Reducing Payment Declines for Fitness Brands
Why big equipment orders and protein refills get declined, what each Visa code allows, how many retries are permitted, and how to recover payments.
Article summary
TL;DR
Fitness brands lose payments in two places: big equipment orders that issuers flag as unusual, and protein or pre-workout refills charged to cards that changed. Read the decline code first: Visa forbids retrying lost, stolen or closed cards and caps other retries at 20 in 30 days. Then fix the cause: authentication, another payment method, or a customer update.
- 10% of US shoppers who abandoned a checkout did so because their "credit card was declined" (Baymard, September 2025).
- Stripe: issuers may decline on suspected fraud, which "can be triggered by large purchases or a large volume of transactions over a short period of time" (read November 2, 2026).
- Visa category 1 codes (lost, stolen, closed, invalid) must never be retried on the same card; categories 2 to 4 allow up to 20 attempts in 30 days (Visa rules, October 24, 2026).
- Stripe recommends at most eight retries per charge, since issuers "might see creating additional retries as potential fraud".
- Polar Analytics puts the median order at $138.48 in "Sports & Outdoor", against $66 in "Health & Wellness" (August 2026).

Where fitness payments fail
A fitness catalog mixes very different tickets. Polar Analytics has no fitness category, but its closest ones show the spread: a $138.48 median order in "Sports & Outdoor" and $66 in "Health & Wellness"5Polar Analytics, Ecommerce benchmarks, last update August 25, 2026 (median of 4,000+ Shopify brands). A home gym setup sits far above both.
| Moment | Typical decline | Usual cause | First fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| First order, big equipment | Generic (05), suspected fraud (59), limit (61) | Purchase far above the customer's habits, or credit limit | Clear message, 3DS, financing option |
| Accessory orders in bursts | Many declines in minutes | Card testing, not real buyers | Block rules, velocity limits |
| Protein or pre-workout refill | Expired card (54), funds (51), stop payment (R0, R1, R3) | Card replaced, low balance, customer cancelled at the bank | Card update request, spaced retries, stop billing |
| Foreign customer | Generic, "not permitted" | Card issued abroad, issuer restrictions2Stripe Docs, Card declines, read November 2, 2026 | Local methods, see international payments |
Big-ticket equipment: the "unusual purchase" decline
A $1,800 treadmill on a card that usually buys groceries looks like fraud to the issuer. Stripe lists large purchases among the triggers of fraud declines, and only the customer can clear it with the bank2Stripe Docs, Card declines, read November 2, 2026.
What helps at checkout:
- Say what to do. "Your bank declined this payment. Approve it in your banking app or call the number on your card, then try again." A vague "payment failed" loses the order.
- Ask for CVC and postal code: Stripe says collecting them helps avoid fraud declines2Stripe Docs, Card declines, read November 2, 2026.
- Run 3D Secure on big first orders. Stripe notes it "can lower decline rates in countries that support it"2Stripe Docs, Card declines, read November 2, 2026. More on when: fraud prevention and 3D Secure for fitness brands.
- Offer installments. For insufficient funds, Stripe suggests adding a buy now, pay later option2Stripe Docs, Card declines, read November 2, 2026. On equipment, it also fits the customer's budget. See payment methods for fitness brands.
- Offer a second card or a wallet right on the failed screen, without emptying the cart.
Example
A customer's first attempt at a $2,400 rack bundle returns "do not honor". The page tells them to confirm the purchase with their bank and keeps the cart. They approve it in their banking app and the second attempt goes through. Without the message, most would leave.

Read the code before you retry
Visa's table 7-2 sorts every decline code into four categories. The category tells you whether the same card can ever pass1Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026, section 1.7.2.1 (pp. 131 to 132), section 7.3.6.3 and table 7-2 (pp. 547 to 549).
Stripe also returns an advice code: do_not_try_again, try_again_later or confirm_card_data2Stripe Docs, Card declines, read November 2, 2026. Mastercard sends its own Merchant Advice Codes2Stripe Docs, Card declines, read November 2, 2026. The full code list: hard decline vs soft decline.

do_not_try_again
Stop. Ask for another card; on a refill, stop billing.
try_again_later
Retry later, within the cap.
confirm_card_data
Get corrected data, then retry.
Retry rules
Retries recover payments, until they don't. Two limits apply.
- Visa: never after category 1; "up to 20 attempts in 30 days" for categories 2 to 41Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026, section 1.7.2.1 (pp. 131 to 132), section 7.3.6.3 and table 7-2 (pp. 547 to 549).
- Stripe: a maximum of eight retries per charge, because more can raise declines on legitimate charges2Stripe Docs, Card declines, read November 2, 2026.

Watch out
A retry must not change the data of the original request. Visa says a merchant that reattempts after a decline "must not intentionally manipulate any data elements", including the MCC, the merchant country and the acquiring identifier1Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026, section 1.7.2.1 (pp. 131 to 132), section 7.3.6.3 and table 7-2 (pp. 547 to 549). So a payment the bank declined can't be sent to another processor: that changes the acquiring identifier. Cascade to another processor only when one is down or times out.

Refills that fail
A failed protein refill is usually a customer you still have. The customer isn't there to retry, so the work is yours2Stripe Docs, Card declines, read November 2, 2026.
- Read the code. Stop payment (R0, R1, R3) means the customer cancelled at the bank: stop billing1Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026, section 1.7.2.1 (pp. 131 to 132), section 7.3.6.3 and table 7-2 (pp. 547 to 549).
- Expired or replaced card: ask the customer to update it, with a direct link.
- Funds or generic: retry later, spaced over several days, within Visa's cap1Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules, edition of October 24, 2026, section 1.7.2.1 (pp. 131 to 132), section 7.3.6.3 and table 7-2 (pp. 547 to 549).
- Notify the customer by email or text to come back and pay, as Stripe advises for off-session declines2Stripe Docs, Card declines, read November 2, 2026.
- Pause, don't cancel, while recovery runs.
Visa's categories decide whether a retry is allowed; the rest is your recovery flow.

Declines you cause
Not every failed payment reaches the bank. When a processor blocks a payment, it "doesn't obtain authorization from the card issuer"3Stripe Docs, Declines, read November 2, 2026. A rule built for card testing on accessories can also stop a real customer buying a rack.
- Check the outcome type: blocked, invalid or issuer declined3Stripe Docs, Declines, read November 2, 2026.
- Set rules by product family, with higher review thresholds for equipment than for accessories.
- Measure approvals on unique payments, excluding repeat attempts on the same card2Stripe Docs, Card declines, read November 2, 2026.
