original agreement. Visa requires express consent to an agreement with the total price, schedule, cancellation and refund policy before storing the card for installments4Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026: tables 5-19, 5-20 and 5-21, section 1.7.2.1, tables 7-2 and 11-93. It's your proof if a student disputes a later installment.
- Keep the same dates and amounts. A changed date or amount is a new term, and a new reason to dispute.
- Don't restart trials on memberships you move.
- Flag the charges correctly on the new processor: installment or recurring indicator4Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026: tables 5-19, 5-20 and 5-21, section 1.7.2.1, tables 7-2 and 11-93.
California also requires keeping proof of renewal consent for 3 years on contracts since July 1, 20259California Business and Professions Code § 17602.
The switch, step by step
- Open and test the new account. It runs its own review of your offers and sales pages.
- Request the card export, naming the new processor. Stripe asks for its PCI attestation and a PGP key of 4,096 bits or more1Stripe Docs, Request a payment data export, read November 2, 2026.
- Export plans yourself: member, price, cycle, next charge date, installments left, discount, status.
- Map students between the card export, your plan list and course accounts, by customer ID and email.
- Rebuild memberships and plans with the same dates and prices.
- Rewire access: the new processor's payment events must grant, pause and restore course access. Test with a failed payment before go-live.
- Run both in parallel for one full billing cycle6Shuttle Global, How to switch payment providers without losing customers, read October 27, 2026: new buyers on the new processor, existing ones moving as cards land.
- Watch failures for 30 days after cutover6Shuttle Global, How to switch payment providers without losing customers, read October 27, 2026.
- Keep the old account open for refunds and disputes on past sales7Stripe Docs, How disputes work, read October 14, 2026.
In this order: the card export and the parallel run take the longest.
How long it takes
| Stage | Typical time |
|---|---|
| New account review | Days to weeks, depending on the processor |
| Card export and import | 3 to 4 weeks at least, per one PSP (Razorpay)5Razorpay, Payment processing migration checklist, read October 27, 2026 |
| Parallel run | One full billing cycle6Shuttle Global, How to switch payment providers without losing customers, read October 27, 2026 |
| Old account open for disputes | Up to 120 days at Stripe, generally7Stripe Docs, How disputes work, read October 14, 2026 |

Watch out
A long coaching program can be disputed months after the sale. Visa's "not received" window runs 120 days from the date the service was expected, up to 540 days4Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026: tables 5-19, 5-20 and 5-21, section 1.7.2.1, tables 7-2 and 11-93. Keep access to the old account's dispute tools for as long as programs sold there are running.
Students, descriptor and retries
- Descriptor. A new name on the statement creates "I don't recognize this" disputes. Keep your brand name.
- Tell students before the next charge if the statement name or date changes.
- Retries. Installments that fail during the move follow Visa's limits: never after a category 1 code, up to 20 attempts in 30 days otherwise4Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026: tables 5-19, 5-20 and 5-21, section 1.7.2.1, tables 7-2 and 11-93. Don't retry the same installment on both processors.
- One charge, one processor. Mark migrated plans on the old system so nothing charges twice.
Tagada follows Visa and Mastercard rules and the laws that apply to payments.
Better than a switch: a second processor
A switch moves all your risk from one processor to another. A second processor behind the same checkout lets you shift new sales when one slows down, without a migration. Plan it while things are calm:
- Know where your cards live and whether more than one processor can use them.
- Keep your own records of plans, dates, prices and consent.
- Keep disputes low on both accounts: chargeback alerts for info product businesses.

If one processor is down or times out, the next takes the payment. A bank decline stays a decline.
