Subscription Billing for Info Product Businesses

How to set up recurring billing for memberships, coaching retainers and payment plans: plan vs. subscription, renewal notices, statuses and access.

Article summary

TL;DR

Info product businesses bill on repeat in two ways. A subscription (membership, monthly coaching) renews until the buyer cancels. A payment plan splits one purchase into a fixed number of charges and stops. Each needs its own terms at checkout, renewal notices, retries on failed charges, a self-service portal, and a clear rule for access at every status.

  • Visa defines an installment transaction as one of a series for "a single purchase of goods or services", over a fixed period; recurring and installment charges each carry their own indicator (October 2026 rules).
  • ROSCA applies to renewing subscriptions: clear terms before billing, express consent, a simple way to stop.
  • "Twenty-five percent of lapsed subscriptions are purely due to payment failures," according to Stripe (January 2024).
  • Visa's defense on a 13.5 dispute needs a notice of future charges "at least 7 days before" the charge.
  • On Ruzuku, a payment-plan student keeps access permanently after the last payment; a subscriber keeps it to the end of the billing period (May 2026).

Subscription or payment plan?

The two look alike in a billing tool. They are not the same for the card networks, the law or the buyer.

Watch out

A payment plan set up as a cancellable subscription lets the buyer stop paying with one click and keep the course. A subscription set up as a plan stops renewing after N months. Pick the billing type that matches what you sold.

Map each status to access

Most billing tools track a subscription through a few statuses. Decide in advance what the student sees at each one, and write it in your terms.

Ruzuku, for example, retries failed payments, then cancels: "If the payment ultimately fails after all retries, the student's subscription or payment plan is canceled"3Ruzuku Help, Set up subscription pricing and payment plans, updated May 29, 2026. Automating access with your course platform: cutting access when a payment fails.

Failed renewals and self-service

Failed payments are the quietest way to lose members. Stripe reports that a quarter of lapsed subscriptions are "purely due to payment failures"5Stripe, How we built it: Smart Retries, January 23, 2024.

Fig. 3Four moves that keep a failed renewal from becoming churn

  1. Retry soft declines

Over a few days, not all at once.

  2. Ask for a new card

By email with a one-click update link.

  3. Let members fix things themselves

Update the card, pause, skip, switch to annual, cancel.

  4. Offer a retention option before cancel

A pause or a lower tier often keeps the member.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a payment plan and a subscription for a course?

A payment plan splits one purchase into a fixed number of payments, then stops; the student keeps the course. A subscription pays for ongoing access and renews until canceled; access ends with billing. Visa treats them as different transaction types, and US negative option rules apply to the subscription.

What happens to access when a subscriber cancels?

Usually access continues to the end of the period already paid, then stops. That's how Ruzuku handles it, and it avoids refund requests for unused days. Say it in your terms at checkout and in the cancellation confirmation.

What happens when a subscription payment fails?

The subscription moves to past due and the billing tool retries over several days. Email the member with a card-update link and keep access during the retries. If every retry fails, the subscription is canceled and access ends; give the member a simple way to come back.

Do I need to remind members before a renewal?

For annual renewals, yes: California requires an annual reminder, and Visa's dispute defense needs proof you notified the buyer at least 7 days before a future charge. A reminder also cuts "I forgot I subscribed" disputes on monthly plans.

Can I bill coaching clients monthly with a minimum term?

Yes, if the minimum is stated before payment and accepted. Show the monthly price, the number of months, what happens if the client stops early, and how to cancel after the minimum. Without that, an early-cancel charge is hard to defend in a dispute.
