Fitness Product Payment Processing
Which processors accept fitness equipment and sports nutrition, the ingredients and disputes that close accounts, and how to build a stable setup.
Article summary
TL;DR
Fitness equipment is not named on Stripe's, Shopify Payments', PayPal's or Square's restricted lists, so most equipment brands can start on a mainstream processor. Sports nutrition is judged like any supplement: safety and claims. A few ingredients, like DMAA, close every door. For heavy equipment, the real risk is delivery disputes.
- Stripe's restricted list contains no line on "fitness", "gym" or "exercise" (read November 2, 2026).
- Visa files exercise equipment under MCC 5941, sporting goods stores, a code outside its high-risk list (April 2026).
- Since April 1, 2026, Visa flags a US merchant at a 1.5% fraud and dispute ratio.
- For a "not received" dispute, Visa accepts delivery proof only with the full delivery address (rules of October 24, 2026).
- The FDA says DMAA products sold as supplements "are illegal".
On this page
This page is the hub for fitness payments. The general guide, for any business: high-risk merchant accounts. The store side is in our guide to the best ecommerce platform for fitness brands.
Watch out
This guide is for brands that sell fitness products online: equipment, accessories, sports nutrition, programs. Gyms and studios bill memberships under another code (MCC 7997) and face other rules: see MCC 7997.
Is a fitness brand high risk?
It depends on what you sell. "Fitness" covers three businesses that processors read very differently.
| What you sell | How processors see it | Where the risk comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Home gym equipment and accessories | Retail, MCC 59415Visa, Merchant Data Standards Manual, April 2026 (MCC 5941) | Shipping delays, damage, "not received" and "not as described" disputes6Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026, conditions 13.1 and 13.3 |
| Sports nutrition (protein, pre-workout) | Same lines as supplements1Stripe, Prohibited and restricted businesses, read November 2, 20262Shopify Help Center, Shopify Payments eligibility, read November 2, 2026 | Ingredients, health claims, auto-ship offers |
| Workout programs | Digital goods, often recurring | Cancellations and refund requests |
Most equipment sellers are low risk by category. A pre-workout brand on auto-ship with a trial offer sits at the high end, for the same reasons as a supplement brand.

What Stripe, Shopify Payments, PayPal and Square say
None of the four names fitness equipment. Sports nutrition falls under their supplement or consumer-safety lines.
Stripe also prohibits "outrageous claims", "deceptive testimonials" and "high-pressure upselling"1Stripe, Prohibited and restricted businesses, read November 2, 2026, which is how many supplement funnels get closed.

Watch out
Acceptance at sign-up is not approval. Stripe "may terminate this Agreement or close User's Stripe Account at any time"12Stripe Services Agreement, last modified September 28, 2026, and PayPal can hold funds "for up to 180 days"13PayPal User Agreement, updated September 14, 2026.

Ingredients that close every door
Some sports-performance ingredients make the product illegal in the US. No processor, ad network or marketplace will carry it.
| Substance | FDA position |
|---|---|
| DMAA | "DMAA-containing products marketed as dietary supplements are illegal and their marketing violates the law" (FDA)9FDA, DMAA in Products Marketed as Dietary Supplements, content current as of February 22, 2023 |
| DMHA | Supplements containing it are "adulterated under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act" (FDA)10FDA, DMHA in Dietary Supplements, content current as of March 6, 2023 |
| SARMs | "unapproved new drugs", even when labeled "Research-grade compound" (FDA warning letter, December 12, 2025)11FDA, Warning letter to Titan SARMS LLC, December 12, 2025 |
Stripe separately prohibits "Incorrectly labelled research chemicals" and "substances designed to mimic illegal drugs"1Stripe, Prohibited and restricted businesses, read November 2, 2026. The full legal picture: is it legal to sell fitness products online?
Where fitness disputes come from
For equipment brands, most disputes are about delivery and condition, not fraud. Two Visa reason codes matter most.
| Visa condition | What the customer claims | What wins it for you |
|---|---|---|
| 13.1 Merchandise not received | The goods never arrived6Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026, conditions 13.1 and 13.3 | "proof of delivery that contains the full delivery address (tracking with partial address is not permitted)"6Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026, conditions 13.1 and 13.3 |
| 13.3 Not as described or defective | The item was "damaged or defective" or differs from the listing6Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026, conditions 13.1 and 13.3 | A return policy with clear instructions; the customer must return or try to return the item6Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026, conditions 13.1 and 13.3 |
Visa does not let a customer use 13.1 if they cancelled before the expected delivery date6Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026, conditions 13.1 and 13.3. A late delivery still counts, if the customer returns or tries to return the goods6Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026, conditions 13.1 and 13.3.
Example
You ship a 200 lb rack by freight with tracking that shows only the city. The customer files "not received." Without the full delivery address on your proof, Visa's rules say you cannot use that tracking as your defense6Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026, conditions 13.1 and 13.3.

Subscriptions and trial offers
Refills of protein or pre-workout and monthly programs are subscriptions. Card networks and federal law set the billing rules.
| Rule | What it requires |
|---|---|
| Federal law | Clear terms before billing details, express consent, a simple way to stop (ROSCA)17Restore Online Shoppers' Confidence Act, 15 U.S.C. § 8403 |
| Visa | Notice at least 7 days before a trial or introductory price ends (Visa)15Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of April 18, 2026, table 5-21 |
| Mastercard | For physical products, the trial starts when the customer receives the product, as relayed by J.P. Morgan in 2019 (J.P. Morgan)16J.P. Morgan, Mastercard Announces Revised Standards for Free Trial Merchants, 2019 |
| Stripe | Prohibits "reduced price trials with unclear or hidden pricing" (Stripe)1Stripe, Prohibited and restricted businesses, read November 2, 2026 |
The Mastercard point matters for equipment: a 30-day home trial of a rower runs from delivery, not from the order. Details: how to sell fitness products on subscription and trial offers.
Your three setups
| Setup | How it works | Fits | Weakness |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aggregator (Stripe, Shopify Payments, PayPal) | Instant sign-up, review later | Equipment and accessories, one-time sales | Closure or holds without warning12Stripe Services Agreement, last modified September 28, 202613PayPal User Agreement, updated September 14, 2026 |
| Dedicated merchant account | A bank underwrites you before you process | Sports nutrition on subscription, high volume | Paperwork; one account is still a single point of failure |
| Several processors, one checkout | Two or more accounts with routing rules | Brands where payments can't stop | More applications to maintain |
Fig. 3Several processors behind one fitness checkout
An outage or a closure moves the volume instead of stopping it. A bank decline stays a decline.
On Shopify, a third-party processor adds 2% (Basic), 1% (Grow), 0.6% (Advanced) or 0.2% (Plus) per order14Shopify pricing, third-party payment provider fees, read October 9, 2026. Routing in practice: payment routing for fitness brands.
Fig. 4Shopify's fee on orders paid through a third-party processor
Watch out
A second account is a continuity plan. Splitting volume to stay under a network threshold is evasion, which card networks penalize.

How Tagada helps
One application, several processors, one fitness checkout
TagadaPay is built for brands that mainstream processors review late: "Automated onboarding, every industry welcome, and a vault you actually own." "If you sell something real, we will get you paid."
- One application: "One KYC. One signed package. We distribute it across our processor network and follow up so you don't have to." Each file gets "Enhanced review for regulated verticals."
- Routing: "Route to the processor most likely to approve it, retry on decline. No engineering required." TagadaPay reports a "+18% approval uplift."
- A vault you own: "Switch processors without re-onboarding customers. No vendor lock-in. Ever."
- Fraud control: "Native 3DS2, device intelligence, and rules engine: approve real customers, block the rest."
- Plugs into your store: "Already on Shopify, WooCommerce, ClickFunnels or BigCommerce? Drop TagadaPay in."
Pricing starts "From 2.9% + $0.29", and "High-risk verticals and edge cases are priced case by case." Apply on TagadaPay: most merchants are live in under 24 hours, according to TagadaPay.
