Memberships for Info Product Businesses: Content, Community and VIP Tiers

Content, community, coaching and VIP memberships for course creators: how long members stay, monthly vs. annual, billing rules and access control.

Article summary

TL;DR

Course creators run four kinds of membership: a content library, a paid community, group coaching, and a VIP tier on top of one of these. The model matters less than retention: on Kajabi, the typical subscription lasts three payments. As a recurring charge, it also needs clear terms, express consent, easy cancellation, and access that stops with billing.

  • "The typical subscription on our platform survives three payments," and 29.6% end after one payment (Kajabi platform data, August 2026).
  • ROSCA requires clear terms before billing details, express informed consent and a simple way to stop the charges.
  • Stripe prohibits "negative option membership clubs and reduced price trials with unclear or hidden pricing".
  • In California, automatic renewals need express consent, online cancellation and an annual reminder (contracts since July 1, 2025).
  • Visa's merchant defense on a 13.5 dispute needs proof of consent to future charges and a notice "at least 7 days before" (October 2026 rules).

Many creators combine models: a course sold once, then a membership as the next step. Schoolmaker argues for this hybrid rather than selling the course itself as a subscription (updated September 2026)11Schoolmaker, Why you should stop selling courses as subscriptions, December 29, 2024, updated September 10, 2026. The membership is often the one-click upsell after the course.

How long members stay

Kajabi published the most detailed membership data available in 2026, from its own platform1Kajabi, Are membership sites profitable? The math behind the 3-payment problem, August 5, 2026. It is vendor data, but it comes with a method.

The point for planning: model a membership on three payments, not twelve. What happens in the first 90 days, the onboarding, the first win, the first live call, decides whether the membership works.

Example

A $47 monthly membership that keeps the typical member for 3 payments brings $141 per member, the figure Kajabi itself uses1Kajabi, Are membership sites profitable? The math behind the 3-payment problem, August 5, 2026. Compare that with the price of your course before you replace one with the other.

Whatever you pick, show the renewal date and amount at checkout and in the receipt. An annual renewal nobody remembered is the classic membership dispute.

The billing rules

A membership with automatic renewal is a negative option: silence means the buyer keeps paying. That is the most regulated way to sell online.

Access: when it starts and when it stops

A membership is two systems that must agree: billing and access. If they drift apart, members either lose access they paid for or keep access they stopped paying for.

  1. Payment succeeds: grant access right away and send the login.
  2. Renewal fails: keep access during the retry period, tell the member, and ask them to update the card.
  3. Retries run out or the member cancels: remove access at the end of the paid period, not on the day they click cancel.
  4. Member comes back: restore access and their progress.

Billing and access must agree at every step.

Write this in your terms, inside the agreement the buyer accepts at checkout. How to automate it: cutting access when a payment fails. Recovering the failed renewals: failed payment recovery for info product businesses.

Frequently asked questions

Should I sell a course or a membership?

Sell a course when the result has a clear end. Add a membership when students need ongoing content, community or coaching after it. Kajabi's data shows the typical subscription lasts three payments, so compare three months of membership revenue with your course price before switching models.

How much should I charge for a membership?

Kajabi observes price bands of $27 to $67, $97 to $197 and $297 to $497 for memberships, with business topics priced higher than hobby topics. Price on what members get each month, especially live access, and offer an annual plan beside the monthly one.

Monthly or annual membership?

Offer both. Monthly lowers the barrier; annual keeps members through quiet months. Show the annual saving clearly, send a reminder before each annual renewal (required in California), and make cancellation as easy as signing up.

Can I remove access when a member stops paying?

Yes, if your terms say so. Keep access during the retry period after a failed renewal, then remove it at the end of the paid period. Put the rule in the agreement the buyer accepts at checkout, and restore access when they pay again.

Is a membership a negative option?

Yes, when it renews automatically. ROSCA requires clear terms before billing details, express consent and a simple cancellation, and Stripe prohibits membership clubs with unclear or hidden pricing. A fixed-term pass with no renewal is not a negative option.
