International Payments for Fitness Brands

Selling fitness equipment or sports nutrition abroad: what foreign cards cost, why they're declined, currency and SCA rules, what changes by product.

Article summary

TL;DR

Selling abroad by card costs more and gets declined more: foreign cards carry higher interchange and cross-border fees, and foreign issuers approve less readily. Heavy equipment is limited more by freight than by payments; sports nutrition depends on each country's rules and on processors' country lists. Charge in local currency, add local methods, expect 3D Secure in Europe.

  • For an EEA merchant, Visa interchange on an online consumer credit card is 0.30% for a card from the EEA and 1.50% for a card from outside (Visa Europe tables).
  • In one 2026 acquirer schedule, a Visa cross-border sale adds 0.678% in the merchant's currency and 1.13% in another currency.
  • Stripe's country lists name "Ephedrine" and "HCG weight loss" for Mexico and "Vitamins" for Thailand (read November 2, 2026).
  • In the euro area, cards made 48% of online payments in 2024 and e-payment solutions 29% (ECB).
  • Visa's VAMP threshold is 1.5% in the US, Canada, the EU and Asia Pacific, and 2.2% in CEMEA.

What your product changes abroad

Payments rules are the same for every product. What changes is whether you can sell and ship it in the first place.

For sports nutrition, check the destination before you open checkout to it. Stripe keeps country-specific lists on top of its global one: Mexico lists "Ephedrine" and "HCG weight loss", Thailand lists "Vitamins"1Stripe, Prohibited and restricted businesses, country-specific lists, read November 2, 2026. A product legal in the US can be refused for one country.

What foreign cards cost

Why foreign cards are declined more

A foreign issuer "might not be familiar" with your acquirer, may not recognize the data in the request, and "errs on the side of caution" because of cross-border fraud, as Adyen explains5Adyen, "Cross-border payments: go global, process local", February 3, 2020. Stripe adds that cards issued in another country than your account's "might see an increased rate of declines"6Stripe Docs, Card declines, read November 2, 2026.

Local acquiring and the rules

Local acquiring turns a foreign sale into a domestic one, with lower fees and better approvals. But it requires a real presence. Visa says an acquirer "must accept Transactions only from a Merchant Outlet within the Acquirer's Country of Domicile", unless Visa approves otherwise7Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of April 18, 2026, sections 1.5.1.2, 1.7.2.1 and 5.8.9.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sell protein powder or pre-workout internationally?

Often, but country by country. Ingredient, labeling and import rules differ by destination, and processors keep country lists: Stripe lists "Vitamins" as prohibited for Thailand and "Ephedrine" for Mexico. Check the destination's rules and your processor's list before opening checkout to that country.

Why are international cards declined on my fitness store?

Foreign issuers know less about your acquirer and are cautious about cross-border fraud. Stripe notes higher decline rates for cards issued outside your account's country. Full billing data, 3D Secure where required, a clear descriptor and local payment methods help.

Should I charge customers in their own currency?

Usually yes, so their bank doesn't convert at its own rate. If you offer conversion at checkout instead, Visa requires it to be optional and never preselected, and in the EU the margin must be shown first.

Do I need a merchant account in each country?

Not to accept foreign cards: one account can take them as cross-border sales. Local acquiring, which makes them domestic, requires a genuine local outlet in the acquirer's country, under Visa's rules. Most fitness brands start cross-border and add local acquiring in their biggest markets.

Is it worth shipping fitness equipment abroad?

That's mostly a freight and returns question, not a payments one. Oversize parcels, return logistics and after-sales service cost more across borders. On the payment side, expect higher fees and more issuer declines on large foreign tickets.
