Chargeback Alerts for Info Product Businesses

How Ethoca, Verifi RDR and Order Insight keep course and coaching disputes out of your ratio, which rules fit each offer, and what alerts cost.

Article summary

TL;DR

Chargeback alerts warn you that a buyer is disputing a payment before it becomes a chargeback, so you can refund or answer first. Verifi (Visa) runs RDR and Order Insight; Ethoca (Mastercard) runs Ethoca Alerts and Consumer Clarity. Resolved alerts stay out of your dispute rate. For courses, logins, IP and account data let Visa block some disputes outright.

  • Stripe: disputes resolved through RDR or Ethoca Alerts "don't count towards your overall dispute rates" (read November 2, 2026).
  • Visa's VAMP excludes disputes resolved through a pre-dispute solution; the US "Excessive" threshold is 1.5% since April 1, 2026.
  • Visa's 13.5 Misrepresentation dispute names "Business opportunities in which the Merchant suggests that an income will be generated" (rules of October 24, 2026).
  • One alert vendor lists $15 per RDR or CDRN alert and $29 per Ethoca alert in the US (July 24, 2026); Whop charges $29 per RDR alert.
  • Kajabi charges $15 per dispute, "not refunded even if the dispute is eventually resolved in your favor".

Why course and coaching disputes are different

An online course has no tracking number. When a buyer disputes, your delivery proof is the access log, and the dispute often turns on what your sales page promised.

Long programs stretch the dispute window. For 13.1, Visa counts 120 days from the date the buyer expected the service, up to 540 days after the sale4Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026: tables 11-93 (13.1), 11-118 (13.5) and 11-7 (Compelling Evidence, digital goods). A 12-month coaching program can produce disputes long after checkout.

Alerts don't erase fraud reports. Issuers must report possible fraud on a captured payment, refunded or not, and VAMP counts those reports with disputes3Stripe Docs, Dispute and fraud card monitoring programs, read November 2, 2026. A refund after an alert closes the dispute, not the fraud report. Stopping card testing and stolen cards before capture is a separate job: fraud prevention and 3D Secure for info product businesses.

Tagada follows Visa and Mastercard rules and the laws that apply to payments.

Order Insight and CE 3.0: access is your delivery proof

Order Insight sends the issuer your order details when the cardholder asks: product description, amounts, email, IP address, account ID, cancellation terms1Stripe Docs, How dispute prevention works, read November 2, 2026. Stripe says you "direct Stripe to share this data with issuers and ultimately with cardholders"1Stripe Docs, How dispute prevention works, read November 2, 2026.

With CE 3.0, if at least two earlier payments from the same cardholder have complete product descriptions, matching IP addresses and at least one matching email or address, the issuer must block a "10.4 Other Fraud, Card Absent" dispute1Stripe Docs, How dispute prevention works, read November 2, 2026. It's never filed.

For an info product, that works well because buyers come back: a second course, a membership month, a payment-plan installment. Make every payment carry:

  1. A clear product description

"8-week copywriting course, lifetime access", not "Product 1".

  2. The buyer's IP address and email

On every charge, including renewals and installments.

  3. An account ID the buyer recognizes

  4. A short cancellation and refund summary

Watch out

CE 3.0 only blocks fraud claims. A buyer who says the course didn't match the sales page files a 13.5, and no access log fixes a misleading promise4Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026: tables 11-93 (13.1), 11-118 (13.5) and 11-7 (Compelling Evidence, digital goods).

For a representment after the alert stage, Visa's evidence rules for digital goods ask for the delivery date and two or more items such as IP address, device ID, the buyer's profile and access to your site on or after the purchase date4Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026: tables 11-93 (13.1), 11-118 (13.5) and 11-7 (Compelling Evidence, digital goods).

Prices vary by reseller and processor. CDRN and Ethoca can both fire on the same payment: deduplicate by order so you don't pay twice. And every resolved alert is also a refund.

Kajabi's own advice at the earliest stage: after an Early Fraud Warning, "we recommend revoking access to the content that was purchased"7Kajabi Help Center, What is a payment dispute, updated September 28, 2026. A refunded buyer who keeps access is a buyer who can come back for a second dispute.

Set up in order

  1. Fix the causes: remove income claims from the sales page, show the refund policy before payment, remind members before renewal. See trial offers for info product businesses.
  2. Log access: logins, lessons opened, IP and device, with dates. This is your delivery proof4Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026: tables 11-93 (13.1), 11-118 (13.5) and 11-7 (Compelling Evidence, digital goods).
  3. Clean your payment data: clear product names, IP and email on every charge, a descriptor buyers recognize.
  4. Turn on Order Insight and Consumer Clarity so banks see the order first.
  5. Add RDR with narrow rules for low prices and membership renewals.
  6. Add Ethoca Alerts for Mastercard.
  7. Revoke access on refund, automatically, so a refunded buyer can't dispute again.
  8. Review monthly: alerts by offer, funnel step and reason.

Prevention first, then alerts from the narrowest rules to the widest.

Cutting access when a payment fails or is refunded, on the CRM side: failed payment recovery for info product businesses.

Frequently asked questions

Do chargeback alerts lower my chargeback ratio?

Yes, when the dispute is resolved at the alert stage. Stripe says disputes resolved through RDR or Ethoca Alerts don't count towards dispute rates, and Visa's VAMP excludes disputes resolved through a pre-dispute solution. Fraud reports from issuers still count, refunded or not.

Are chargeback alerts worth it for online courses?

Usually, once you sell memberships, payment plans or higher prices. Each alert costs a fee, $15 to $29 at one vendor, plus the refund. For a low-price ebook, an RDR rule that refunds small disputes can be cheaper than fighting. Fix your sales page and refund policy first.

Should I refund or fight a course chargeback?

Refund at the alert stage when the amount is small, the buyer barely used the course, or the complaint is about the promise. Fight when you have dated access logs, IP and account data, and clear terms. Visa's digital goods evidence rules list exactly what counts.

Can I revoke course access after a dispute or refund?

Yes, and platforms recommend it. Kajabi advises revoking access to purchased content after an Early Fraud Warning. Put the rule in your terms: access ends when a payment is refunded or reversed. Then automate it, so no refunded buyer keeps the course.

What's the difference between Ethoca and Verifi?

Ethoca is a Mastercard solution, Verifi a Visa one. Verifi offers RDR, CDRN alerts and Order Insight. Ethoca offers Ethoca Alerts and Consumer Clarity. Most course and coaching businesses need both networks covered.
