How to Start a Fitness Brand Online

Start a fitness brand selling equipment or sports nutrition: the product rules, policies and payment setup to settle before your first sale.

Article summary

TL;DR

Pick your product line first, because it sets your rules. Equipment brands need shipping times, delivery proof, a return policy and product-safety reporting. Sports nutrition brands need compliant labels, legal ingredients and claims they can prove. Then choose a processor that accepts that product, and keep a second one ready before you scale.

  • Stripe's restricted list doesn't name fitness equipment; sports nutrition is judged on safety and claims (read November 2, 2026).
  • Food and supplement facilities must renew their FDA registration between October 1 and December 31, 2026, at no fee.
  • The CPSC fined Peloton $19,065,000 in January 2023 for not reporting a treadmill hazard immediately.
  • Without a stated ship time, the FTC expects you to ship within 30 days.
  • Some processors exclude whole categories: Payments AI refuses "Weight-loss, fat burners, appetite suppressants" (February 2026).

Choose your product line, then your rules

Each line brings its own regulator, its own processor questions and its own dispute risk.

Starting with one line keeps your first application simple. Adding pre-workout to an equipment store later can trigger a new review.

Fig. 1Four product lines, four sets of rules

  1. Home gym equipment

Regulator: CPSC (safety), FTC (warranties, shipping). Processors look at ticket size and delivery times. Main dispute risk: "not received", "damaged or defective".

  2. Accessories

Regulator: FTC. Processors look at little at launch. Main dispute risk: low.

  3. Sports nutrition

Regulator: FDA, FTC. Processors look at ingredients, claims, auto-ship. Main dispute risk: subscriptions, "not as described".

  4. Workout programs

Regulator: FTC. Processors look at recurring billing and refunds. Main dispute risk: cancellations.

Start with one line: the first application stays simple.

CPSC, FTC, FDA and Stripe; Visa Core Rules, October 24, 2026, conditions 13.1 and 13.3.

The launch checklist

  1. Form the company and get an EIN. Processors match your legal name to your site and bank.
  2. Register for sales tax in the states where you must collect it.
  3. Settle the product rules for your line (next section).
  4. Publish your policies: shipping times, returns with clear instructions, warranty, contact.
  5. Choose a processor that accepts your product, with an honest description of what you sell.
  6. Plan a second processor before you scale ads or launch subscriptions.

Payments come at step 5, once everything they check is in place.

Steps 5 and 6 in detail: how to get a fitness product merchant account approved.

Starting from zero history: merchant accounts for new fitness brands. Each provider's position: Stripe and Shopify.

What closes new fitness brands' accounts

Most early closures come from a few predictable causes.

Tagada follows Visa and Mastercard rules and the laws that apply to payments.

If it happens: why Stripe closed your fitness brand account.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need a license to sell supplements in the US?

The FDA "does not approve dietary supplements or their labeling" before sale. The facility that makes them must be registered with the FDA and renew every even year, this time between October 1 and December 31, 2026. Your state may require a seller's permit for sales tax.

Can I start a fitness equipment store on Stripe or Shopify Payments?

Usually yes: neither names fitness equipment in its restricted lists. Prepare for disputes from day one: full-address delivery proof, clear return instructions and stated shipping times.

Should I sell equipment and supplements in the same store?

You can, but you take on both rule sets: CPSC and warranties for equipment, FDA labels and claims for nutrition. Processors also review the riskiest product in your catalog. Many brands launch one line, build history, then add the other.

Do I need insurance to sell fitness products?

Insurance isn't part of the payment, FDA or FTC rules on this page. Product liability coverage is still worth pricing before launch, for ingested products and heavy equipment alike, and you should check what your contract manufacturer already carries.

What's the biggest payment risk for a new fitness brand?

For equipment, delivery disputes on high tickets. For sports nutrition, claims and trial offers that a processor reads as deceptive. In both cases, a single processor is a single point of failure: plan a second one before you scale.
