How to Sell Info Products and Online Courses on Subscription

How to sell a course membership, community or monthly coaching on subscription: what processors accept, Visa, Mastercard and ROSCA rules.

Article summary

TL;DR

Processors accept course memberships, communities and monthly coaching on subscription when the terms are clear. Before the card field, show the price, billing interval and how to cancel. Get express consent, confirm after sign-up, warn at least 7 days before a trial or intro price ends, and allow online cancellation. A fixed payment plan follows its own rules.

  • ROSCA requires material terms before billing details, express informed consent and "simple mechanisms" to stop charges.
  • Visa requires a notice at least 7 days before a trial or introductory offer ends, and online cancellation for online sign-ups (Visa rules, October 24, 2026).
  • A merchant plan payable "in more than four installments" can make you a creditor under Regulation Z, if you do it more than 25 times a year.
  • Through Stripe, Affirm lists educational services (MCC 8299) as "Restricted" and consulting as "Prohibited" (read November 2, 2026).
  • Failed payments cause 25% of lost subscriptions, according to Stripe (January 2024).

Which info products fit a subscription

A subscription works when you deliver something new every month. A finished course doesn't.

What you sellBilling model that fitsWhy
Course library or membership with new lessonsMonthly or annual subscriptionOngoing access to content that grows
Paid community, mastermindMonthly or annual subscriptionThe value is ongoing access
Monthly coaching (calls, reviews)Monthly subscriptionA service delivered each month
Fixed program (12-week cohort, one course)One payment, or a fixed payment planThe content ends; billing should too
Ebook, template packOne paymentDelivered once

Selling a fixed course as an endless subscription is where disputes start: members stop using it, forget the charge and call their bank.

Will your processor accept it?

Yes, for clear offers. Stripe doesn't prohibit memberships. It prohibits "Negative option marketing, negative option membership clubs and reduced price trials with unclear or hidden pricing"6Stripe, Prohibited and restricted businesses, read November 2, 2026.

Subscription or payment plan?

Both bill a card more than once, but the law sees them differently.

A plan of 4 payments or fewer, without interest, stays outside the Regulation Z definition712 CFR 1026.2(a)(17), Regulation Z, read November 2, 2026. Longer plans need a lawyer's review, and state lending and collection laws can add rules.

Third-party installments (BNPL). Through Stripe, Affirm classes MCC 8299 Educational Services as "Restricted" and 7392 Consulting as "Prohibited"8Stripe Docs, Affirm payments, read November 2, 2026. Check eligibility before you build a launch around it.

Example

A $1,497 program sold as 3 monthly payments of $499. The checkout states the total, the 3 dates, the refund policy and the card's last 4 digits, and the buyer ticks a separate box to agree. No interest, no late fee beyond a flat amount. That meets Visa's installment rules2Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026, tables 5-19 and 5-20 (p. 467 to 471).

When a payment fails: cutting access

No Visa rule we found forbids pausing access when a payment fails. What protects you is the agreement: say in the terms the buyer accepts what happens to access after a failed payment, and when.

  1. Retry the payment on a schedule before you act.
  2. Email the member with a link to update the card.
  3. Pause access after the grace period stated in your terms.
  4. Restore access automatically once the payment goes through.

Say each step, and its timing, in the terms the buyer accepts.

One in four lost subscriptions comes from a failed payment, not a decision to leave9Stripe, failed payments and lost subscriptions, January 23, 2024. Recovery flows: failed payment recovery for info product businesses.

Selling to EU buyers

An EU buyer can withdraw within 14 days. For a membership with instant access, that right ends once access begins "with the consumer's prior express consent and his acknowledgment that he thereby loses his right of withdrawal" (article 16 m)10Directive 2011/83/EU on consumer rights, article 16 (m), original text.

Add that consent box to the EU checkout. Directive 2019/2161 amended article 16 in 2022: check the current text with your lawyer.

Checkout wording

Example

"Membership: free for 14 days, then $49 a month. Nothing is charged today. First charge on March 15, then on the 15th of each month; we'll email you 7 days before your first charge. Cancel anytime online in your account."

  2. A separate checkbox

Frequently asked questions

Should I sell my course as a subscription or a one-time payment?

Match billing to delivery. A finished course fits one payment or a fixed plan. A library that grows, a community or monthly coaching fits a subscription. Billing a fixed course monthly with no end leads to forgotten charges and disputes, and the full ROSCA rules apply.

Can I offer a payment plan for my online course?

Yes. Under Visa rules, it's an installment transaction: agree on the total, schedule, cancellation and refund policy before storing the card, with no interest. Beyond 4 installments by written agreement, done more than 25 times a year, Regulation Z may treat you as a creditor.

Do I need to remind members before a membership renews?

Visa requires a notice at least 7 days before a trial or introductory price ends. Mastercard asks for a notice 3 to 7 days before billing on cycles of 6 months or less. California requires an annual reminder for automatic renewals.

Can I cut access when a student stops paying?

We found no Visa rule against it. State in your terms what happens to access after a failed payment, retry the card, warn the member, then pause access after the stated grace period. Restore access once the payment succeeds.

Can I offer a free trial on a course membership?

Yes, if the terms are clear. Show the trial length and the price after it before payment, and send a notice at least 7 days before the trial ends with an online way to cancel. Stripe prohibits trials "with unclear or hidden pricing".
