Payment Methods for Fitness Brands
Which payment methods fit a fitness brand: financing and BNPL for equipment, cards and wallets for refills, PayPal and ACH, and each provider's rules.
Article summary
TL;DR
A fitness brand needs two payment mixes. For equipment, add financing or buy now, pay later: brands like Peloton sell machines on 12 to 36-month plans. For sports nutrition refills, cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay do most of the work, with PayPal if its policy fits. Each method is approved by its own provider, and BNPL providers restrict nutraceuticals.
- 9% of US shoppers who abandoned a checkout cite not enough payment methods (Baymard, September 2025).
- Peloton offers Affirm financing over 12, 24 or 36 months at 0% or 4.99% APR, "subject to credit check and approval" (read November 2, 2026).
- Afterpay prohibits "testosterone boosters or sexual enhancement products" and restricts "pseudo medicals, pseudo pharmaceuticals and/or nutriceuticals" (updated July 15, 2026).
- PayPal bans "narcotics, steroids, certain controlled substances or other products that present a risk to consumer safety".
- Nacha watches ACH unauthorized returns at 0.5%.

Methods by what you sell
Your catalog sets your mix. Polar Analytics' closest categories show the gap: a $138.48 median order in "Sports & Outdoor" against $66 in "Health & Wellness" (August 2026)11Polar Analytics, Ecommerce benchmarks, last update August 25, 2026 (median of 4,000+ Shopify brands). A home gym sits far above both.

Financing and BNPL for equipment
Machines are where financing pays off. Stripe suggests BNPL to reduce declines for insufficient funds8Stripe Docs, Card declines, read November 2, 2026, and the big equipment brands all offer some form of monthly payment.

Two things to plan for:

The provider underwrites you.
A BNPL button in your processor's dashboard doesn't mean the provider approved your products. Ask first.
Returns on financed orders.
A home trial return must also cancel or refund the plan. Spell out how in your trial terms: trial offers for fitness brands.
Watch out
BNPL is open to equipment but harder for sports nutrition. Afterpay restricts "nutriceuticals" and prohibits "testosterone boosters"4Afterpay/Clearpay Merchant Services Agreement (via Stripe), updated July 15, 2026; Klarna "may in sole discretion decide" what it won't support5Klarna Docs, Prohibited and restricted businesses, read October 26, 2026. Show BNPL on equipment pages only if the provider hasn't approved your nutrition line.
Cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay
Cards are the base, and wallets ride on them: Apple Pay and Google Pay pass a card through your card processor, so your processor's approval is what counts. Wallet payments can carry cryptograms that shift liability in some cases, like 3D Secure9Stripe Docs, Authenticate with 3D Secure, read November 2, 2026.
For low-ticket nutrition orders on mobile, a one-tap wallet button saves the customer from typing a card number. The checkout side: express checkout for fitness brands.

PayPal
PayPal is a separate account with its own policy. Its Acceptable Use Policy bans "narcotics, steroids, certain controlled substances or other products that present a risk to consumer safety"6PayPal Acceptable Use Policy, updated October 29, 2022. Equipment isn't named; sports nutrition is judged on that last clause.
PayPal can also hold a reserve: rolling, minimum or jumpstart. It reviews reserves "within every 180 days" and warns "you might never be able to fully remove a reserve"7PayPal, The why and what of account reserves, read October 27, 2026. Read the policy against your products before you build on it. More: do PayPal and Square allow fitness products?.
ACH for refills
Bank debit costs less than cards and suits recurring refills. It has its own rule book: Nacha monitors unauthorized returns at 0.5%, administrative returns at 3% and overall returns at 15%10Nacha, ACH Network Risk and Enforcement Topics, read October 14, 2026.
