Does Stripe Allow Fitness Products?
Stripe doesn't name fitness. Equipment passes, sports nutrition is judged on safety and claims, and Afterpay restricts gym equipment. The exact lines.
Article summary
Allowed, with conditionsTL;DR
Mostly, yes. Stripe's list of prohibited and restricted businesses doesn't mention fitness, gyms or exercise equipment. Sports nutrition falls under the supplement line: prohibited only if "not safe" or making "harmful claims". One exception catches equipment sellers: Stripe's Afterpay/Clearpay terms restrict "fitness and/or gym equipment".
- No line on Stripe's list names "fitness", "gym", "exercise" or "steroid" (English list read November 2, 2026).
- Sports nutrition is prohibited only when it's "not safe or make[s] harmful claims".
- "Fitness and/or gym equipment" is restricted for Afterpay/Clearpay and needs additional underwriting (terms updated July 15, 2026).
- Stripe "may terminate this Agreement or close User's Stripe Account at any time" (agreement modified September 28, 2026).
- For unacceptable risk, Stripe "typically" pauses payouts for 120 days from its first email.

What Stripe's policy says about fitness
Fitness isn't a category at Stripe. What applies depends on which of the three fitness families you sell.
| What you sell | Stripe line that can apply (exact wording) | List |
|---|---|---|
| Home gym equipment, accessories | None names it | Neither |
| Workout programs, digital content | None names it; the trial and upsell lines below apply to how you sell | Neither |
| Sports nutrition (protein, pre-workout) | "Pseudo-pharmaceuticals or nutraceuticals that are not safe or make harmful claims" | Prohibited |
| Products sold as "research" compounds | "Incorrectly labelled research chemicals" | Prohibited |
| Stimulant or drug-like products | "Illegal drugs, substances designed to mimic illegal drugs, including kava" | Prohibited |
| Any offer | "Negative option marketing, negative option membership clubs and reduced price trials with unclear or hidden pricing" | Prohibited |
| Any marketing | "Businesses that make outrageous claims, use deceptive testimonials, use high-pressure upselling or use fake testimonials" | Prohibited |

Pseudo-pharmaceuticals or nutraceuticals that are not safe or make harmful claims
Stripe also says the list is not exhaustive1Stripe, Prohibited and restricted businesses, English version, read November 2, 2026. Country lists add a few lines: "Ephedrine" and "HCG weight loss" in Mexico, "Vitamins" in Thailand1Stripe, Prohibited and restricted businesses, English version, read November 2, 2026.
Watch out
Third-party guides disagree. Some call supplements "restricted", others "prohibited". Stripe's own page puts them on neither list unless the product is unsafe or the claims are harmful1Stripe, Prohibited and restricted businesses, English version, read November 2, 2026.
Equipment: allowed, except for Afterpay
A store selling dumbbells, racks or treadmills has no Stripe line aimed at it1Stripe, Prohibited and restricted businesses, English version, read November 2, 2026. The friction comes from buy now, pay later.
Stripe's Afterpay/Clearpay terms say: "The following categories are restricted from using Afterpay/Clearpay and require you to comply with additional underwriting". The list includes "fitness and/or gym equipment", next to "pseudo medicals, pseudo pharmaceuticals and/or nutriceuticals"2Stripe, Afterpay Merchant Services Agreement (Afterpay / Clearpay Payment Terms), last updated July 15, 2026, Part 1.

Sports nutrition: judged on safety and claims
Protein powder and pre-workout are reviewed like any supplement. Two things decide it: what's in the tub, and what you say about it.
Ingredients. Some ingredients make the product illegal in the US, which puts it under the "not safe" line:
- DMAA: "DMAA-containing products marketed as dietary supplements are illegal and their marketing violates the law" (FDA, content current as of February 22, 2023)7FDA, DMAA in Products Marketed as Dietary Supplements, content current as of February 22, 2023
- SARMs: the FDA calls them "unapproved new drugs", and labels like "Research-grade compound" didn't change that in its December 12, 2025 warning letter8FDA, Warning letter to Titan SARMS LLC (719645), December 12, 2025

Transformation claims
Results more dramatic than users can generally expect are likely to be deceptive. "Results not typical" doesn't fix it.
Claims. Stripe's "outrageous claims" and "deceptive testimonials" lines meet the FTC's rule: "Testimonials that report results more dramatic than users can generally expect are likely to be deceptive", and "Results not typical" doesn't fix it9FTC, Health Products Compliance Guidance, December 2022.

Why accepted fitness brands still get closed
Being allowed means no review at sign-up. The review comes later, when something draws attention.
| What draws attention | Why it matters for fitness |
|---|---|
| A new store with large tickets | Big orders before any history look like risk |
| Disputes and fraud | Visa flags US merchants at 1.5% fraud plus disputes, with at least 1,500 cases a month, since April 1, 202610Visa, Acquirer Monitoring Program fact sheet, 2025 v2 |
| "Not received" and "not as described" disputes | Heavy equipment ships late or arrives damaged |
| Trial or auto-ship billing | Falls under the negative option line if pricing is unclear1Stripe, Prohibited and restricted businesses, English version, read November 2, 2026 |

Typical Stripe payout pause for unacceptable risk
Example
In November 2023, a Shopify merchant selling Pilates reformers wrote that Shopify Payments "flagged our business as high risk" and was "holding $28,000 for 120 days". Stripe "automatically blocked us as 'high-risk'", and the appeal "was declined just a few minutes after submitting it". The store had launched its range the month before11Shopify Community, "Shopify Payment / Stripe Suspension - High Value Items", posts of November 15 and 17, 2023.
Stripe can act on "unacceptable risk" and "typically" pauses payouts for 120 days from its first email4Stripe, Unacceptable Risk Policy, last updated July 29, 2026. A reserve can last "a predetermined period of time", and "in some rare cases, a reserve may be required indefinitely"5Stripe Support, Reserves: frequently asked questions, read October 26, 2026. Next steps after a closure: why Stripe closed your fitness brand account.

Set up before you need it
| Step | Why |
|---|---|
| A complete site before the first sale | Product pages, shipping times, return policy and contact details answer the reviewer's questions |
| Delivery proof with the full address | It's what defends a "not received" dispute: chargebacks for fitness brands |
| An underwritten account for nutrition or high tickets | A bank reviews you before you process: get approved |
| A second route for payments | A closure moves payments instead of stopping them: payment routing for fitness brands |
| Know where saved cards live | Stripe exports cards only to a PCI DSS Level 1 processor, and not subscriptions6Stripe Docs, Request a payment data export, read October 26, 2026 |
