Subscriptions and Churn for Info Product Businesses: When to Sell on Subscription and How to Keep Subscribers
When to sell a course, coaching or community on subscription, what churn to expect, why members cancel, and a cancel flow that saves without trapping.
Article summary
TL;DR
Sell on subscription only what keeps delivering value: community, new content, live coaching. A course with a defined result sells once or on a payment plan. On Kajabi, the typical subscription lasts three payments, so keep members with an early first result, one offer per cancel reason, failed-payment recovery and an easy cancel.
- "The typical subscription on our platform survives three payments"; 29.6% end after the first payment (Kajabi, August 2026).
- Recurly's "Education" category: 4.99% total annual churn (median), of which 1.69 points are involuntary, about a third (July 2026 data).
- "Twenty-five percent of lapsed subscriptions are purely due to payment failures" (Stripe, January 2024).
- ROSCA requires "simple mechanisms" to stop recurring charges; California requires online cancellation for contracts since July 1, 2025.
- Amazon agreed to a $1 billion penalty and $1.5 billion in refunds over Prime enrollment and cancellation (FTC, September 2025).

When to sell an info product on subscription
Match the billing to how the value arrives. If the buyer gets it all at once, a subscription invites them to cancel once they have it.
| Offer | Value arrives | Best billing | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Recorded course with a clear result | Up front | One-time or payment plan | Nothing new next month |
| Cohort program (8 to 12 weeks) | Over a fixed period | One-time or payment plan | Fixed end date |
| Community | Every week | Subscription | Members come back for people |
| Content library with new releases | Every month | Subscription | New material each cycle |
| Group coaching | Every week | Subscription | Live access is the product |
| Course plus ongoing support | Both | Hybrid: course once, membership after | Schoolmaker's advice against selling the course itself on subscription8Schoolmaker, Why you should stop selling courses as subscriptions, December 29, 2024, updated September 10, 2026 |

When members leave
Churn is not spread evenly. It piles up at a few moments.
- After the first payment: nearly 3 in 10 subscriptions on Kajabi never renew1Kajabi, Are membership sites profitable? The math behind the 3-payment problem, August 5, 2026. The first week decides it: login, first lesson, first live call.
- After the third payment: the typical subscription ends here1Kajabi, Are membership sites profitable? The math behind the 3-payment problem, August 5, 2026. Members who joined for one problem have solved it, or given up.
- At an annual renewal: a charge members forgot about. Send a reminder; California requires one each year5California Business and Professions Code § 17602, contracts from July 1, 2025.
- When a card fails: the member didn't choose to leave. Stripe puts it at a quarter of lapsed subscriptions3Stripe, How we built it: Smart Retries, January 23, 2024.

Why they cancel, and what to answer
Ask the reason in one click at cancellation, then show one offer that fits it.
| Reason given | What to offer |
|---|---|
| "No time right now" | A pause of 1 to 3 months |
| "Too expensive" | A lower tier, or the annual plan at its saving |
| "I got what I needed" | The next level, or a lighter plan |
| "I'm not getting results" | A call or a short onboarding path; no promise of outcomes |
| "Too much content" | A guided path, fewer emails |
| "Payment problem" | A card update link, not a cancel flow |
"No time right now"
A pause of 1 to 3 months.
"Too expensive"
A lower tier, or the annual plan at its saving.
"I got what I needed"
The next level, or a lighter plan.
"I'm not getting results"
A call or a short onboarding path; no promise of outcomes.
"Too much content"
A guided path, fewer emails.
"Payment problem"
A card update link, not a cancel flow.
Example
A member of a $49 design community clicks Cancel and picks "No time right now". The next screen offers: "Pause for 2 months, free. Your projects stay saved." One button to pause, one to finish canceling.
A cancel flow that saves without trapping
A save offer is fine. A maze is not. The rules are clear on that.
| Rule | What it requires |
|---|---|
| ROSCA | "Simple mechanisms for a consumer to stop recurring charges"4Restore Online Shoppers' Confidence Act, 15 U.S.C. § 8403 |
| California | Online cancellation for contracts made online, an annual reminder5California Business and Professions Code § 17602, contracts from July 1, 2025 |
| FTC enforcement | Amazon: $1 billion penalty and $1.5 billion in refunds, including over cancellation practices (September 2025)6FTC, FTC Secures Historic $2.5 Billion Settlement Against Amazon, September 25, 2025 |
| FTC "click-to-cancel" rule | Vacated on July 8, 2025; the original rule text reinstated on February 12, 2026; a new consultation opened March 13, 2026, with no new rule since7Federal Register, Negative Option Rule, 91 FR 6507 (February 12, 2026) and 91 FR 12318 (March 13, 2026) |
| Visa 13.5 defense | Proof the buyer "expressly agreed to future Transactions" and was notified "at least 7 days before"9Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026, tables 11-118 and 11-122 |
Keep it to one reason screen, one offer, and a clear "Cancel my membership" button. Confirm the cancellation by email, with the date access ends.
