Failed Payment Recovery for Info Product Businesses

Recover failed membership renewals and missed course installments: retry timing, Visa retry limits, messages, access rules, backup processors.

Article summary

TL;DR

A failed membership renewal can cost you a member; a missed payment-plan installment is money owed on a course already delivered. For both, read the decline code, retry soft declines within 10 days and Visa's limits, send a one-click card update link, keep access during retries, and switch to a backup processor when yours is down.

  • "Twenty-five percent of lapsed subscriptions are purely due to payment failures," according to Stripe (January 2024).
  • "90% of recovered transactions occur within the first 10 days of a failed payment" (Recurly, April 2026).
  • Visa allows "up to 20 attempts in 30 days" on retryable declines, and category 1 declines must never be retried (Visa rules, October 24, 2026).
  • On a Visa installment plan, a late fee "must be a flat fee", and no interest may be charged (October 2026 rules).
  • With PayPal, Paid Memberships Pro sets the subscription to cancel after the first failure, with no retries.

Watch out

Retrying a hard decline every day does not recover it. It adds fees and can draw your processor's attention to your account.

When a payment-plan student stops paying

A missed installment is a debt, not a cancellation. Handle it in the order your terms set out.

  1. Retry and remind, as above, for 10 days.
  2. Offer a revised schedule: the same total, spread differently, agreed in writing.
  3. Apply your access rule: limit or suspend new modules until the plan is current, if your terms say so.
  4. Charge a late fee only if agreed: Visa requires it to be a flat fee, with no interest4Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026: tables 5-19, 5-20, 5-21 and 11-7.
  5. Keep the evidence: the plan agreement, the schedule, the access logs. If the student disputes earlier installments, these are your defense4Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026: tables 5-19, 5-20, 5-21 and 11-7.
  6. Ask a lawyer before going further. Plans of more than 4 installments or with finance charges can bring you under credit rules7CFPB, Regulation Z, 12 CFR 1026.2(a)(17), read November 2, 2026, and state lending and collection laws apply.

A missed installment is a debt, not a cancellation: follow the order your terms set out.

Example

A student on a 3 × $499 plan misses the second payment. Day 0: card update email. Day 3 and day 7: retries. Day 10: offer to split the remaining $998 into 3 payments. New modules unlock again once the plan is current.

Fig. 3A missed installment, as the student sees it

What each message does

  1. Day 0: card update email; retries follow on day 3 and day 7.
  2. Day 10: the same total, spread differently, agreed in writing.
  3. Once the plan is current: new modules unlock again.

Access during recovery

Cutting access on day 0 punishes students whose card simply expired. Keep access during the retries, say so in the message, and decide what happens after.

  • Membership: access to the end of the paid period, then pause or cancel.
  • Payment plan: keep what's paid for; hold new modules or live calls until the plan is current.
  • Message: "Your access stays open until [date]. Update your card to keep it."

How to automate it with your course platform: cutting access when a payment fails.

Frequently asked questions

How many times should I retry a failed membership payment?

Spread a few retries over the first 10 days, when Recurly sees 90% of recoveries, and never more than 20 in 30 days on Visa cards. Don't retry hard declines such as a closed account or a stolen card: ask the member for a new card instead.

Should I cut access when a payment fails?

Not right away. Most failures are expired cards or low balances that a retry or a card update fixes. Keep access during the retries, tell the member the date it will stop, and apply the rule in your terms once retries run out.

What do I do when a payment-plan student stops paying?

Retry and remind for about 10 days, then offer a revised schedule for the same total. If your terms allow it, hold new modules until the plan is current. A late fee must be flat and agreed in advance. Before using collectors, ask a lawyer.

Can I charge a late fee on a course payment plan?

On Visa cards, only a flat fee applied as a late payment penalty, with no interest, and only if it was in the plan agreement the buyer accepted. Plans with finance charges can also make you a creditor under Regulation Z.

Why did PayPal cancel my member after one failed payment?

Some membership tools set PayPal subscriptions to cancel at the first failure. Paid Memberships Pro, for example, sends `MAXFAILEDPAYMENTS=1`, so PayPal cancels with no retries. Check this setting, and ask the member to rejoin with a new payment method.
