Reducing Payment Declines for Info Product Businesses

Why course and coaching payments get declined at checkout, on installments and renewals, how to read the code, and the Visa retry limits for 2026.

Article summary

TL;DR

Course and coaching payments fail at three moments: the first checkout (high prices, foreign cards), installments and renewals. Read the decline code: Visa forbids retrying lost, stolen or closed cards and allows up to 20 attempts in 30 days for the rest. On high-ticket declines, offer a payment plan or another method; never alter data to force a retry.

  • Visa's October 24, 2026 rules: category 1 codes (lost, stolen, closed, invalid, stop payment) must never be retried on that card.
  • Other declines allow "up to 20 attempts in 30 days"; Stripe recommends at most 8 retries per charge.
  • Teachable retries failed subscription and payment-plan charges "up to 8 times over a two-week period", then cancels and removes access.
  • On a payment plan, if the first authorization fails, Visa says "the Merchant must not store the credential".

Read the decline code

Visa sorts every decline code into four categories, and the category decides whether you may retry1Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026: section 1.7.2.1, section 7.3.6.3, table 7-2 and tables 5-20 and 5-21.

High-ticket declines

Retry rules

Visa caps retries: never after category 1, up to 20 attempts in 30 days for categories 2 to 41Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026: section 1.7.2.1, section 7.3.6.3, table 7-2 and tables 5-20 and 5-21. Stripe recommends no more than 8 retries per charge, because issuers can read extra retries as fraud2Stripe Docs, Declines and Card declines, read November 2, 2026.

Watch out

Visa forbids manipulating "any data elements from the original Authorization Request" on a retry, including the MCC, merchant country and ecommerce indicator1Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026: section 1.7.2.1, section 7.3.6.3, table 7-2 and tables 5-20 and 5-21. Changing the acquirer is forbidden too: a card the issuer declined is not resubmitted through a second processor.

Tagada follows Visa and Mastercard rules and the laws that apply to payments.

Payment plans and memberships: failed installments

  1. Flag the series correctly. Visa requires the installment or recurring indicator on each charge1Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026: section 1.7.2.1, section 7.3.6.3, table 7-2 and tables 5-20 and 5-21.
  2. Don't save a card that failed the first time. If the initial authorization fails, Visa says "the Merchant must not store the credential"1Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026: section 1.7.2.1, section 7.3.6.3, table 7-2 and tables 5-20 and 5-21.
  3. Read the code before each retry; stop on stop-payment codes (R0, R1, R3)1Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026: section 1.7.2.1, section 7.3.6.3, table 7-2 and tables 5-20 and 5-21.
  4. Ask for a new card by email and SMS, with a link to update it.
  5. Pause access, don't delete it. Restore it as soon as the payment goes through. Put the rule in the agreement the buyer accepts at checkout.
  6. Close the plan after your last retry, and send the balance due in writing.

Visa's categories decide whether a retry is allowed; the rest is your recovery flow.

Declines you cause

Some failures never reach the bank. When a processor blocks a payment, "it doesn't obtain authorization from the card issuer"2Stripe Docs, Declines and Card declines, read November 2, 2026. Three settings cause most of them:

  • Fraud rules set too tight for buyers coming from ads.
  • Missing data, such as a ZIP code, that fails as invalid.
  • Excessive retries after a card-testing attack, which look like a new attack: fraud prevention for info product businesses.

Frequently asked questions

Why was my customer's card declined on my course checkout?

The issuer refused it, not your platform. Common reasons are funds, a card limit on a large purchase, wrong details, a fraud flag or a blocked international transaction. Read the code: it tells you whether to retry, fix the data or ask for another card.

What does "do not honor" mean on a course payment?

It's code 05, a generic decline: the issuer refused without a reason. Visa puts it in category 4, so a retry is allowed within 20 attempts in 30 days. Ask the buyer to call their bank, then retry once or suggest another card.

How many times can I retry a failed payment-plan installment?

Never after a category 1 code such as lost, stolen, closed or stop payment. For other codes, Visa allows up to 20 attempts in 30 days; Stripe recommends at most 8 per charge. Space them out and ask for a new card.

Should I cut course access when a payment fails?

Pause it after your retries fail, and restore it when the payment clears. Teachable cancels the subscription and removes access once all retries fail. Whatever you choose, write the rule into the agreement the buyer accepts at checkout.

Can a backup processor approve a card the first one declined?

Not if the issuer declined it. Visa forbids changing the acquirer, the MCC or the merchant country to resubmit a transaction the issuer refused. A backup processor helps when the first one is down or times out; a bank decline is retried on the same processor, within Visa's limits, or the buyer uses another card.
